Thanks for speaking up AP! My wife and I will be 60 next year. We've been married for 41 years. We remember the days that you kept food as long as you wanted it. There were no expiration or best by dates. You simply opened the container and if it was good you ate it if not you tossed it. We were not stressed out by expiration dates or best by dates are best used by dates or any of that other stuff. My adult children who have their children of their own now live by expiration dates. They throw away anything that's near or past its date of expiration, best use by or whatever other gimmick they have stamped on the container. I am no nutritionist, doctor, lawyer or anything like that. But I can tell if food in a container is good and when it's not. I am not afraid to eat food W A Y past its posted date.

Pie filing is something I’ve been stocking. Can really help the sweet tooth and thinking of my kids too. If stuff bad out there, something to bring a smile. If stuff is crazy bad , I can easily make tortillas, put some pie filling in one, fold it, grill it in a pan. Sprinkle with powered sugar and cinnamon. Little dessert. Quick, easy. If you have bread can use that, take off crust and pinch the bread together around the filling. Can throw right on the grill outside.

I too have had great success in vaccum packing chocolate chips and nuts in canning jars. It is important to keep them in the dark or they turn white and of course heat will melt chocolate. You can always place the jars in a paper bag or box in order to keep them.in the dark. Also if you have cake or muffin mixes for a long time and you make one and it doesn't rise, don't throw out the rest of the boxes, just add baking powder when using them next time. In times of high stress, comfort foods really help calm the body.]

❤ I buy chocolates after any holiday, and enjoy it any time I like a little piece. Hard candy comes in handy when a really dry throat gives you a hard time, so I keep a little in my purse and some in a jar. ❤ Watch any grumpy little kid when you give them a little chocolate, makes their day. 😎 I always make sure we drink water after anything sweet, so it does not stick to our teeth. That becomes a healthy habit. 😎 Nothing wrong with chocolate blooming, looking kinda white on the surface. Use it as chocolate chips, or make a hot chocolate from scratch.

You can make your cake without eggs, oil, water or whatever else the box calls for. Just mix in a can of pie filling. It won't come out as fluffy, but it will be dense and sticky and sweet. Try cherry for chocolate and white cake, apple for white cake and don't forget pumpkin with white cake or spice cake or whatever takes your fancy. Bake at 350F for 20 - 30 minutes depending on your oven 'til a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out mostly clean. =^..^=

Take raisins, dried cherries and dried cranberries (or whatever combination of these you like) and add enough to a canning jar to half-fill the jar. Now add enough brandy or bourbon or rum to fill the jar. Press out any air bubbles. Put on the lid and ring and tighten. Set aside in a dark, cool pantry for at least a week before using. Will keep for years. When making a cake or dessert bread, use a slotted spoon to take out some of the steeped fruit. Dice the fruit if you want smaller pieces and stir the fruit into the batter and bake. Most of the liquor will cook off, but you will have tender, flavorful fruit bits in your cake or dessert bread. You can also replace some of the liquid used in your cake batter with some of the liquor used to steep the fruit. This steeped fruit is especially good when baked in a spice cake or a carrot cake. Add some chopped walnuts or pecans or sliced almonds to the batter and some ground cinnamon and you will have a non-traditional fruit cake that people will actually want to eat.

Maybe use a little oil or butter on the paper so it peels off easily. Add as much or as little apple cider vinegar and mustard as you wish to taste. Thank you so much for this information. It was a food item that I didn't think would store well. You have shown me several ways to store for long term. I like the chocolate bars in a food saver bag. I hope you will do a video on opening them. I assumed that if you kept items in their original packaging they would go bad because if any air trapped inside the package. You showed me wrong when you opened up the hazelnut candy. You have been I so helpful to me when it comes to items to purchase and how to preserve. A QUESTION FOR ANY VIEWER. I slightly freeze meats that, if processed in a food saver bag, would have the juices come out of the packaging. Several times I have had to redo because it didn't seal. What I would like to do is put the item, i. e. Hamburger, chicken, other types of meat, in the food saver bag, not sealed, and place in freezer for a few hours and then seal for long term freezing. Will the food saver bag seal if it is frozen? It would save me lots of work if I could do this. I just don't know if the bag would work. Thanks.

The bag will seal if the meat is frozen, just make sure there are no sharp edges on the meat so that it won't poke thru the plastic; you can place your un-frozen meat in the bag and then place a piece of a paper towel along the top of the bag and the paper towel will capture the moisture, also you can wrap your meat in butcher paper or parchment paper prior to vacuum sealing it and that has always worked well for me. I hope this helps.

@@AlaskaPrepper .. thanks, very helpful. I hadn't thought of wrapping in some clear wrap, freeze and then process in food saver bag. We have a new butcher who processes our deer meat every year. I noticed that after I take off the white freezer paper, he has wrapped the meat in plastic wrap. I thought it was a good idea, I don't know why I didn't think of it. Thanks again, Marcia

Yes, agree to keep sweets around, ingredients for cake, pie fillings, brownies, cookies, even rice krispies sealed up, dehydated marsmallows and butter or ghee to make rice krispie treats...list goes on...I mainly do that for family members with a sweet tooth...I’m good with fruit...just canned up cherries and peaches and thinking about pineapple for an upside cake. Nice to have on hand and will provide calories and be a treat if you can’t buy them later. Raisins can be soaked in warm water to soften before using in baking. You can freeze ripe bananas in their skins...skins will turn black, but bananas can be used in baking or put into a smoothie, or mashed up for baby food.

Great tips! Thanks! Don't foget you can freeze butter and you can crack and mix eggs and freeze them raw. Butter freezes indefinitely and eggs hold up well 8-12 months.

Yum! I have a sweet tooth and keeping a stash was high on my list for shtf. $ tree has one gallon plastic jugs a I filled two of them with a mix of hard candies. I figure one piece a day will do it for me so I have enough for a long term event. I also have the breakfast biscuits from the $ tree. They come 2 in a pack wrapped in mylar with 8-10 in a box (4-5). They are whole grain and have protein, vitamins and minerals. They are a good treat with coffee or tea and they have a far out best buy date (2 years!). I have a jug full of those too and eat them and buy them often so rotation isn't a problem...lol. IMO a must have.

I've vacusealed chocolate bars very successfully for years, long before I ever started thinking about prepping! I've been using the Hershey's chocolates for all my candy making, which used to be quite extensive. It's also some of my favorites for nibbling. I'll be adding a oxygen absorber into my packs, and jars in the future.

After Halloween is a great time to buy tons of discounted candies. I bought 50 bags last year all dry canned in jars. I leave them in the individual wrapped wrapper. I also have chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, butterscotch chips, and white chocolate chips in jars. Raisins, dates, dried berries and fruit in jars. If they get hard just place in microwave with 1/2 teaspoon water for one minute and steam them. They are perfect Like fresh purchase. Trail mix is another thing I have Jared up. No bake cookies, and rice crispy treats work well also. Marshmallows expand when vacuum sealed but go back to shape when unsealed. Have fun with it! Hugs

You're right on - late hubby & I have not died or suffered ill consequences from consuming expired products - especially those laden with sugar - jams, cake mixes, cookies etc. Perhaps it's our frugality, but we can't stand the thought of throwing out any consumables (like these) when so much of the world suffers from hunger - people & animals alike. Never forget the helpless animals.

I compared Scotts to Costco Kirkland brand and Scotts has more sheets per rolls and the savings. A 30pk Kirkland in Sacramento CA is 24.95. So big savings on buying scotts case. TY Bro.
