@vibovitold

@@bbolen3524that was exactly my case. i had been a brown belt for like 6 years... such a longtime mostly due to changing clubs, as i'd moved around for a while - to another city, then to another country etc. so i was kind of a "guest star" everywhere, with noone to promote me to black, because i'm seen as a visitor at every school. which i didn't mind at all, i was a pretty decent brown belt, at least a couple of years in, but to me a black belt is like a stamp of excellence. and i'm nowhere near excellence, my game has gaps, i feel like i mostly rely on a bag of old tricks, etc. being a brown belt is more comfortable, if you get tapped out by a lower belt it's like "shit happens", as you're technically not there yet, but for a black belt it feels embarassing. i think that's because of the black belt stereotype. i know that everyone says "it's only the beginning of the journey", yadda yadda, but we still tend to think about it as a "finished product". so brown belt sends a message "watch me, i'm still improving", while wearing a black belt feels like saying "i'm the boss", and when that's what you feel, there's a lot of pressure on you.

I’m disabled and wheelchair bound and from the UK, and I was really really sick as a kid… And a family friend once insisted that had a fundraiser for me and my family to go to Disneyland in Florida that next year! And we did in the end, and we had it at her sisters pub about 25 minutes from my house roughly? And that pub where we had our fundraiser happened to be right next to a Karate Dojo that was owned and ran by my auntie’s friend from years ago (we had no idea leading up to it). And I started going to “lessons” there about 3 weeks before the fundraiser, and I went to one, maybe two lessons there before we had the fundraiser… Then on the morning of the fundraiser, about an hour or so before it was set to begin. The instructor Tony asked me to come to his class that morning, which I later found out was a belt ceremony… And multiple people were given their next belts, whilst I just sat at the back of the class, clueless as to why he asked me to go there..? But then right at the end of class after all the other belts had been handed out, he invited me up to the front of class, with my little 3 week old white belt around my waist, and he proceeded to remove it, and then place a black belt around my waist, which I STILL have now almost 20 years later probably… And when I was at college a few years ago, when I was around 17/18, I had somebody at the college who helped me get from point A to point B with my wheelchair… And who was that person? My old Karate instructor Tony😅😅 For around 3 days……… Until my old PA that I had the year prior was walking in front of us and she overheard me and Tony talking about the fundraiser that was put on for me all those years ago… And she snitched on us to her boss, and had him removed as my PA, because for some absolutely ridiculous reason I couldn’t have a PA who I knew outside of school, even though 1. I hadn’t seen him once since I was around 4 or 5 years old at the fundraiser the day I got my black belt from him… So it’s not even like I knew him or saw him outside of school at all? And 2. Id feel a hell of a lot more comfortable having somebody I knew/Tony taking me from point A to point B at college, rather than somebody I’d just met a few weeks prior taking me there… It’s never made sense to me has that rule at all, it’s stupid… But yeah, I have him on Facebook now and he is STILL instructing despite being in his late 70’s now, which is so crazy to me if I’m honest😂😂😂😂 He’s an absolutely incredible man though, and he’ll always be my favourite PA and my favourite instructor/coach no matter anyone says, and no matter how short lived they both were…)

Isn't a belt simply about owning all the techniques and tenets for that belt? Some practitioners are going to have more or less ownership than other practitioners at the same belt level. Many martial arts still don't even use a belt system. Some won't promote a better "fighter" simply because they don't own all the tenets or techniques for the next belt. They might be lacking only one, but extremely good with all other techniques/tenets.

This is right and wrong at the same time. Took me a long time to get my blue, and even though I was good for a white belt, I still didn't feel I knew enough to be a blue, until about 6 months after I got it. The instructor doesn't see every roll of mine, doesn't see every sub, but I do. I know what I'm doing to win and I know what's being done to me to make me lose. So now, as someone who's had a blue for just over a year, I can't imagine being as little as 12-18 months away from purple. Like, it wouldn't make sense. There's no way I should be get purple anytime in the next 2 years. Maybe another 3. I know cause I am 100% outclassed by most purple belts. Sure I might get lucky with something, or have one go-to that might surprise them once in a while, but a purple's general understanding is so far past mine. And it's difficult for the coach to know that cause he's not in my head lol
