None of his first 4 albums are stand out records, but the compilation be put out in 2009 is a great record - just song after song of great tracks and great memories, all kicked off by Dirty Laundry, which may be his best single. Don's solo work puts him in the category of "Good "Greatest Hits" Artist" more so than an album artist.

building the perfect beast has a special place in my heart it was one of the first cassettes I owned as a kid and love side 2 of that album but the end of the innocence is my personal favorite album of Don's just a brilliant commentary on the excesses of the 80s

I think it’s hard to overstate how huge Don Henley was in the Eighties, particularly the early 80’s. His hits were all over, and the first three albums were everywhere. I had and frankly enjoyed them all, especially “Building” and “Innocence”. Great voice, so many cool contributors (especially Mike Campbell, Tom Petty’s secret weapon), and radio-friendly songs. It was like a respite from The Smiths and Talking Heads or Elvis Costello, something your mom and preppy girls would like. Which has a place. But I never followed him after the Eighties, after the Greatest Hits album. He came off as a miserable, angry, negative personality, and who needs that? Like U2, he had baggage for a backstory, and got in his own way. Good for a time and place, but soon came to define middle of the road, Perry Como-like. Thx, JPE

Henley is one of my favorite male vocalists. I have all his albums. I've seen him live 3 times: 1990. 2003 (with Eagles), and 2016. As good as he sounds on record, he sounds even better live. Here's my ranking: (it's almost reverse chronological order) 5- Building the Perfect Beast- has some great songs but suffers from overly mid 80's production and muddy sound. Sunset grill is the best hit. Boys and All she wants are overplayed. (2.75 stars) 4- I can't stand Still- I always rank this one lower in my head til I listen to it and remember all the songs I like that I forgot. It's a little unfocused but again has some gems and much better, lighter handed production than its successor. (3 stars) 3- End of the Innocence- Got this when it came out as one of the first LP's when I got into music in high school so it is lifted by sentimentality BUT, more consistent than either of it predecessors, plus better production than Beast. 6 or 7 of the tracks were getting radio play back when it came out, this album was huge. (3.5 stars) 2- Inside Job- You guys missed the boat on this one. 1 star?? Come on! Maybe I'm a sap but more songs on this one resonate with me than any prior album. Some of the production choices aren't prime, I'll give you that, but there is some great stuff on here. The ballads and slower tracks are prime Henley IMO. I think he is performing with more emotion and maturity than he had at any time before. (3.75 stars) 1- Cass County- You got this one right. Best Henley album by a *country* mile! Just about perfect in every way and I agree with everything you both said about it. Prime Henley in his element. The only solo album that meets and in some cases betters his Eagles work. (4.5 stars) Wish Joe had been on this one would have liked to get his take.

05) Building the Perfect Beast (3 stars) 04) Inside Job (3.25 stars) 03) I Can't Stand Still (3.25 stars) 02) The End of Innocence (3.25 stars) 01) Cass County (4 stars) 0 stars - irredeemably terrible/insultingly bad/the worst .5 stars - terrible 1 star - bad 1.5 stars - pretty bad 2 stars - fair 2.5 stars - meh 2.75 stars - "It's OK, but quit playing it." 3 stars - OK/decent 3.25 stars - pretty good 3.5 stars - good 4 stars - very good 4.5 stars - excellent 5 stars - the bubble-headed bleach-blonde notes - * I was quite familiar with Don's 80's hits but that's it. * The clear standout on the debut is "Dirty Laundry" and nothing else comes close to being that good. But the title track has a wild keyboard solo and there's some thoughtful lyrics. Too many ballads for my liking though (rock ballads are not my thing) and the worst song, "Johnny Can't Read," never should have been a single - it's super cheesy. "The Unclouded Day" has a melody I've heard before and it drives me nuts trying to identify it. * Building the Perfect Beast is probably a lot of people's top album but it's at my bottom because of too many weak songs, especially the abysmal, 1-star title track. It's a shame because four of these songs are 5-star hits. * The End of Innocence doesn't have anything on that level but it's a more consistent album with no outright duds so it ranks higher. The title track is essentially a Bruce Hornsby song - not my favorite artist. * Inside Job has a pretty strong first half but gets pretty so-so on the second, thus the low ranking. * Cass County to my ears is a very good country album. I wasn't sure how to approach it because it seems to only be available in a "deluxe" edition with either 4 or 6 extra songs which are not tacked on at the end but rather mixed in with the running order. In the end, I just considered the 12 songs that were not labelled "bonus tracks" by Wikipedia. Anyway you slice it though, it's a very good 4 star album in my book. Lots of big name guest stars. * Henley is a very good lyricist if not terribly poetic or colorful. He uses standard motifs like angels and devils. But he uses proper rhymes and rhyme schemes, and his voice is great. He's made a ton of "relationship gone bad songs" and he's undeniably good at it. But many of his lyrics have a social conscience as well. * Cheers mates!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not an Eagles fan but, I like Don Henley. I own two of his albums, Building the Perfect Beast and The End of the Innocence, and I heard most of Cass County. It's true that Don Henley sounds good singing country. He's a Texan after all so, he should. I'm not a big fan of country music but, if I were, I'd rather listen to Robert Plant singing it than Mick Jagger or Don Henley. Don Henley however sounds ten times better than Mick Jagger. Who doesn't? Don't get me wrong, I love Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones but let's be honest. He's not the best singer when it comes to rock, country or anything else. KZitem was being jerky about letting me listen to Inside Job and I Can't Stand Still. I will however give my snapshot impression based on the few songs I was able to hear. I'll rank the three albums I've heard and make brief comments about the other two. 1. The End of the Innocence: Don Henley's best album by far. It has some of his best songs and I listen to it start to finish w/out skipping a song. 2. Cass County: As I said, I'm not a country music fan. But I'll give credit where credit is due. He sounds good, the album is well put together and didn't make me gag while I was listening to it. 3. Building the Perfect Beast: I love Don Henley but this album sucks! The only good tunes are All She Wants to Do Is Dance, The Boys of Summer and Sunset Grill. Whoever ranked this as his second-best album over The End of the Innocence must be kidding. The other songs, in my opinion go from bad to worse! Sidenotes: a. I Can't Stand Still: I like what I heard of it. If I got the chance to hear all of it, I would've maybe put it above Building the Perfect Beast. b. Inside Job: The song, The Genie, is goofy. Taking You Home was good and, Wedding Day was okay. Maybe if I heard it all, I might have the same rotten of opinion of it as Kram and Jason.

Interesting stuff. Kram liking a country record! I like country more than Kram, but I also don't love country and I'd probably like more if it was as good as "Cass County". I think Jason is a bit too harsh on "Building the Perfect Beast". I loved that album when it first came out, but must admit it does sound dated today and I now think its got a few standout songs and lots of mediocre songs. So, I'm back to his first solo album as my favorite. The songs overall are just plain better. Here's my list: 1. I Can't Stand Still (easily 7 or 8 excellent songs. Great variety of song styles all within Don's wheelhouse) 2. End of the Innocence (probably a tie between this and Cass County. The good songs are really good) 3. Cass County (It is a stunner. Nice that Kram is objective enough to appreciate country done this well) 4. Building the Perfect Beast (I surprised myself on how low this sunk. Maybe Jason is right?) 5. A little over a week ago in Hollywood Florida, I saw The Who and a couple days later van Morrison. I remember thinking Pete and Roger are class acts -- Van sounded amazing but I felt hated by him. His set was 1 hr shorter and the only engagement with the audience was one faint “thank you.” He took off in the middle of a 10 minute version of Gloria, his final song, and we were all line “oh he’s not coming back?” He wanted to sneak off without dealing with annoying fan stuff. However, Van I think is actually a class act compared to Henley who will get pissed off at people for wanting pictures or videos of the concerts, loves lawsuits, really cracks down on KZitemrs who violate copyright, and of course shits on former eagles. I love his voice but he just might be the biggest jerk in popular music

Was quite surprised that you both gave rather mediocre ratings to "Building the Perfect Beast". I've always really loved the way the diverse pastiche of memorable tunes unfolds from start to finish. I did buy it shortly after it was released back in 1984, and played it often over the remainder of the 80s, so perhaps there is a bit of nostalgia coming from my perspective. I did like the details of Kram's review of the individual tracks, though, even if his overall rating of the album was disappointing low. I felt he did a good job of capturing how I felt as well about the stronger tracks on the album at least. In hindsight, I'd give the album a rating of somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars.

I don't think Inside Job is nearly as bad as the guys (and apparently most people) say it is. This is just another reason I like TLM channel. Because I saw 'Don Henley', and I was going to take a pass; but then.... And I;m glad you guys basically slaughtered him. Because he needs to be. The word "Adult" is the one word I totally associate with him. Everything is so freakin adult, and mature, and level headed; yet a bit tortured; just the correct amount. Is there possibly a lamer track than "Wedding Song"? I think Myargonauts Jason put it best in his comment. Big Hits are all pretty tolerable. I love "Boys of Summer"' and like Kram says, I do like Don's voice. Hate almost every lyric he ever wrote though Ha! If you guys do a Best Song clip, he might come out a bit more ahead. Summary. A few outstanding tracks amid a lot of floundering. Too much dated material that does not hold up. Far too many players that are underwhelming in their delivery so it becomes Don Henley and the Heartbreakers with special guests Toto and The Wrecking Crew.

"Cass County" over "Building The Perfect Beast". Yeah, no. Have to disagree on this one, guys. BTPB is his best record. Not a big "Eagles" fan anyway. Country rock isn't my thing.

Note, since Cass County gets so much recognition here: Check out Willie Nelson's new release A Beautiful Time (his 437th studio album?), it has a similar concept but is far better. Avoid the Cohen and the Beatles covers, which somehow are unnecessary oddities, the rest is a good Willie Nelson album.

Pretty sure the hate for Don Henley as a person, which I share by the way, prejudiced their views on his music. These guys give Black Sabbath albums five stars FFS, which is ridiculous.

Singles artist. His albums all suck though.he has a pretty decent greatest hits album. But you don’t have to go beyond the hits album. A lot of artists from the 70s who were really successful put out a string of albums in the80s where they lost the plot. Don Henley is a perfect example of this. Then again, Henley was in a band with multiple songwriters. Maybe we didn’t hear the weaker stuff thst we’d hear on Henley solo albums because the other songwriters contributed their songs. Henley left to his own devices puts out some good singles but can’t do deep cuts.

Why would you review Don Henley when you haven't done Van Morrison ? If Don tried really hard he just might get a gig as one of Van's backing singers.

I love Van Morrison (probably my second favourite artist of all time), and I'd love to see a ranking of his albums some time. There are so many great albums in his discography beside the obvious ones. But like Neil Young and Bob Dylan, he has a really large discography. I think he has at least one good song or so on every album, but listening through all of his albums in one week isn't something I do on a regular basis, so to speak. With that said, I think Tastes Like Music do a great job in their selection of artists. They have done some artists I either strongly dislike or just have no interest in, but even those videos are interesting to watch. Sometimes I've found new favourites, and sometimes I've discovered good songs or albums by artists I didn't like that much. And I think it's really fun that they combine obvious ones like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and David Bowie with more surprising ones like Don Henley, Whitney Houston or Gene Clark. And those artists might have a super fan or two that loved those videos, you know.

I don't like the Eagles. Don surprised me with a few good singles on his solo records but if I ever was forced to listened to his albums I doubt I would like other songs. 1 The Boys of Summer - great. I think Mike Campbell wrote the song and played guitar on the record. 2 The End of the Innocence 3 The Last Worthless Evening Hardly like: All She wants to do is Dance Not enough Love in this World. I couldn't even give hear Henley on Ytube as all they have is artists "in the style of Don Henley" Not going to listen to again: Sunset Strip Dirty Laundry is cringeworthy. Kick 'em when they're up kick 'em when they're down
