Tip from a Dominican: if you wanna see the real country, rent a car and go to the south (it’s not as touristy, so you will likely won’t find a lot of people speaking English and you’ll need to carry more cash on you). It’s beautiful, lots of virgin beaches, it’s safer, people are really nice and warm. Also, besides Punta Cana, Las Terrenas is gorgeouuuuus and very underrated.

When it comes to Spanish, I actually intentionally travel to places that speak the language I'm learning and want to improve. Since I've been learning English, German, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese (my mother tongue is Czech), I almost never travel to countries that don't have at least one of these four languages as their official language. Especially Latin America is my absolute favourite. I'm gonna be spending a month in Dominican Republic and a month in Panama this year. It's simply awsome to be able to travel and work on my Spanish all at once.

I had family living in the DR in the 80s so we'd visit often and one thing I remember about driving in the DR was the copious usage of horns. Not so much turn signals, but horns everywhere. I have a question sir. An American friend of mine was in DR two years ago, got CVD 19 and couldn't leave his hotel room . We were not allowed to go get him. He ultimately died. It was heartbreaking. My question is, do you think he would have been neglected by staff or locals being as sick as he was? My fear is that he just died of dehydration or something. Do you think the staff would have checked on him to give him water. Such a horrible thing that happened we are so greif stricken. The only positive thing about this story is that he absolutely loved DR. And as soon as the travel ban lifted he went back to visit his beloved DR.

You can work out a deal with the driver and you can have him for the whole day. ( but when using a Moto concho ask the front desk who to call so you will get a fare price)Beware of street food. Take meds for the water if out side the resorts. It’s safe but you common sense if you don’t feel right about a situation don’t do it. I visit there many times and stayed their long term.

I've gone there 3 times, and had a good time, only once. And I thought I would never go back, but feel more optimistic, after watching this video. The first time, I went to Punta Cana, and stayed in a great, all inclusive. Two years later, I stayed in an all inclusive, not so nice. I got a common virus, and sick to my stomach, the last week I was there. A Dominican man, I was friends with back home, and was in the travel business himself, told me I got it from eating coconut. And I was drinking a coconut smoothy, several times. This made me wait, over 10 years, before I decided to go there once again. I decided to save money, because the all inclusive places, became much more expensive. I stayed at a nice looking place, however, it didn't have room safes, which ai knew were important. My first night there, ai went out for dinner. The next day, my credit card wasn't working. I called the bank, and they told me they put a stop on it, from fraudulent activity. Someone came in my room when I was out. They used my card, then put it back. I found out, the bank could only send a replacement, to the capitol, on the other side of the island. I saved enough money to pay the fee at the airport, but had to come home early. Then at the airport, I found out, they don't take cash, only credit cards. I paid another man, and he used his card, even tho I didn't know him.

Great video! I know you mentioned the tipping and to have cash on you…but I just want to reiterate that both times we went to the DR with family that were not use to always tipping or negotiating prices that it can get overwhelming. Be prepared for locals to look at you as an ATM machine and outside the resort (sometimes inside) can be frustrating when you just want to go on a site seeing tour and everyone hounds you to buy something or offers to help with every little thing then asks for money. Some people that go end up actually enjoy getting back home where they dont have to worry about who they will need to give money too or try to walk away from. And then I get the BAD Attitude from Dominicans females Working at the Airport in Santo Domingo because I am a Dominican with an AMERICAN passport; and there is Nothing that they HATE MORE than Another Dominican with An American Passport!! Speaking about baseball; we’ve been there numerous times Throughout the rest of the year I go to garage sales etc. and pick up balls, bats and gloves. Instead of tipping with money; I hand out that stuff and just go ga ga over it. Lady type stuff, like pantyhose, etc.; like anything else has to be imported and is very expensive for them.

Thanks for mentioning the NOISE; they don't Let You SLEEP; I stayed at an Airbnb and the Host was the One throwing LOUD parties ALL NIGHT until 6 in the morning. And then the Old Man Gets UPSET because I reported him to Airbnb. Go figure!!!

Hey dude, great video, I have been to the DR 10 times and I learn more and more each time. Your info is super accurate. I try to leave my USA "tude" IN the USA, cause these folks making being late a regular thing and they are ok with it. I am also now, took some time for me. Also I would say , many places I went in Santo Domingo DO NOT take US dollars, I exchange money after I arrive and I always get a great rate of exchange. and I no longer OVERTIP! They are happy you tip at all, 100 -200 pesos is enough to give for everything you need to tip for. For eveyday activies, dress down, no jewlery AT ALL EVER. just try to blend works for me. The BEST thing about the DR is the people, warm , friendly and honest ( not talking about the hustlers, say NO as many times as needed before they give up ). I also rent a car, I am from Los Angeles and I am a road warrior. I can hang right with them.

DON'T exchange at the airport booths!! The rate is atrocious - up to 20% off. Any commercial bank will do. Check google for current rate.
