Folks, the mule is not a horse. The donkey is not a horse. The cruelest thing you can do to a mule or donkey is not respect the uniqueness of the animal and treat him like a horse.
Sure, many folks are well meaning, but when you hear someone interchanging the word “horse” for mule or donkey, there’s a good chance their advice will wreck your mule, if not cause serious injury to you or the animal.
This goes for lateral flexions.
The mule is not like a horse. This animal will run right through his shoulder. Mule’s are just as fast running sideways through his shoulder as he can forward. Horse trainers want you to move their head clear this way or clear that way to make them soft - when you actually ride the mule and work with the mule you find that they don’t get soft - they tense up!
You’ll go to turn and instead of a nice soft animal, you’ll get an animal that decides to run off through his shoulder.
In this video, Steve Edwards from Queen Valley Mule Ranch will go into more detail and examples as to why lateral flexions are not right for the mule or donkey and what to do instead.
Watch him build a foundation in a way that you can use and actually build a foundation for your animal on your own!
