Don’t be embarrassed Landon. It’s all part of the learning process. Think about how much practical experience and knowledge you are gaining about your bike each time something fails or needs adjustment. Old wise knowledgeable mechanics got that way the same way. Every fix is a new feather in your cap. Plus the drama is good for content 😂. Keep going!

Thanks my friend this is really kind to hear and yeah like I said it feels just like such a foolish mistake. However I really do feel like I've learned a ton from all this. On this channel one day I would like to be in foreign lands all alone, and something as little as making sure your bike isn't sagging too much and chain tension can be so vital. The chain was in my opinion always set fine, but when I would sit on the bike and add all the weight thats when it went wrong. Never knew, but now I do. Yeah the old wise mechanics did get there that way, but today with the internet you'd think I would have taken the time to find this information before it happened. Its okay and really I am just grateful I discovered it before I got in the middle of no where and it failed. Yeahhh plenty of drama on this trip haha

Landon do not feel bad. KTM dirt bikes are built to be as light as possible for enduro riding. To achieve that, they sacrifice reliability. It has been surprising to me watching your journey that something has not broken before now. Fortunately, you were blessed to be somewhere where you can get the repair done and not out alone in some desert on your own. God is good!

Thanks Bill! Yeah your totally right, you get the light weight and the power, but you sacrifice more frequent maintenance and mechanical tolerances that have to be respected more often than not. Yeah thats the main thing also that I wasn't stranded somewhere, I was close enough to where I didn't feel any risk just being able to drive it over to Guadalajara. God is good, and I guess this is the price that has to be paid to really understand these machines, and continue to learn how to better take care of them.

Listen up, pal. The reason folks love your channel is because it is honest and earnest. You manage to entertain an audience BOMBARDED by other crap on KZitem because your viewers live vicariously through your experiences. Some lived them many moons ago and are reminded of those special times, some yearn to try it themselves and are looking for ideas, and some wish they could try this but know they can't due to age, physical inability or financial means. But I will do something I know better than to do... to speak for others. We all expect, nay demand, transparency... the joy and pain and triumph and failure... because otherwise, you are no different than the myriad other KZitem jerks that edit everything so that they look perfect. You have a following because you are real in a vast sea of fake. Please take this to heart. Show us what you are willing to show us, but don't hide what makes you a fallible human like the rest of us bums. Your audience will know, and nobody likes being lied to. I love the idea your saying that some people are watching and being reminded of journeys they've taken in the past. An idea that I sometimes think of is how crazy the idea that I can document in such detail my life. The things I would have done to see a video of my grandpa or ancestors. We have books and some written records, but its so interesting to me the way we can literally record moments of our lives, that hopefully my kids will be interested in watching one day. So that makes me really happy to hear that maybe some people weren't able to document these experiences in as much detail, but can pull from similarities they find in these videos. For those who cant go I feel honored to be able to live in this time where I can share in such a cool way through video. Again thanks for the words of encouragement Matthew. Cheers my friend!

The main reason for the countershaft failure is the oem front sprocket with the rubber insulator and the oem dome washer. With the combination of the two it lets the front sprocket move on the countershaft. Unfortunately once it starts to wear their is no stopping it. I have a 2022 500 exc-f six days also. I was fortunate enough that I watched a video on KZitem that Taco Moto posted that pointed out this problem. The best solution when you get your bike repaired is to use a front sprocket from a 500 xcf-w and a new dome washer. Don't let this problem get you down it could happen to anyone.
@LandonBishoff
Жыл бұрын
Ohhh interesting! I hadn’t heard about that yet. So just not enough pressure on the sprocket to hold it in place enough. I feel like I have seen taco moto selling a different dome washer though. I kinda just thought it was for looks though. Good to know!

@@LandonBishoff I forgot to mention a couple of other things you mentioned in the video. If you run to much chain tension it can also cause the countershaft bearing to fail or the left side case to crack around the swingarm pivot point. There is a few minor things to address with the 500's then after that you have the perfect bike for the type of riding you are doing. Glad to help when I can. Keep posting the great videos!
@LandonBishoff

Super good to know, yeah im gonna do a pretty good overhaul on this bike and give it some good love. Yeah also I know the 500 isn't the easiest platform to do what im doing, but im kinda at a point where I do believe its worth it, and im willing to make the sacrifices to learn how I can stay on top of this bike to do this kind of traveling.
@bengtphorks4756

Probably too late but the secret to preventing the countershaft from wearing is to keep the splines greased. Any grease will work, it keeps a process called fretting from taking place between the countershaft and sprocket. Fretting is pressure welding and then breaking the weld at a microscopic level. It looks like rust coming from the joint between the two parts. My 2012 KTM 500 has 32000 miles on it and the countershaft still looks like new because I grease the splines every 500 miles when I change the engine oil.
@LandonBishoff

Great video! Liked the beach and the drone shots. Part of the reason the countershaft and sprocket are warn is because your hitting the trails and pushing the bike which is awesome. Landon, I have been riding bikes my whole life. Even when I have performed mechanical services/repairs etc on my bikes many times over, I sometimes mess stuff up. It's just the way it goes. I can feel your frustration because I have felt it many times over... damaging parts or rushing and breaking something.. then the feeling of money wasted. For instance, this weekend I crashed my DJI mini 3 into the river, it was only in the water for a few seconds, but looks like the motherboard is toast... and I have 2 yearly highlight rides coming up, so no time to wait for a replacement motherboard from China, I am gonna have to go buy a new one if I want to have it on my trips. God speed my friend... you will get it fixed up. Thank you for sharing, I love watching your updates.

Hi Landon, the pictures you put out are unique and so is your adventure. Don’t blame yourself for this technical issue, the bike is just not built to last in such conditions and heavy luggage (rather blame Austria) PS. all you can do is check chain tension regularly, clean it and don’t over grease it 😉

My friend recommended your KZitem. Have not seen it in the comments. But have to say that the cause of worn counter shaft splines is most likely cause of an aftermarket front sprocket that is to hard (sure might last longer but not worth the damage they cause). Overloading the bike and even if chain has been to tight will not put any load on the splines that would cause this damage. You would damage chain, axle itself or bearings on axle long before splines are affected. Any wear should be in the sprocket itself if it is the correct hardness so any play will go away when you replace the worn out sprocket. Stay far away from aftermarket front sprockets. If there is some good deal on a kit buy it and toss front sprocket in the bin and use the rest. Stick with OEM sprockets in the front and avoid this. Hope you get it sorted quickly and not to expensive. Sadly have not been very impressed with mechanics and shops (even KTM dealerships) over the years and have ended up doing most of my own wrenching if possible.
@LandonBishoff
Жыл бұрын
ohhh interesting, yeah I haven't heard that either. To be honest I haven't ran an aftermarket front sprocket for very long on it. All the US BDR's I did were on the stock front sprocket. It was only here in Mexico I ran that aftermarket supersproxs. So that sprocket has only been ran for about 4K miles. I think some damage occurred during the BDRs and then im sure it was a variety of things that lead it to this point, a harder aftermarket sprocket im sure didn't help. I mean ideally I would love to try and do the work myself, but without proper tools and a place to do it it just doesn't make sense. Also I don't have enough confidence to take it on myself in that setting.
@DirtyADV

@@LandonBishoff Any minor wear causing some play and then adding a sprocket that is harder then shaft each impact going from braking back to accelerating will start to chip away on the splines and the softer material will be the one seeing the most damage in your case the shaft. Downsides are. Cost, rear wheel weight, a third wheel bearing and the cushions do require replacement. I have no visible wear on mine at 4k miles. I have read life is 10-20k miles. I had to replace a countershaft in my 530 exc, not that hard actually, but without a space to do it there, that's a pretty tough. rtwPaul has done rebuilds by pulling and crating the engine for a flight home - might be an option sometday. Also, I noticed the clutch cover, did you put a different clutch in this bike? The thumper is hard on these components since the power comes in one very hard power stroke - a lot of highway riding isn't good for the trans and final drive. There are some rubber dampers in the clutch to help with this constant pounding those components take and you may consider a cush hub in the rear wheel to help as well. Slack in the chain I guess also helps - and I wonder if these very hard aftermarket front sprockets are not good - it seemed like there was no wear on the sprocket and it was all on the shaft. All in all, it's just part of the adventure - things go wrong, bikes break, plans change - keep your chin up.

Hey Matt yeah I’ve heard of people throwing their engine in a checked luggage and flying it out. Yeah to Clutch is just stock. It’s the original and it honestly feels great! But since I’m opening everything up I’ll just throw a new one in. I am interested in checking out a Cush drive as well, you got any recommendations? Yeah the front sprocket was relatively new. I don’t think this damage just came from the Mexico trip. I think the BDRs in the states had to have started wearing on it at those points. Thanks for the words of encouragement Matt! Yeah it’s all just apart of it all. Pay to play I guess haha

@@LandonBishoff Yeah, it's not a cheap hobby ;) I saw the engine cover with the D and wondered if you were running a different clutch, but later realized it was on the stator side, not the clutch side. I haven't put a cush on my bike, but I have one with around 300 hours and 11k miles, I should check and see how the countershaft is holding up. I've done most of the west BDRs and some 1k miles in Baja. The bike has been very solid.

@@LandonBishoff Yeah, I like the 500, it's light and easy to work on. I've done maybe 20k miles the last 5 years on 3 bikes, a 2008 530 exc-r and 2 2021 500 exc-f's - I had a bike stolen and recovered in 2021/2022. Trip pics: mattbillenstein.smugmug.com/ I've also got some youtube videos from a few years ago, but I don't like editing video really. You can see I had the same problem in Idaho on my TAT trip: mattbillenstein.smugmug.com/TAT-2018/i-45kHJVd/A - I had to uhaul the bike back to California and fix that. The fun starts about here: mattbillenstein.smugmug.com/TAT-2018/i-vsTwzVV/A After reassembly, I rode that bike about 4k miles on the north BDRs from San Francisco to Salt Lake City - but at that point, it needed a top-end and I decided I wanted a new bike, so the south BDRs I did on a new 2021 500 exc-f. Anyway, it's all fun, the adversity is part of it. People think we're crazy for doing this sorta stuff and doing it alone, but either the world calls you to adventure, or it does not. I'm glad I got the call and I imagine you are as well ;)

I've seen people do that same thing. They tighten their chain too tight. You have to allow for the tension caused by the swingarm pivoting through its full range of motion. Amateur mistake. This is why you should ride for a few years before going on big adventures. If they have to split the engine case you should replace all the bearings, clutch, piston, and timing chain. Labor in Mexico is cheap. I wouldn't even ask how much that is. The parts are going to be KTM prices. If you were going to make this mistake it's good it was in a big city in Mexico where people work for free. Do that same repair in Southern California and you are going to pay dearly for that amateur mistake. It is clear you need to lean more about the basics of your bike. Not setting chain tension properly is about as basic as it gets. The only thing less basic is not knowing how to chain your oil filter.

I mean I think we just have 2 completely different views on life. I 100% disagree with the idea of "you should ride for a few years before you go on a big adventure" Brother no amount of preparation will prepare you for it all. Things are gonna happen to everyone... It might not be the countershaft for you.. But something's gonna happen... and I disagree with the idea that one day you arrive to an efficient amount of knowledge to be "ready". You can read all you want, watch all the videos, read, etc... You still won't be ready.. The only way to know is to do. I respect and advocate for the idea of "Just do" if you don't know just do. If you're scared... Just do. If you don't understand the basics of a motorcycle... just do... You'll figure it out. No one ever lead an interesting fulfilled life by waiting for the perfect moment. And as you can see in the next video. Not all mistake's are a negative... This literally lead to me getting sponsored. It allowed me to meet people interested in what I was doing to the point where they literally put money out of their pocket to support me. I believe the universe rewards people who follow their heart and pursue their dreams despite not being "ready". And I can tell you that theory has proven true and true more times than once in this adventure. Appreciate the concern I just disagree on the ideology and mindset that your opinion comes from. Its not to say that its bad... I just disagree
