New to home fish keeping but studied fish biology/ecology in college and work with fish as a career. This channel has some of the best info that I've come across with easy to understand analogies and explanations. Recently got an air stone for my new tank and noticed the foaming on the surface, which caught my eye. Sure enough, ammonia. Thanks for the tip and I'll keep that in mind.

I just found your channel today and I've subscribed for the simple reason you've pronounced the name "Betta" properly. Your advice is spot on, thanks.

@@cheers2023 long enough to be an accepted variant imo lol, backing up and saying 'bayta, wait no, bettah' is a lot more intrusive to the conversation than just forgetting and slipping into more colloquial dialect. The ones that get ME: it's Godeeeeva chocolate- call Belgium, see how they answer the phone!- the g in misogyny is a hard GREEK g, pronounce it!- as annoying as someone saying 'Jeeradelli chocolate', and insisting in Italian the g is soft (while you're internally screaming 'Not followed by an aitch!') and THERE IS NO ACCENT ON THE FINAL E IN FORTE. It's 'fort', and I have been known to consider proper usage as an informal IQ test. I love your videos, they are so informative. I do have a question about guppies, I am at a loss what to do. I am in the UK and I can't get hold of general cure, I tried pimafix and melafix together as suggested and tried dosing my tank with salt, then changed 30% and tried an anti internal bacterial treatment but lost 4 of 6 guppies. Nitrite 0 nitrate 0 pH 6.5-6.8 gh 120 kh 40. I am gutted. Planted tank, there are other fish in there and they are all fine. Guppies presented with bloating and dropsy, other 2 that died opposite way, really skinny and signs of fin rot but melafix did nothing for them. Any suggestions from anyone appreciated. 2 left but 1 of them looks a little bloated also. I did try peas too... 😉

Gemma Triggs I’m having the same problem getting medications for my fish here in the uk since I moved from Florida where I could get anything I needed. I’m no expert but the fact you have zero nitrite is not good, if your tank cycled you should always have some nitrite, ideally less than 20ppm. For all I know I should have said nitrate instead of nitrite or I’ve got my parts per million wrong so just check it out. It’s the last part of the nitrogen cycle, It usually means your tank lacks beneficial bacteria and never fully cycled.

Hi Cory, So happy I found your videos and your online store. Wish I was closer to visit your brick and mortar store I would be there every weekend. From your tour videos looks like your shop and operation are "fish heaven"!. :-) I live in South Florida, you are always welcome (family included) to stay with us. I know that sounds weird but sorry I feel like I know ya. Or if you just need some local advice, I can help you. Sounds like from this video you are trying to plan to come to Florida to see our fish. I am an avid scuba diver and love the ocean but I only have freshwater planted tanks haha I participate in conservation events and Lionfish derbies to cull the very detrimental invasive species. I have placed a few orders on your shop and have always been pleased with the quality, speed, and care that goes into my orders. So a big HI from Florida to you, your family, and the rest of the Aquarium Co-op team!

Cory, thanks for making this video.Great info for newbies and seasoned aquarist...awhile ago I had saltwater reef tank and had a powerhead short out..well the fish were electrocuted....Very bad day, losing fish is like losing a friend(this may sound silly to some) but as for the corals, weirdly enough they were actually stimulated, grew and opened up like never before,I'm not crazy nor do I recommend anyone shock their tank but I think maybe someday studies will be done on electric current and the beneficial results...as for a great diatom filter,I use a filter sock and a powerhead, works great, same results using fiber fill in a hob filter

I lost a betta and almost another due to bad food. I didn’t realize what was happening right away. I only switched my other betta to new food as a last resort and it really helped! Also, food size is a big thing to watch out for too. My other tanks have dwarf gourami, and they are pigs. They out eat everything else in the tank. So I have to mix smaller food in so they don’t over eat and bloat up.

Good comments on 'heaters and health.' (1:40), and the contribuiton of sumerged pumps. When motors 'slowly' go bad, or their bearings 'go bad'... they INDEED generate heat as a result, so 'touching' one's 'mechanicals' to be 'familiar' with 'normal' of such heat output is a good direction (just as you wisely mentioned of 'knowing' the tenacity of 'bubble spread' at the surface, and general 'smell' of the tank). When it comes to 'heaters' I also always note the 'required' wattage 'max' I need, and then use TWO heaters that each are rated at 'half' the total required max. Why?... Because heaters fail! The 'mechanicals' can stick 'full on' and the 'solid state tend to fail: full off. With TWO filter a failure of BOTH at the same time is 'unlikely,' and the daily scan of the temp will tell if 'something' has failed. The tank will never 'go cold' or too hot when the heater eventually fails (they ALL DO eventually!).

When I open pellet or flake I put a month’s worth in a small container and vac seal the rest.(food saver). I feed mostly fresh but it’s a bit of messing around so some days they get dry. They seem to love it just as well.

Good comments on big bags of food going bad. I buy in bulk and then break it down into smaller bags that are VACUUM SEALED. It is a great compromise. Cheaper prices by bulk buying & it stays fresh.

The thing I would add that wasn’t mentioned nearly enough: DON’T PANIC!!!!! The over-corrections, or just plain wrong solutions always do more harm to the fish than the problem. Take your time, think it through, eliminate the simplest things FIRST. Serious things, serious illnesses take a lot of time to fix. So it’s important to take your time, do the right things, and not make things worse.

Been growing plants in sand or inert substrate for 2 years now, there's no issue with that, i can say that it's better against algae. Just use good fertiliser for the water column.

I think it was the freeze dried bloodworms that I was feeding that was causing mine to do that. I think the powdered up worms left a protein film on the top which caused the bubbles to keep their form. I stopped feeding that to my tank and within a few days or a week it cleared up. It might of been just a coincidence but hopefully it helps anyone out there with the same issues

@@esg808 Thanks, I've been feeding brine shrimp so wondered what could have caused my bubbles. Protein certainty explains it!

I am pretty sure I have a problem with stray current. I have been searching and searching to figure out why most of my fish are not eating and dying one by one without obvious reason. Everything looked fine, except the heater. That stopped working and after further inspection turned out to be cracked. So it is a great piece of information, I suggest people pay attention to this info. I have never imagined witnessing such a disaster with my tank. And stay away from these Aqueon Pro heaters “unbreakable and indestructible“ It is the second one that got cracked.

My two cents are... If you buy the biggest pack. Make sure u remove smaller amounts of it weekly into a smaller bottle/box and refrigerate or freeze the bigger pack. Food should last you at least 6 months... I've been in the hobby for over 10 years now n I've recently realized that it does the trick... Also planted tanks and froth, I've tried changing the water and my Ammonia is nil... But still I have froth, this is because of the protein film on my tank...I skim it out every other day

I've tried Rooibos tea with great results! I first introduced it with a slow drip to see what the reaction was in my smallest betta tank. My betta swam under the drip and bathed in it and played in that area as it dripped and looked like she really really liked it a lot! Now I standard brew a pot to add to all of my 3 planted tanks every week. I love that blackwater effect. I say yay!
