Thanks for telling your story, I also read all the comments, just to let you know that I really enjoy your channel, I'm a long time subscriber going back 4-5 years. I'm a retired auto body tech and body shop manager, people have a curiosity about how wrecked cars are repaired, a body shop is a very dangerous place, mostly because of frame pulling clamps and chains possibly coming off the car and flying in the air , possibly hitting someone, cars that I repaired maybe 15 years ago that are damaged bad enough to require a hard frame or body pull are totaled out due to the expense and very high salvage value they bring at auction. The insurance companies want to settle all insurance claims as cheap as they can . People think body men walk around with a endless supply of Bondo and all we do is smear Bondo on the car and wa la the car is repaired, Not even close too being true . Enjoying every minute of my retirement life with my lovely wife, and family, friends. Body man Bob from Northern Virginia retired living large in Alabama. Yup. Customers have to be able to trust the shop they are taking their vehicle to. As a former tech years ago, I've seen crap (as I know many of us car guys have) happen with customer vehicles that stuck with me over the years. I made it a point to have friends or acquaintances in the automotive field, especially now that i no longer have personal access to a lift. I do everything on my truck on the ground (floor jack and stands) myself and enjoy it, but if i had to trust a dealer / shop for some reason, I would (with respect) have a chat with the tech prior to any work, get a good read of the tech and the shop and take it from there. Oh and I totally agree with you on the stand alone inspection being a bad idea.

Thanks Rick. I grew up in the 50s - 60s and worked for my dad in his auto repair shop...so I do know a lot about what it takes to repair a vehicle. I selected a local mechanic to do my work. I gave the dealerships a chance but they both failed my expectations. I liked what you said about doing inspection along with oil changes. That's what I would expect. I told both of my kids to never, not ever take your vehicles to a Quick Change oil shop because of that very thing. I appreciate the skills that a good mechanic has. I should say technician because they have to know so much about the electrical aspects of these new vehicles and without the expensive tools needed to diagnose a problem, I am not able to do it. My guy and his dad run an independent shop and they are both very good. The younger guy is excellent at electrical diags and his dad is more old school mechanic and knows what he's doing. They do allow me to come into the shop and converse with them but I won't interrupt them if they are working on something. These guys are so busy that it takes weeks sometimes to get an appointment. If the job is going to take a lot of time, I drop the vehicle off the night before. What an asset to have people who you can trust to work on your vehicles, and not up sell or do unnecessary work. This is what every person who drives a vehicle should pursue. Only use the dealerships as needed for warranty work.

There’s another side to this; so many dealerships & shop are corrupt, customers have very little trust that their vehicle will be repaired correctly or vandalized. Example; GM dealer doing a transmission fluid & filter change, watching caught them trying to install a cheap Car Quest filter & gasket not AC Delco. Had no clue about cleaning the magnet in the pan. Service writers don’t always communicate all the details to the technician. Don’t blame customers being vigilant about being thorough with their car.

Rich i’d love your input how you would handle this situation if it happened in your shop. We run a very nice reputable shop in a very nice area of town. Yesterday we had a first time customer (not a soccer mom type person) accuse us of stealing 50 bucks out of their center console. Mind you the tech they’re accusing has worked with us for years and is a stand up guy. I was up front with the service advisor trying to reason with the guy for quite a minute and he just wasn’t having it, eventually the service advisor had had enough and told the guy if you feel we did you wrong then you go ahead and call the police but it’s time for you to leave. So the guy goes out front and about 10 minutes later a police car pulls up and he literally leaves the lot as the police car is pulling in. To me it seems like he got cold feet when he saw the cop pulling up and maybe realized he didn’t wanna file a false police report

When he picked up the vibe that your shop was "your way or no way" when you described services - he should have just moved on.

Now the flip side is, I could never use your shop. Unless I have video or personal proof as to what is done or not done to my vehicle there is no way I'm trusting anyone. This idea that you get to totally control my $20K asset is ridiculous, who knows what you (actual tech working) might do. Wife has the Mercedes, and the Mercedes dealer here (Phoenix) will give you limited access to the shop if you have proper PPE - so don't tell me it can't be done. Flip side is you could charge extra to totally video (from fixed cameras) what happens and put people at ease. In these days you simply cannot put blind trust in anyone - there's got to be transparency/checks-and-balances.
