Whitewall slicks and all. What memories. I used to go to Carlsbad Raceway here in Carlsbad, CA (San Diego County). It was an NHRA sanctioned track back in the 60s - 70s. They had the likes of Big Daddy Don Garlits, Tom The Mongoose McEwen, Big John Mazmanian, TV Tommy Ivo, Dragmaster (from Carlsbad), Don The Snake Prudhomme, Dandy Dick Landy, etc.. It was a great time to be a fan, watching the AA/F dragsters smoke the tires the full quarter mile, or so it seemed. The other interest was the new A/FX cars. The track became an international motocross track, later in life. It's now a business and industrial park. I believe the main road through the park is on the same easement as the old drag strip.

I got to go there back in the 80's for a nostalgia race, got to see Stone Woods & Cook Willys... that was sweet, pulled a big wheel stand, set it down and still ran a 10 second quarter.

Can you seriously imagine driving that: full noise? Nothing around you and no straps on the grenade. Unbelievable, really. But those old boys did it. 😎 🤙🏻

I never saw or heard this Swamp Rat run. My memories are of his later rear engine cars which he went to after a horrendous fire. He’s a character.

@@gordonsaye9183 Don was going to quit racing if he had to keep running the slingshot so while in the hospital he drew up some plans of a rear engine dragster and as soon as he got out of the Hospital still in a wheelchair he started building a rear engine dragster and once done went out to test it the car would not go straight it would go left or right they were using the same parts off the slingshots and found out the steering on the slingshot was too much he turned down the steering ratio and the car went straight and broke the track record the same pass and the rear engine dragster was the new thing and the slingshots were history anyway he talks about in in the video Don Garlits Close Calls here is the link to it kzitem.info/news/bejne/pKSOk4yNhGh8ZHo

Isn't this a modern Hemi? Is Big the only person to run one on nitro? I wonder who made the blower manifold?

Putting on your muffs AFTER the car has started, you're too late pops, damage is being done. And you guys really need plugs and muffs at this level. Take care of yourselves!

No worries. Very short term exposure like that would not cause permanent damage to the ears. But prolonged exposure certainly will.

@@richardfay8830 It's not considered "short term" if you do it repeatedly and for years. This is most likely a chronic situation.
