GAWR( Gross Axle Weight Rating) Front is the front axle load limit, it is not the weight of the front of the truck. It represents how much you can load the axel in total. Similarly there is is a Rear GAWR. lastly there is an overall GVWR Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. None of these numbers should be used to figure out curbside vehicle weight. Nor should you use these numbers to calculate the centre of gravity which allows you to figure out where to position the truck during a lift. Ideally this guy had a scale to do that which is great. Alternatively you can look it up in manufacturers specs.

this is wrong, an articulated scale is not used to measure solid one piece vehicles.....unless you place all 4 wheels on one section of the scale, you're partially weighing the same mass twice. The rear axle weight indicated on the scale will also carry some of the weight from the front of the truck. Your insurance policy and registration show vehicle weight. That information is from the title.

I don't get it. Looking up curb weight for my old, bare bones standard cab Dodge W250 got me weights from 3950 to 4500 lb, depending on the site. What the heck? Then I weighed it on a Highway Patrol truck scale and got 5100 lb. without me in it. Double what the heck? How can there be this much variation in curb weights?

Well you can split hairs if you want or depend on a safety factor to save your life but limitations are limitations. My lift is not a 10,000 pound lift with the arms extended and a 11,000 pound lift with them retracted it’s a 10,000 pound lift period. 2500 lbs max per arm.

On a two post lift, cables on the floor, should I see a little give on the poles as lm raising the vehicle. Probably 1/2 inche in ward, lift is in 6 inches of concrete! Or is the vehicle a little too heavy, 9,000lbs lift, probably 6000lbs Chevrolet Tahoe. Thanks in advance
@lt4324
3 жыл бұрын
And some additional info, if a lift is rated at 9,000lbs, it should exceed 1.5 times more than the advertised weight BUT this is for "ALI" American made approved lifts ONLY. This is still not a good idea to overload a lift just because of the overload ratings. As seen in this video, stick with correct weight specs for your vehicle.
@RedlineStands
3 жыл бұрын
So, some of this is correct. A lift being ALI certified does not mean it's American made. In fact, the majority of the ALI certified lifts on the market are imports, and yes, they must hold 1.5 times their rating in order to gain the certification. I actually have a whole video about ALI certification and it's pretty informative I think.

The standards for ALL lifts are rated at a weight BUT they must be able to support that weight PLUS 50% more. A 10,000 lb lift MUST support 15,000.

No sir. This is true of ALI certified lifts. Non-ALI certified lifts should be treated as such. Putting a 9,500 lb vehicle on a 9,000 lb non-ALI lift is asking to commit suicide. Now, should they all be overbuilt by 50%? Sure. Are they? No sir. I hope this helps.

its logical thinking. There are 4 posts. Each post has a weight limit. All 4 together will add to 1 limit. If your truck is EQUALLY balanced, then yes it would do it, but NOT all trucks are equally balanced. NOT all cars are equally balanced.

9k ALI lift must be able to lift and hold 1.5 time it’s weight with no deflection from the arms or beams.
@RedlineStands

Not true. An ALI certified lift must not exhibit permanent deformation once the weight is removed. In other words, the structure must return to its pre-loaded state and nothing be permanently bent. All lifts will experience deflection when loaded.

Heres how it works boys and girls. In your example the gvwr of this truck is 10000 lbs. The gvwr is the max permissible weight of the truck loaded. If this is a 3/4 ton truck then gvwr minus 1500 lbs equals the approx weigth of the vehicle. Hence this truck empty weighs approx 8500 lbs
@derekthomas9025

Well NADA dealer book lists this vehicle curb weight as 7040lbs.. that is with no extras as delivered with oils and whatnot. So I dont know where the extra 1500lbs is coming from.. maybe the cow catcher on the front.. and the toolbox in the bed most likely full of tools ect.. A quality 9k lift is fine for this vehicle as long as there are no serious extras.

There is a GVWR of 10K on the door sticker! Which is the max loaded weight of the truck. Subtracting 1500lbs for a 3/4 ton or 2000lbs for a 1 ton and you get a weight of 8500 or 8000lbs it’s not rocket science! No scale needed..

Seems legit. I've lifted an entire 18 wheeler with a standard two post rotary lift. Lined the mirrors up with the posts, kicked the arms underneath without looking and pushed the button and up she went. The whole works. 10% of the truck in front of the posts and the other 90% behind them. They didn't lean a bit.
