I can count on one hand the amount of SPEED BOATS I have TRAVELLED on in my life. This JOURNEY from PANAHACHEL to SAN LUCAS across LAKE ATITLAN in GUATEMALA will forever be ingrained in my MIND because of how CRAZY and GNARLY it was...and it was also TERRIFYING!!!
After 5 amazing DAYS it was time for this BACKPACKER to start acting like a backpacker and travel to another location. Panajachel is awesome but 5 days was more than enough time to see all the TOURIST ATTRACTIONS and Lake Atitlan has plenty of other towns to explore. I decided on San Lucas which was all the way across the lake, it was supposed to be very peaceful and had less TOURISTS than everywhere else so that sealed the deal for me.
The best way to TRAVEL around the lake is across it in a BOAT. I headed towards the DOCK with my SUITCASE and BACKPACK and decided to navigate the dozens of other travellers in search of the correct boat. You don't really need to speak Spanish (which I don't), just shout out your destinations and eventually you will be guided towards the correct boat. The price to San Lucas from Panajachel is only 25 q's.
The boats will carry about 30 PASSENGERS comfortably. I wanted to FILM the whole experience so I sat at the front...right at the FRONT. The boat driver asked me if I was sure about where I was positioned and I nodded my head. He sort of shrugged his shoulders and cranked the throttle. The first part of the journey was not too bad, a few minutes to a neighbouring town, less than a kilometre along the SHORE. No waves, no bumps.
Next it was off to San Lucas which involves going right across the lake, past the center where I now understand the waves are at their biggest. The boat driver once again gave me a look, this time it was almost a smile. Then he cranked the THROTTLE and the boat and reached 50MPH very quickly. Being right at the front of the boat I felt the full force of every single wave. I was catapulted into the air on several occasions. It was too late to move seats, I just had to hold tight and endure what would be the bumpiest and wildest ride of my life.
Amazing FOOTAGE....yes. Sore bottom...also yes. My advice is sit in the middle of the boat, the closer you are to the front the more violently you will feel the force of the waves.
