Whilst the ride is Absolutely harsher than normal tyres I don't find the tyres are louder and they haven't worn any faster. That comes down to what RFT you get. I have the OEM Pirelli cinterato P7, very quiet and so far I have put almost 40,000 KM on them and they're only at about 50%. I have a pump like yours and a repair kit so I don't have to replace my RFTs if I get a flat. Here in Australia if you're get a flat with RFTs you supposed to replace the tyre, I don't intend on doing that if I can avoid it, especially as my tyres cost $330 each here!

Ken Lawton Definitely comes down to the specific RFT. On our 09 E92 335i, the stock Bridgestone potenza rtfs suck handling wise and make a lot of noise... So I’ll replace them with with Conti Extreme Contact Sports most likely. Our 14 S550 had Dunlop rfts which were smooth and quiet (it is an s class after all), but they wore down extremely fast

I am sorry but this is terrible. You seem to be talking from a 2D point of view. Breakdown of alternatives 1) Carry a spare, not an option in many vehicles with runflats so makes no sense for anybody that needs any boot space. 2) Buy a compressor and a tyre repair kit, again makes no sense as it could be sidewall damage, or a large impact on the tyre which leaves both those options useless. Also some vehicles with runflats come with a compressor from factory. 3) Breakdown cover, well this is again poor advice when giving a reason to ditch runflats, depending on where you breakdown, you may or may not get home that night, recovery trucks operate on a KM's basis and depending on your insurance cover and Country this can vary massively. In Oz or Ireland anything over certain KM's with many insurances carry a heavy extra charge. Also time frames of pickup can be really bad depending on location of breakdown, and no certain means of getting home, I have had customers wait 3-4 hours on many occasions for pickup. Imagine having 2 small kids under 3 years old, it is late at night and you are returning back from the hospital, you damage your tyre but can safely drive the rest of the way home because you have runflats on. This happened to my wife when I was not able to go with her. My family returned home with no issues and my little baby was able to be fed and changed at home. I also have heard many stories of a similar types with customers I have dealt with. It doesn't matter if it only happened once, it happened and she got home. I also know in an emergency swerve I would prefer to have runflats on, where soft wall tyres can dismount from the bead much easier. I know the title is clickbait but I think people should be more informed to make decisions.

I can attest to this. Recently needed to change my Pirelli P. Zero RFT's on the rear and the price of them was going to cost 470 EUR for two 255/40/R17's. The guys recommended I change all of the tires to standard tires which costed me the exact same as two RFT's which for me was a no brainer. The fronts were 225/45/R17's which I also changed to standard tires. The steering is lighter and more comfortable to turn and maneuver (you can still feel the road really well !) and the difference in ride quality is night and day ! I do town driving as I live on a small island and the roads are quite bad and this was a major upgrade for me !

So here's my 2 cents on Run Flat tires, being that I work directly for BMW. There are definitely advantages and disadvantages to running both Run Flats and Non-Run Flats. I'll briefly go over why Run Flats are still recommended for your BMW and dispell most of the common issues he brought up. 1. You get what you pay for. If you buy lower tier Run Flats, you will get subpar performance and longevity. Your BMW is a performance vehicle, whether you're buying an M3 or an X1. 2. Your vehicle was designed, tuned, and aligned from the factory with Run Flat tires in mind. That includes the ride and the weight. Looking at your vehicle, I'm guessing it came with the Bridgestone Potenza RE050. Yes, they are loud and ride rough. So your optimum change would have been to the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2. More expensive, sure, but why DECREASE the performance of your performance vehicle? They're more comfortable than the DWS06 (and yes, I've driven both extensively, I even have a set of the Conti's on my personal Subaru). 3. You bought a BMW. Not a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. Expect maintenance costs to reflect that. If you always opt for the most cost-effective thing, you will run into problems, guaranteed. That canister and air compressor, what we call the BMW Mobility Kit, is meant for nail punctures only, and is a short-term solution to get you to a repair center, something that you should do immediately. However, what do you do in the event of a blowout? Your Run Flat would drive you safely to a service center. It may not be a comfortable ride getting there, but I've had vehicles roll in with half the sidewall missing before. The bottom line is don't cheap out just to save a few dollars or sacrifice the performance of your car. While there are good (and great) Non-Run Flat options on the market, it's still not recommended and you won't see any extra life over a quality set of Run Flats. PS, get your BMW aligned at a proper BMW Service Center every time you change your tires, regardless of where you go. Your tires and your wallet will thank you.

I followed suggestions about changing over to regular tires on my 2015 BMW 550i. It was a great idea until I encountered a flat on my rear right tire. Just 2miles from the closest tire shop I decided to try my luck and pulled over immediately to notice that my tire was completely shot beyond repair.I pulled over to change into the sparetire which was in the trunk of my car. I am contemplating to go back and replace all tires for my good old Michelin Run Flats. BMW vehicles are heavy and my beautiful Rohana rims deserve better care in spite of any noice produced by tougher ROF tires. A fix with flat tire kits beats buying a tire and having to have them balance and mounted any time. I recommend OEM tires as suggested by the vehicle’s manufacturer.

Thanks for your BMW videos. I have a 2012 335i with the run-flats. I had it a week or so and driving to Vegas (975 miles) I picked up a small nail. I added air until I get to Vegas. BMW didn't have the tires and I couldn't find anyone to fix it or replace it. When I got back home, Les Schwab fixed it. Because of the spare issue I replaced them at 40K. 7 years later, I pick up another small nail, but because it was closer to the edge "they" won't fix it. The tire still had plenty of life, so I added Slime and it is working fine probably 2K miles later. I do carry the compressor and patch/plug kit also. Next time, I will probably go with real tires as I agree how often do you get a flat. I'm thinking adding slime to any tire is a smart thing either tires.

Runflat tires are safer if you get a puncure at high speed - you'll just see info on cluster what tire pressure is low and you'll have to reduce speed. If you're on autobahn, you feel much more confident - you can just drive to the next exit without having to pull over. With runflat tires you have also very low risk of damaging tire sidewall (it's much thicker), so tire blowout is almost impossible - it's very important when you're cruising at high speed - blowout at 200 km/h is the last thing you want :-)

Here is something to consider. If you have a blow out, and that tire blowout causes you to crash into another vehicle, the accident is so bad someone actually dies. Now on the one hand it could be ruled an unavoidable accident and no charges will be pressed. However if negligence is determined to be the cause of the accident then you are looking at Vehicular Manslaughter. If your car was designed for and fitted with runflat tires and you swap to normal tires that could potentially be used against you the same way bald tires can be used against you. The manufacturer designed, built, and tuned your vehicle for run flat tires, by not using it the vehicle is operating in a manner not intended, and not tested for safety, and that you as the owner of the vehicle are aware the car is designed to be on runflats and that you neglected this fact and put normal tires on there in pursuit of a quieter more comfortable ride, as opposed to buying a vehicle with a more comfortable ride. And that if the car had been on runflats as it was designed for, the blow out would not have caused your car to veer off into another car. It is incredibly irrisponsible to tell people to get rid of runflats as the do serve as a safety measure. You hit a pot hole you didn't see could cause your tires to blow out, on a normal tire that par of your car will drop 4 inches or more (10cm or more) at speed if one corner of your car has a sudden. Drop like that it's not going to be pretty. This guy may have had only 2 flats in 10 years, but that's him, personally I e had more than 10 flats since 2014 most if them required new tires as the damage to the sidewall was to severe. I currently drive a C6 Corvette, it did not have run flats and when I bought it, about 3 weeks after I bought it, a bolt went through the tire, not a screw, a thick ass bolt. All the air went out of my tire really quickly, and needless to say, a hold that big was not patchable, I tried to plug in myself, and was only successful by stacking three plugs and stuffing it into the hole, and even then, I had to use copious amounts of rubber cement to seal it properly. I replaced those with run flats, and the last flat tire I had I did not have to worry about it for 5 days, at which point I was finally able to get off work and go get a new tire

Another down-side to RFTs can be delays in replacing them. I live in a metro area of the US with 2mil population and it still took one shop a week to get a replacement for my e92. I am very concerned about getting a puncture out in the boonies, driving to the nearest car shop, and then being literally marooned for days while a replacement is shipped in. One thing I've done. When I had to replace the left side tires, I kept the 3/4-worn right side pair as garage spares, quickly accessible if need be.

I had reinforced sidewall tires but they weren't run flats but they did prevent damage to the mag wheel....that was the worst. And I had to call a tow truck for everything except the VW. 37 years of driving and only 4 flats of which only 1 was my fault. Odds are exceptional. I prefer the tire repair canister. It has a gel and air pressure in the can. Long enough to get to a garage unless it's a sidewall and I've never had a sidewall bust except in a pot hole. No more of those pot holes. I know where they are now...and most of our roads were repaired up here.

Had the stock runflats on my 2008 e92 335i that I got just over a month ago, 2 days I had a puncture in my front passenger tyre so thought I’d just change them all to normals, Michelin PS4, £760 and would 100% do it again, well worth the money it is a night and day difference! Handles so much better sounds almost silent compared to the RFT, much comfier ride too I don’t feel half as many bumps and it honestly feels like I have a new suspension!😂

I hate the RFTs that came on my car. I didn't realize how bad the ride was until I put on my traditional winter tires. When the RFTs are due for replacement, I'm switching to some traditional tires. Not sure if I will go with a UHP summer or all season.

hi ,like your video. on my X1 i have recently changed all my runflats(after 35000 miles) to Goodyear vector 4 seasons. the change is fantastic as regards road noise--lack of, comfort over bumps and potholes of which there are many, the steering feels truer, the mpg is about the same, and I have the comfort of knowing that the tyres are fine in the winter season, which in the south of england is fairly mild.

My used 2009 328i E-93 N-52 came with two sets of tires. The summer tires are new RFT. The winter tires are new but could be standard tires. I wish the previous owner had saved $2000 by not buying tires, and allowing me (an old guy) to have softer tires.

Listen man! I live in South Florida and my roads are perfect. Never got a flat in over 10 years. So these damn runflats that come on my BMW now and in the past or my wife's BMW were ditched the first week for regular tires. These low profile runflats are garbage. They run down fast and are uncomfortable.

HI Justin: Same month I purchased my E93 2012 in 2017, I changed the run-flat tires to regular tires and just like you, the difference in ride quality was like night and day. I purchased also a spare 17" tire, I haven't tried it yet, I'm afraid it won't fit because of the brake calipers Like you said the odds of having flat tire are very hight, lucky me....so far. I am running 225/4018 on all four corners. Planning to go wider as soon as I fix/powder coat my rims. I got a set of Racing Dynamics GRS and they look awesome.

You might want get a AAA outright or even State Farm's road side service. It might be cheaper, and your insurance company won't have more information collected about you. Those ODB 2 port add on wifi plugs come with Road Side assistance, as well as soon credit cards. You may also be able to add it to your cell phone plan.

My Corvette has 17" front, 18" rear, so obviously doesn't carry 2 spares. I had regular tires late one night when something immediately flattened my left rear. Took the next freeway exit and pulled int a closed gas station. It was a loooong time before the flatbed arrived to get me home. During that hour wait, there were groups of thugs casing the place, and here I am, and unarmed old white dude in a fancy red corvette. I felt like a sitting duck. Next set was run flats.

I have been through the whole runflat and non runflats throughout the years and i too was convinced non run flats were so much better. However as you say losing the boot space is a massive negative and carrying a compressor is standard. However pumping the puncture repair gel into the wheel is a NO NO by doing this it may bandaid the tyre as a temp fix however i will make it a complete pain to repair. If you pump that stuff into your tyre you will end up having to buy a new one so you might as well run the risk and lose a few mpg and use runflats. I still have my spare tyre in case my tyres side wall explodes. I would only use non runflats on my winter / cold season set when i drop down to 18" which are a lot cheaper. For the rest of the year its premium summer run flats.

Sometimes, when you get a flat tire, the tire is so destroyed that you can't just put a plug in it. How do I know...I had a flat coming down from Mt. Ranier, and the tire was destroyed. But I had a spare so I was ok. This was in my VW.

I've had them both on a mercedes C class and BMW 4-series. Terrible ride and "thud-thud" sound going over bumps in the BMW. I've somewhat concluded that run flats are not that great on a "sport" suspension and tolerable on non-sport suspensions.

This is the first time I have ever left a comment. I have been driving for 30 years and have had two flats. THE most important thing about not carrying a spare is the danger created by not having one. Because of those two flats, I refuse to drive a car without a spare. Driving thru a construction zone on a highway . Now you have two wait for a tow service because your tire has been destroyed. Throw on your spare and go. Also, Put a bottle of slime in your tires and it will fend off a nail for a day. I run it in my bicycles.
