exactly what happened to me. I told myself over and over 'don't forget the sticker, don't forget the f*cking sticker', like 100 times, and then what did I do? Forgot the BLOODY F*CKING STICKER! Thank GOD I was able to squeeze enough thermal paste out of the two tubes I had laying around from when I'd done cooler swaps on my old PC (and that's what made it even more embarrassing, it wasn't even my first time installing a cooler despite it being my first complete build) when I removed it cause otherwise I'd have had to wait several days to finish my build, as all the stores were closed for Easter the next 2 days where I live >.

Fun Fact: They put those stickers there to protect that surface from scratches since even a tiny scratch could make a huge thermal difference. You want it to be as smooth as possible thats the reason they use stickers as protection.

only lowend coolers have a flat surface. good quality ones are designed to match the average IHS of a specific generation of CPU. pro overclockers often need to sand them down manually to get a perfect fit. if your using good quality thermal paste the most you can expect to lose is 5 degrees. you'd need to do the risky process of going direct die with liquid metal to get more. provided the cooler has enough surface area to absorb the extra heat.

fun fact, cpu cooler manufacturers put that there to protect the copper plating that makes contact to your cpu to prevent it from getting scratches or more during shipping processes, so your cpu cooler can make perfect contact without scratches hindering its cooling capabilities, just wanted to share this just incase anyone is potentially confused about why manufacturers actually put those on there.

I used to burnish down CPU's until you'd have a copper mirror. And same with mated heat sink. While it only made about 5C difference, when you overclock a celeron 300 to a pentium 450mhz... wowzas. That was a really fun thing. We were buying 100 dollars procs and unlocking the L2 cache, and turning it into a 900 dollar CPU. This was 97 or so.

No reason to put it there... Só many manufacturers re-apply thermal paste and then attach a plastic thing to the bottom os the plate that both prevents any damage tk it and also maintains a 1mm gap to it so that the thermal paste doesn't get wiped in shipping. That's the way to go. No stickers!
