I was about 17 when I saw this film. Maybe it’s that age, or maybe this film carries something important inside, but 35 years later I’m reviewing it and experiencing the same feelings. Thank you !

What a beautiful melody…I vividly remember how impressed I was when I saw the movie back in 1980…. It stands the test of the time - still great today. Charming melody, beautiful harmonies, great arrangement…Thank you so much for publishing.

I loved the song, and loved the film. Somehow it always get missed out of lists of the best films ever made.

+Jeremy Benjamin Yeah, it was overlooked for some reason. There were two great films about Vietnam vets at this time, Stuntman and Cutter's Way, and strangely, they both got overlooked.

Best film ever. If you want to know how God treads each and every one of us, the relationship between ELI (Elijah) and “Lucky”. We ALL have to do the stunt and DIE to our fears in order to live again and be free to LOVE completely. Excellent film-making. God is directing your film. Have you done your stunt? Risked it ALL to find him? It is an ANTI-WAR film. You are “LUCKY” fighting for things you can never have. Pretending to be someone you’re not in a world of make-believe. But ELI must help you to realize that HE is in TOTAL control. Yes, you will tempt death. It is ALL in HIS HANDS for YOUR BENEFIT. Your reward? LIFE. Isn’t that enough? “I once had a virgin once. I had to go to Guatemala to get her. She had one-eye and a stuffed alligator that said, ‘welcome to Miami Beach” Hey, it’s an imperfect world, But it’s all we’ve got. Let’s quit fighting each other over make-believe borders for make-believe reasons. This movie is as close to perfection as it comes. Thank you, Peter O’Toole.

Eli Cross (PETER O TOOLE) : Oh Burt, stop this worrying. You must have heard surely of movie magic. You should be a stunt man, who is an actor, who is a character in a movie, who is an enemy soldier. Who'll look for you amongst all those? People like to believe in things, and policemen are just people. Or so I'm told. Frankly, our problem is so simple it's almost beneath us. Now listen to me: that door is the looking glass, and inside it is Wonderland. Have faith Alice! Close your eyes and enjoy

Out of nowhere into sight Out of darkness into light You come running pushing time Out of reason Out of rhyme Bits and pieces of your past Cling like shadows to your heels And your heart is learning fast How it feels With your secrets in your eyes And your feelings in disguise You come running in your fright Seeking shelter from the night And you search each passing face For a sign someone could care But they rush by in their race To nowhere And you watch and wonder where you belong And the crowd, it moves and takes you along And the colours splash and repaint your sky And reality is yours to deny And you look for someone your arms can hold Who will let you tell what begs to be told Then you ask yourself what good are your dreams? In a world where nothing is what it seems Bits and pieces of your past Chill your soul like winter rain But the time will come at last When a love will ease your pain If you let me I will try If you let me I'll be near If you let me when you cry I will hear Oh, oh and you watch and wonder where you belong And the crowd, it moves and takes you along And the colours splash and repaint your sky And reality is yours to deny And you look for someone your arms can hold Who will let you tell what begs to be told And you ask yourself what good are your dreams? In a world where nothing is what it seems And you watch and wonder where you belong And the crowd, it moves and takes you along And the colours splash and repaint your sky And reality is yours to deny And you look for someone that your arms can hold Who will let you ***** Lyrics by Norman Gimbel

After the great O'Toole passed away last December, I set about to relive my memory of him by screening his movies at my place. I finally got around to watching "The Stunt Man" (1980) today this Thursday, the twentieth of February, 2014. What an amazing movie! As for "Bits and Pieces" itself, what a beautiful voice Ms. Springfield had and what a great song this is! I am duly impressed. If only music was like this nowadays. Why must the good times depart us? Why must the great showmen and women of the past leave us? Are we doomed for mediocrity and perversion in the coming years? I can only wonder...

I think I first saw this a college class "philosophy in film". Maybe I had seen it on cable as a kid but never really thought about it. There's a Richard Rush short doc he made about it available that's fun to watch. Poor guy never really got his big shot as a major director after his first try Color of Night flopped. Maybe he worked as a script doctor.

One of the first true Independent Films films ever made n 1980. Columbia had the rights but did not produce it. We studied this film at Northwestern University in 1981. The last scene was shot several years after the original production wrapped according to our studies. I can't confirm this but I do recall it being a part of our studies. Only eight months a go I had a chance meeting with Capt. Eddie Ganter when I was looking at an apartment in Northern New Jersey. Ganter, a pilot, said he was Melvin Simon's pilot (executive producer) and he remembered the days of making this film. However there is no mention of this in Ganter's book. Great film!
