I don't want to boast or anything, but I absolutely hate to garden. My sweet Daddy did his best to get me interested, but I hated it. Today, I have a bumper crop of Sand Burrs, Dandelions, some Goat-heads (another sticker for those not of the South), a few Green Briar bushes, and plenty of Johnson Grass, if you are interested I will send you some seeds, Haxman. Love your videos, sense of humor, and your nice family. Hope you get to feeling better soon. The only thing I remember about what Dad told me is "Don't plant onions next to your Irish Potatoes, because they will cry their eyes out", and Don't plant seeds 6 inches deep. They never come up. I tried to raise chickens and they didn't come up either if you plant them too deep. Love ya man!!

BTW, as I understand it, one trick with chickenfeed is to put hot pepper into it -- birds don't have a receptor for capsaicin, so they don't care. Rodents, though, do, so they are much less likely to eat the chicken feed. A friend said he was losing as much as a third of his feed and he didn't even realize it.

@Haxman, Love your videos and humor. Tips from a long-time urban chicken owner, they will be much happier and healthier if they have as much room as possible to roam. We gave up on them free- ranging. They destroy everything. We finally settled on fencing off part of the yard that is just for the chickens. We created a small " backdoor" in the run for the chickens to access their yard. We covered the yard area aka run, with black pheasant netting found online. It protects them from hawks. We lock up the chickens every night after they go in the coop to sleep.

Thanks. Here's a quick tip from a boatbuilder (me) about untreated lumber. Paint the ends before you assemble. 75% of the moisture in a board gets in through the endgrain... so paint or seal just the endgrain. It'll add an extra year or two to the lumber's life. If you are really worried about that little bit of paint leaching into the soil, then use a food grade clear coat, like they use on cutting boards. Personally, I would just use latex house paint and not worry about that tiny amount of paint on the ends.

I built the cement backer beds this last month, cost wise it cost me about what it would for a standing raised cedar bed for two of them, I worried about the bulge too, but I drove 36" stakes around the sides before filling and now I have 1' 6" high beds that are 7x3 and 5x3 that haven't shown any issues. Cannot wait to plant. I'll try to remember to update if anything changes, but so far I am quite confident in the build.

One additional thing I do to my raised garden beds is add a layer or ribbed underlayment (made to go beneath vinyl plank floors) to the inside walls of the beds. They are non-toxic, non-leaching and they prevent soil and water from resting up against the wood. Because it’s ribbed, it also allows air to travel between the plastic and the wood ensuring the wood never stays soaked. I’ve only had them for roughly 3 years but my untreated pine is showing no signs of rotting. Here is the product from Home Depot: DMX 1-STEP 100 sq. ft. 3.6 ft. x 29 ft. x 5/.32 in. I use the Back to Eden method in my raised beds. I just got 15 yards of wood chips to top the beds off and am topping that with compost. I do it in the fall so everything works down by spring. It usually takes a year or two for it to really start working well, the first planting year my wife was ready to kill me! (Her name is also Kim) The pumpkins took over the backyard, the tomatoes took over the side garden, and we just had so much growth! I would pick Cherokee Purple tomatoes and eat them as I mowed the lawn...where I could mow anyway. good things come to those who wait.

Hey, I just realized I gave you just a half of the advice. In addition to painting the fence near herbs white, you should also add Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) to the paint so that it absorbs the UV radiation from the sun. Otherwise there is a high possibility that your plants will get hit with more reflected UV radiation in addition to one coming directly from the sun, which would be harmful to them. As a bonus you will get more heat and light radiated from the fence to the plants which could help in springs and autumns.

I am curious about your thinking on how wood logs would break down and not be a problem since the wood chips were and stunted plant growth? Plant growth is often related to nitrogen available in the soil from decayed organic matter, where as fruit production if often related to the potassium available in the soil. You can tell a bit about these relationships from most fertilizer bags with the numbers showing to indicate what will be provided by 3 fertilizer components.

hey Haxman tx for the video, for any issues with your skin from the chicken pox you can put pure high quality vitamin e oil on any areas that may have had scarring. vitamin e oil from natural food store that is high quality, it will be thick, and a little sticky, so maybe apply at night. rub it in small dab gently in circular motion; and definitely increase your vitamin C intake, as vitamin C assists in the production of collagen and helps to prevent inflammation, in skin and throughout your body. an intake of fresh fruits and vegetables will help skin to heal faster along with plenty of drinking water. oh yeah, thanks for your videos, watched a bunch today and now have to get cracking on these raised beds for my spouse, she's been asking for a while. be well!

I didn't read all the comments so someone may have said this already, but I find 4ft too wide. I like to be able to reach over to the other side instead of having to go all the way round when weeding. Its okay if you only have one, but if you have a whole allotment full, it makes a huge time saving to be able to do a lot of maintenance from one side only and three feet is about my reach. Also at the edges you need to leave an access path whereas you can plant right up to the boundary with two or three feet boxes, which is great if you can also put up a mesh on the boundary for climbers.

I didn't feel it was necessary for me to get them until I got shingles, then it was too late. I had shingles about 3 years ago, but the lasting effect for me is I don't have feeling in my right hand (I'm right-handed), and now I drop things without realizing I dropped something, and my hand cramps up a lot. I've since gotten both of my Shingrix shots, but the damage has been done and is permanent. I hope you and your family have a great weekend! ~Margie

Thank you so much Margie! I had no idea shingles had side effects. I'll look into that. Thanks for the insight. I hope you have a great weekend as well!

@Green Thumbelina That's awful. I had no idea the effects could be permanent. My grandmother had shingles on her back and chest when i was a kid about 50 years ago. She felt miserable for nearly 2 months. That alone made me get the Zostavax when I hit 55. Ten years later, they told me Zostavax offered zero protection and that I needed to get the 2 Shingrex vax. Shingrex kicked my butt possibly because I had that other vaccine. But that still beats getting shingles.

@@krazmokramer I must have thought I was invincible, but after having shingles, I sadly realized that I'm not!😕

Wow, thank you all for sharing about your experiences with shingles, I’ve been bucking any vaccines since the Covid crap but I’m going to look into it again. I had chicken Pox @ 27 years old, it was really rough, but permanent problems suck. Thanks for saying something.

Thank you both for sharing your time-tested wisdom... Kim... I never thought to put out a flat pan of diatomaceous earth for the chickens to dust in...genius! Just allow your mind to make friends with those nice deep barks from your neighbors....its those little high-pitched yapping Ines that make you wanna chunk something heavy over the fence. When you get out past civilization then you have to listen to the coyotes tearing up stuff. You've got it just right where your at. Whenever you put up a video we'll watch it...no worries... 🙂

Great updates, Adam. Kim, is a great camera operator! It was fun to recognize all the old projects as you toured “the estate grounds”. Glad to hear you’re feeling better. That reminds me - I need to get my shingles vaccine. 😄

At the channel 'plant abundance' he coated fabric planters with cement (pure Portland cement not concrete) and made them more moisture loss resistant. Just another idea. As far as I know the process to make cement uses all natural earth materials, it's baked into clinker and then ground up to make all the various cements depending on their percentages of material.

I have had success with galvanized sheet metal( 6 foot fence sheets that someone dumped on my lawn ) , by cutting it in half across the sheet and joining the halves together to form a ring , you can make a bigger ring by adding more sheets and a few cross bars . You can make a range of sizes by using extra panels and support bars. Remember to OVER fill your beds as they will settle and swap your crops out at least every two years to different crops (it dont snow where I live brooooohahahaha ). Good that you mentioned that wood chips will suck nitrogen out of your soil while they are breaking down , but they will release it back after they are composted . It is better if you can leave them to break down for a year before you use them if you can or just add a nitrogen boost to you soil if you cant wait that long.

Bald eagles can be vicious on chickens. Years ago one landed in my chicken pen and killed ten before I get it to fly away. It walked threw the pen just throwing them with its claws.

Make a chicken run, using any kind of sturdy fencing, no more than 6 feet wide, and the eagle's wings will never make it inside. The same is true for any large predatory bird.
