Dolly Sods Wilderness, West Virginia
I traveled to Tucker County, West Virginia, to visit the Dolly Sods Wilderness, a scenic area within the Monongahela National Forest located on a high plateau on the Allegheny Front. The Sods is known for high mountain meadows and bogs, which are the result of extensive logging of the area in the past. Most of the trails in the area lie along old logging roads and narrow gauge rail beds that were used to extract timber and other natural resources. During World War II, the area was also used for artillery training. Signs posted at trailheads still warn hikers of the potential of unexploded ordinance in the area.
In this visit. I arrived Friday morning and began my hike at the Bear Rocks Trailhead, located along Forest Road 75. I hiked the Bear Rocks Trail, as well as portions of the Raven's Ridge Trail, the Rocky Ridge Trail, and portions of Blackburn Knob and Big Stonecoal Trails. This day of the trip was characterized by expansive views and tons interesting rock formations. My first night's camp was along Big Stonecoal Creek.
On Day 2, I continued the Big Stonecoal Trail, passing more meadows, spruce forests, and a stunning waterfall. I also climbed a sketchy path up Breathed Mountain to Lion's Head, a spectacular rock formation with a stunning view over the Red Creek Canyon and beyond. I ended the day with a fantastic campsite along Red Creek.
Day 3 began with moderate rain showers on the climb back up out of Red Creek area to Blackburn Knob, through more meadows and bogs before returning to the Bear Rocks Trailhead.
In total I hiked a little over 24 miles, including the loop hike, some off trail exploring, and explorations around camp each night. This was a truly epic adventure. The video will not do it justice. Thanks for watching!
