I met Don Rickles a few years ago at the old Riviera in Las Vegas. I extended my hand, and said, "Mr. Rickles, it's an honor to meet you, Sir. I grew up enjoying your work." He shook my hand, looked me straight in the eye, and said: "Kid (mind you, I was in my 30s at this point), you're too darn young to know who I am! Who put you up to this? Your grandmother?" He grinned and I laughed hard.

As I was growing up, in the 50s, ALL of the greatest comics were Jewish. We lived in Brooklyn and had live "Your Shows of Shows" on our TV in 1950. Then, my parents told me about the Catskills' resorts. There were so many great Jewish comics who "cut their teeth" in the Catskills I cannot name them all. BUT, to me personally, the finest of all of them wasn't necessarily just a "stand-up" comic, but more of a writer. This guy could also act, too. If I ever saw his name in a Cast listing, I knew the movie would be good. That man is Carl Reiner! My wife and I watch my favorite comic movie, The Russians are Coming, the Russians are Coming, several times a year. And, I don't think he wrote any of it. He just played Whitaker Walt perfectly. The art of Don Rickles was that he was not a mean spirited person in real life at all. Just the opposite. And this characteristic actually was evident to his "targets" even when he delivered his "insults." As Rickles himself acknowledged, if he really felt hostility, it wouldn't be funny. Unfortunately, today's "hate school" of so-called "comics" completely miss this point, which is why they will never be as funny as Don Rickles was.

So this guy walks into a bar in Argentina. He's there on business, works for a travel agency. He sidles up on a stool and orders a rum & coke. As he's waiting on his drink, he glances to his right and sees this old man who looks strikingly like Adolf Hitler, the German fürher of yesteryear. Led the NSDAP government, got in trouble with the international banking network and whatnot. There was a war about it at one time. So he sees this guy and as he's handed his drink, he thanks the bartender and thinks to himself this guy looks about the age Hitler might be if he were alive to this day. He remembers hearing some theories about the man escaping death and fleeing to South America, he always thought it was ludicrous, but his curiosity is piqued as he's faced with this old man who resembles the fella so much. Lots of wrinkles, no moustache, but he could've been old Adolf's twin. So the guy sips his cokey morgan and musters up the will to start a conversation. He looks at the geezer and he says "Hey man do you speak English?" The man looks at him and nods. "Ja. I speak English, how are you?" "I'm doing well," he says "Hey I don't mean to be insulting, but has anyone ever told you you look a lot like Adolf Hitler?" The old man smiled and looked unfazed "Oh ja, I have been tolt zis." The travel agent thinks to himself what a coincidence it is that this old man seemed to have an authentic German accent. He says "No offense. You German?" The old man nods again. "Ja." The agent asks his name. To his shock the old man replies "Mein name ist Adolf." The bartender glances over inconspicuously as he wipes down the bar a few feet away. The travel agent feels a strange new feeling in the pit of his stomach. A mixture of disbelief, anxiety and fascination. He tries not to let it show as he says "You must be pulling my leg." The elderly man says "No, I am Adolf Hitler. I can tell you because nobody believes me." The agent doesn't know what to say. Here's this guy who could very well be the monster he's heard about all his life. This frail, unassuming senior with the German accent is telling him he's Adolf Hitler. He's just drinking beer in a dim everyday bar at the bottom of the map. The agent asks the old man "How can you tell me so casually that you're Adolf Hitler? The nazi leader? The man who led a charge to take over the world in world war two?" The elderly Hitler says "Please, mein memory ist not what it used to be. I vas ze leader of Chermany and I did have to go to war." The agent feels sick as he asks the most pressing question on his mind- "...How can you live with yourself after murdering 6 million innocent people for nothing?" The former fürher looked again unfazed "What are you speaking of? Zat must be someone else!" The agent couldn't believe it. He looked around just to see if he were the only one hearing this. He looked back to the old man who looked positively innocent in light of the situation. He persisted "You mean to tell me that you don't remember systematically killing SIX MILLION people? You just forgot?" A sad, distant look came into the elderly Hitler's face. "...I can't imagine doing zis horrible thing...even vith all ze power... It can not be..." He was silent for seconds that seemed like eternity. The agent was incredulous "As the leader of the Nazis you ordered the murder of 6 million Jews! It's what you are known for the world round and why you must have come down here to hide from!" A spark of familiarity was seen in the elderly Hitler's eyes. "Jews?" He lifted his mug with a shrug "Yeah, sounds like something I would do."

This roast puts RR just two degrees of separation from a load of gangsters. You know, it was his changing of the tax code, and not 'Star Wars' which did in the Soviet system. All those Russian oligarchs needed access to western markets and a place to re-establish their power-base as they stole the assets of their own nation in their sham change-over to a democratic political system. Changing the tax code allowed them to create massive fortunes in a very short time in the US without facing the safe-guards established by Roosevelt to counter another capitalist crisis the likes of which plunged us into over a decade of economic depression. The Soviet oligarchs needed to hide the money out of country so no foreign service could launch a counter-coup exposing the theft and showing where domestic rivals might expose and retrieve the assets. You should read, Dossier: The Secret History of Armand Hammer. The Soviets used Armand Hammer to smuggle funds out of Soviet Russia and into the west to fund covert operations. Armand Hammer met with high level mafia criminals engaged in bootlegging and helped them create laundering schemes to purchase legitimate entities. The Soviets had the goal of setting up a commercial contract for ammonium nitrate to bring their agricultural industry into the twentieth century--hoping to defeat the west by boosting their populations, through sheer strength of numbers. Armand Hammer was even known to have met with Meyer Lansky in Cuba. Meyer was the defacto head of the mafia while Lucky Luciano was in exile... because Meyer had organized a scheme whereby the various bosses could clean their dirty money through the purchase of legitimate businesses from a slush fund established in a Swiss bank account. The Italians wouldn't take orders from a Jew, unless that Jew was showing them how to make a fortune in legitimate dollars. When JFK was assassinated, MI6 had a book published under a phony name, which detailed a study they had compiled which came to the conclusion that the assassination could've been funded by a coalition of fifty investors. Further, Birobidzahn was an early Bolshevik experiment with a Jewish state. Jewish gangsters were given the incentive of working toward the establishment of a Jewish state. Something Andrei Gromyko takes no small credit for. As the Soviet ambassador to the UN, in recognizing the fledgling state, even as it was stealing the homes of Palestinians to accomplish this. But this roast is funny.

@@MikeAnn193 Difference. Rickles jokes are out of fun and love. Today's jokes on the president are mean spirited... and quite frankly not funny. The actual funny jokes about the President are from conservative.
@MikeAnn193

@@jonlanier_ I agree that many jokes about Trump are not out of "fun and love," and yes of course you're right that being "insulted" by Don Rickles is quite different from being insulted by people who hate and/or disrespect the target of their jabs. That said, Ronald Reagan (and nearly every other president I've known about) handled _mean-spirited_ jokes with grace and maturity. It was just a part of the job. Trump is too thin-skinned to let such things roll off his back, as he _visibly demonstrated,_ for perhaps the first (but hardly last) time when Obama roasted him at a White House Correspondents dinner some years ago. _Trump could barely even smile._ Obama was not being mean spirited, unless you call every one of those dinners mean spirited. Aside from that I have not an ounce of sympathy for the Insulter in Chief! _Not a day goes by_ when Trump isn't making up a name for someone he dislikes, as a sixth grader would do, blanket attacking and besmirching tens of thousands of honest journalists, or belittling some American business. His obsession with tweeting insults to celebrities, and his WORSHIP ME rallies, would be *despicable wastes of time* even if they _weren't_ indicative of a narcissistic personality disorder and severe emotional immaturity. Trump is far from the first president to be targeted by comedians and average citizens with sincere hatred masquerading as humor! Every president in my sixty years has received this treatment. I cannot think of a single one, Republican or Democrat, who reacted in such a consistently childish manner. What they mostly did -- IGNORE the insults, at least publicly -- is not only outside of Trump's capability, it's beyond his conception! Every insult must be countered, even if it does NOTHING to serve American's! It's all about him. I'll agree with you on one _more_ thing: the jokes are rarely funny. I usually have a blank stare when I hear them, enviously or angrily wondering how the audience thinks his near-CONSTANT dishonesty, ineptitude, ignorance and mental illness could possibly be a laughing matter. The jokes may not be funny and they may be mean-spirited in many cases, but it's a way for people to blow off the steam of frustration and disgust which his behavior elicits. If he can't take it, he could perhaps stop dishing it out! But he can't do that, either.

The issue with that joke today is that it's a marriage joke. Those jokes are very uncommon now adays, and saying a marriage joke about another mans (albeit fictional) wife is a joke I haven't heard in a very long time. The fact that Dean Martin chose it to be about Eva Braun is genius and fits perfectly into todays comedy.
