I’ve always carried a tiny pen with me, but I’ve struggled with what to write on. My most recent technique is to cut some pieces of watercolor art paper the size of a credit card and put it in the credit card slot in a wallet. They’re extremely durable and water resistant. If I need to make a note, I can take one of those out and write on it. They’re also good for giving your contact information to other travelers you want to keep in touch with later. I only carry two or three at a time and it’s always been enough. Much more efficient and take up our less space than any kind of notebook I’ve run across.

There are two things I can’t seem to travel without. Even on my trip to Detroit earlier this year (PH HQ was awesome -thanks Lauren!) there are two things I can’t travel without. My Trail series Hydroflask and. my Grayl Ti water purifier. I can’t tell you how many plastic water bottles it saved. I can purify the tap water and remove the flavor and smell (along with most of the chemicals) and keep it nice and cold in my Hydroflask. It saves money at every turn not having to buy bottled water aside from the initial cost of the Gray Ti and it saves time running to the store just to get some water. I don’t really like drinking out of any plastic or pouch and prefer water cold or hot and no where in between. 😊 Not the most minimal but a concession I always make. This works especially well in Mexico.

Forr slings, cheap collapsible messenger bags also work fine for day carrry and I've even hiked up mountains with them. Might get them for free at some cons or otherr events. For water bottles, I generally buy in the destination country which may attrract a deposit, but it keeps me from having to pack it. And I can still refill it on the go. If you are a camera-carrying travellerr, there are battery chargers that double as battery banks using the camera batteries of your choice. So use it mainly for keeping your camera running, but can power your phone if you are in trouble, saves from packing a dedicated battery bank. These usually include some SD card slots or even an SD card reader for even more room savings. Plastic rain ponchos are smaller and more comfortable than umbrellas or jackets if you are heading to a hot clime. Some fit in packages as small as the packable bag. For cutlery and quick fixes, I also have a tiny swiss army knife (about 3cm, not the standard 5cm that may sometimes be confiscated by airport security) that has a knife, file, fladhead screwdriver, scissors, pliars and a toothpick. Substitutes bigger tools and also covers nailcare on the go. Fits as a keychain. Though some prefer the credit card format swiss army 'knife' for travels.

At this point, I just do what the ultralight hikers do: Re-use a Smartwater bottle. Lightweight and if I'm forced to get rid of it or if I can't sanitize it, I won't shed any tears It's incredibly easy to replace it with some other re-used carbonated drink bottle. Plastic single-use bags get a lot of hate, but I just think they're better most of the time. I re-use them, they pack way better than the nylon ones. I can double bag heavier loads. I can use them as makeshift trash bags on a flight or out and about. I can put wet or dirty items inside or shield clean clothes inside another bag. They can be recycled in all kinds of different ways and they weigh and cost so little.

Use a PIN for your SIM card if you are using a physical SIM; SIM cards are the key to identity theft schemes that rely on password resets via text message interception. Be aware that peeping your screen for the unlock code then walking off with your phone from a bar counter is common. Phones can be grabbed out of your hand on the street or even in a cafe. A friend was mugged and forced to unlock his phone and disclose the unlock code. Due to the SIM, your main phone is more of a security risk than a tablet or laptop. Consider a dedicated travel phone (your last phone) with accounts and passwords that aren't used for any banking etc accounts. If you download maps, GPS will even work without Wi-Fi. Your phone can expose you to greater financial losses than a wallet full of credit cards.

Never got it why to have a collapsible bottle. If you carry water, collapsible bottles are of no extra use. Because you carry a water bottle filled, and if the thing is empty, you refill it again asap, so what is exactly the point of collapsibility? That it could save space in my bag when it is empty isn't really an argument since I need the space anyway as soon as it is refilled again ... Either I carry a non-insulated drinking water bottle (usually from stainless steel, best case titanium), or I purchase once a bottled water in any super market and refill this bottle as often as I want. That's not only simple and even much less weight than a metal bottle but also much cheaper - worst case, it costs me some cents for the refund.

I agree with all of the points above…the lopsided slings ended up being uncomfortable, and I’m concerned about the security of a backpack. After 35 years of travel (and being lucky enough to not have been pickpocketed so far), my favorite day pack of all time is my current PacSafe MetroSafe backpack, because it resolves both concerns. It’s a small pack so it’s not bulky, but it holds enough to be my airline under-seat carry-on, and it has all of those PacSafe security features that deter pickpockets. Such as metal anti-slash reinforcement in the exterior and straps, zipper locks, and the ability to quickly secure the bag to a table or chair in a restaurant. One reason I picked it is that I often bring more during the day than the Pack Hacker crew does, so the weight contributed to discomfort with slings. I bring a full size camera and lens, a paper travel sketchbook/diary, and sometimes an iPad or art supplies. The PacSafe bag gives me a lot more peace of mind when expensive tech is in the bag. Solid list, but I gotta disagree on the wallet and sling. It doesn't have to be in a wallet per se, but you should have a back up card that isn't always on your person, and it should be stored in something. If you travel long enough, you're gonna get pick pocketed. Prepare accordingly. Slings are good sometimes, but it depends on where you're traveling. They're convenient, but they also function as a bright shiny "Hey, I'm a tourist" beacon in most countries on Earth. Most of the planet also thinks they look ridiculous, if that matters to you. Any sling with a buckle on the strap is easy to steal, as one of my buddies learned. I stopped using them because of the amount of unwanted attention they were attracting. Collapsible day packs (I use the one from Osprey) don't take up much additional space in your pack compared to a sling, allow you to carry a lot more when it's needed, and don't draw anywhere near the same level of attention.

@westegg I've never come across this and been extensively travelling /away for work and leisure since 2006. Experiences differ I suppose. The only ones trying to avoid online bookings were dodgey and looking to rebook for cash stay.

Whatever you do, if you are flying do NOT use a pill organiser. Pills in bottles/packets with labels. If not clearly labeled you could have them confiscated. If travelling overseas (and sometimes within country), you’ll also need a letter from your doctor and many copies made of that letter. Using a pill organiser only is clearly from someone who doesn’t know the rules and is happy for you to potentially die. Have a great day!

FYI - TSA has removed the “clear” requirement for the 3-1-1 liquid bags. They no longer have to be clear so you can use a regular 1 quart Dopp kit.

I take prescription meds for bipolar. I’ll stick to carrying my meds in their bottles. I’ll carry them in a gallon ziploc type bag and in my personal item. I’m Andrew.

I mean in general you really do not need to bring passport with you everyday.

I got one of those passport ID cards, that look like a driver's license, and is the same size. I make sure to have that on me at all time, and a paper copy of the import ant pages of my passport. That way, I can leave the passport itself more safely locked in the hotel safe, and I don't risk losing it, but I can still provide proof of identity and citizenship.

Great advice! Remember, though, some countries strongly enforce laws that require travelers produce passports on demand of law enforcement and allow for stiff fines and/or detention for failure. In those countries, my passport is in a soft lightweight pouch around my neck or waist and under clothing. Only bring it out if required by police.
