The 150 dollar Orient Bambino is actually beautifully built. It's not only better than a 500 dollar DW, it even holds it's own against a 700 dollar Atlantic. I bought a rose-gold 37 mm Bambino for my wife and it is exquisite in detail, perfectly sized and with an accuracy of +/- 3-4 seconds a day, which is nothing short of Swiss-worthy. So, comparing the DW to the Bambino as if the latter were just barely decent is an affront to the Japanese brand.

The Junghans Max Bill was always my grail watch. However, I was always skeptical due to the hardlex crystal. Now, they have added sapphire, but they also increased prices massively. Even the quartz version costs about 800 €. The Automatic 1300 €. That's out of my budget. So I desided to go for a more affordable option. I knew about Junkers, but unfurtonally they do not come in 38mm. I didn't now about Sternglas. But after this video, I will definitly go for the Sternglas Neos Quartz. Bauhaus design, 38mm, Sapphire Glas, 6mm thickness and an accurate switz made Ronda movement. At a fair price of 200 €. Thanks Ben

The seagull ST17 is not a half-bad movement for the price, I’ve had a couple. If you want a mechanical sub-seconds, they are good for the price. They are actually based on the Miyota 8-series so the DNA of the ST17 is reliable by design.

Great list, Ben. I appreciate the research. Another suggestion in this vein would be the Timex American Documents series. Handsome watches with a clean, minimalist design. Features a great backstory (for anyone who might care) as it's entirely US made except for the movement. Pricey for a quartz watch, but I managed to get one on sale for just under $300 USD.

I'd add the Seiko SUR369 / 373 / 375 / 377 series. 40mm, titanium case and bracelet, sapphire crustal, and a nice accurate quartz movement. Right around $250 USD depending where it's purchased.

I recently covered the minimalist space in my collection with a vintage 1977 Omega Constellation Quartz 191.0010, and it has made me think a lot. Granted, it’s pre-owned, so many first-time buyers won’t go into that space, but it’s a Swiss big brand piece for less of the price of a “fashion watch” with a ton of horological significance. The lack of a seconds hand makes me not being bothered about the alignment of its quartz movement, and all in all it quickly became the dressier piece in the collection. And to top it off, the research and time I put into finding more about it made me learn and have fun.

Some really great options Ben, to think what is available for less than 'fashion' brand prices at far better quality really is astounding. From the many options that were on the list I'd probably look at the Orient and Tissot models. My experience with Tissot has so fa been very good over the years, I've yet to try an Orient but the reviews have been very good and are consistently recommended by trusted reviewers like yourself. Another one that I'd not looked at was the Citizen Axiom, that one will be worth checking out in the flesh assuming they don't all sell out now this video is released. I've had Eco Drive Citizen watches for nigh on a decade and they have all been very good, even the ones with mineral crystals on have lasted very well. Many thanks for sharing.

I recently bought the SEIKO SUR307 in silver and love this watch. Dressy, but also a little bit sporty. It has 10 bar WR, slim 8,4 mm thickness, saphirecrystal, lumiBrite and a wonderful sunburst dial. Got it for 180 Euro recently, what a bargain! Only Downside is the bracelet, which I might switch in the future. Other than that I am very happy. Had a Timex Fairfield before, but was never really happy with that watch as I am now with this SEIKO (also available in other color options like black and blue btw)

The Nixon Timeteller in gold with the green face was the first watch I bought as an adult, with the profits from my first freelance job no less so it's got sentimental value for me. I went for Nixon having grown up loving the Tony Hawk's video games which heavily featured Nixon advertising so the brand felt nostalgic and "more me". I loved the design and I still enjoy it now. It's got me compliments over the years and it's still ticking away strongly! Having bought a couple of Seiko 5's since, I might test it out in the pool on holiday this year as I hadn't even considered the 100M resistance and I can make it my "holiday watch" to get some more use out of it.

Another quality video as always Ben! Have wondered, what’s your opinion on the Timex Marlin 34mm reissue? As a watch KZitemr who airs towards the smaller wrist sizes it would seem like a perfect fit for your channel, but I’ve only seen you mention it in passing. In terms of budget dress watches it’s been the go to in my collection and it’s a low key strap beast, looking great on a nato, Zulu and a mesh bracelet as well as the standard leather. It’s also pretty much one of the only ways to get vintage styling without the risks of vintage watches.

Tip for chromed brass watches. Remove movement and strap and soak in a 20% solution of hydrochloric acid till the chrome dissolves ( chrome dissolves fairly quickly in the acid so check every two hours, brass takes much longer). Reassemble watch and enjoy as it develops a beautiful patina. I have done this with a Vostok Kommandirskie and it looks good. The chromed bezel cam be left alone or also acid dipped. Don't acid dip the crown!

I can´t believe a Grand Seiko Spring Drive has the wrong date every month, how ridiculous. Leave the date, or don´t make me set it. 3. a watch need to be water resist, ideally up to a swim. Why have it fail with a mistake? 4. Time needs to be precise enough : never go slow and perhaps a few minutes a month off when that means not having to open is. Thanks for your video, cool to see these brands getting some attention!

LOL, you mention one of the Braun watches as being unwearable for the majority of wrist sizes (I think, half asleep so apologies if I got that wrong). Another prime example of that for anyone who doesn't have gorilla size wrists is the Casio Worldtimer. I'm not for a moment knocking Casio, generally I think that they are great (own 2 watches of theirs, and numerous other products), but the bracelet on the AE-1200WHD-1AVEF is a REAL nightmare requiring some good skills, a fair bit of strength, and tools to adjust! Not as simple as pushing out some pins, a super sturdy pin pusher is needed, followed by snub nose pliers, access to the internet to watch an instructional vid, and FAR more motivation than I've been able to find so far! Much easier to just take it off and replace it with a NATO. Then again, after spending about 2 hours (As yet not found the motivation for that either) to manage to get it set up, a physical workout may be useful to burn off some mental anguish LOL.
