You're right. I think the fact that he wasn't completely cemented in as a demi-god of comedy yet had something to do with it. He still was sometimes nervous when "roasting" certain celebrities and politicians, etc.. It appears to be more nervous laughter than anything else but you are correct, he laughs more during this gig than any other in memory. He will never be replaced.

Also although Rickles insulted audience members of various ethnicities he never used an ethnic slur. He'd say "The black guy" (Never the N word) or "the Polish guy" (Never Polack). And at the end of his nightclub act he'd always explain that his act was all in fun not meant to offendanyone with an apology to anyone in audience who may have been offended. ☺

I've been on a Don Rickles binge on KZitem since seeing a clip on Facebook. So far I greatly admire his comedic talent and then at the end, just say the most heartwarming speeches to a person. So much love and kindness in his words. RIL sir!

1:28 I've seen many hours of Don Rickles clips over the years, this is the first time I recall seeing him fall out of character and laugh during his 'presentation' , too funny. Rickles was a one in a million.

Don ad libbed his act. He had some stock gags ready for all occasions, but his mind was so quick, he could pounce like a rattler. His ability to work off the cuff was extraordinary and hilarious.

Great gags on Carson and the mayor- "Last time he went for his wallet a picture of Chester Morris moved!" and "Isn't this great?, your up at 12 O'clock interviewing Huntz Hall!" and "You never knew a big star to wear a clip on bowtie" and "It's good to see you guys, that's Kay Kaiser's old band, they past away in back!"...LOL!! Most people under 50 or 60 wouldn't get those lines, you missed out..great barbs, top drawer Rickles. Robert at 68.

And now Mr. Rickles has been joined by his good friend, Regis Philbin. All these great entertainers were unique, irreplaceable class acts. One can only imagine that Heaven is a lot funnier with all these greats together again. We’ll never see a generation like them ever again. Thank you for years of memorable entertainment. The humor and the Roasts are all classics not but I can't watch them anymore because it hurts too much. They were all part of my childhood and though it would honor their memory to enjoy them it just reminds me of how many great talents we lost and that my parents are gone now too. My parents and i always watched Rickles on the Carson show and in a few movies and we loved these Roasts dearly. I hope that Rickles is having a huge huge party and Roast up there reunited with all his friends and like minded late comics: He's with Johnny Carson and Phyllis Diller and Joan Rivers, Shecky Green, Rodney Dangerfield, Marty Allen, Buddy Hackett, Sinatra, Martin, Davis Jr. all gone now :( Mannnnn, do I feel old.

There was a time that Johnny and Ed had divorced their first wives, and Don had not yet married his wife Barbara. The three of them supposedly painted the town red, once The Tonight Show was taped. I heard Don say to Johnny several times Johnny helped him break into television. Of course, that was usually followed by a wisecracking that had Johnny laughing.

Loved the Huntz Hall reference. Met him in 1966 one morning at the coffee shop of the Fontanebleu Hotel. He looked hung over but graciously accommodated a young kid’s autograph request ( written on a paper place mat from the “chez bon bon” room).
