Some doctors have recently recommended taking antihistamines ( if one has allergies ) such as benedryl or Zyrtec before the shot to prevent a cytokeine reaction. Also Advil is being used before the shot to prevent heart inflammation and for a few days afterwards. Since this vid was made, more info has come out. Do you know if Advil helps prevent heart inflammation ?

@Friendly Neighborhood Immunologist, I'm wondering about how this plays into pregnant patients getting the vaccine. Obviously when you made this video, it was during a wave of the pandemic that did not seem to put pregnant women at higher risk than other adults in the same age demographic but that changed during the third wave. Pregnant women are now encouraged to get the vaccine to protect themselves and give antibodies to their unborn babies. But fever is to be avoided and dealt with promptly in pregnancy and it is not advised to let a fever go on without taking tylenol to lower it. Can you comment on this? Is a fever in the third trimester less dangerous than a fever in the 1st trimester when most of the development is taking place? Could you make an updated video regarding vaccination in pregnancy taking into consideration that there is now a great deal of data on it? Thank you! I would also be interested to know the answer to a question someone else asked below about antihistamines and other medications and whether they would also compromise the body's ability to produce antibodies.

Glad I could help. It should be fine for you to take Ibuprofen now. After the second dose you are protected from severe illness and hospitalization due to COVID. Right now most people on hospital ventilators for COVID are unvaccinated (95%) versus vaccinated people are 5% of those on ventilators.

Before means how many hours before we shouldn't take anti inflammatory drug my mother took Etoricoxib a day before the FIRST dose vaccination day (15 hours before to be more precise) she is using it from the past six days ..she took oxford astrazeneca vaccine here in India...dose the drug that she took before the vaccine supress the efficiency and effectiveness of first dose? Or its completely fine?????
@friendlyneighborhoodimmuno7192
3 жыл бұрын
The short answer is yes, your mother likely made less antibodies and activated T cells than someone who did not take Etoricoxib. Etoricoxib reduces the amount of COX-2 in the body which creates inflammation and fever. However, I would not worry just yet for several reasons. 1) If your mother is taking Etoricoxib for a chronic condition like arthritis this may have been the best choice, despite lower immune reaction to the vaccine. 2) Second, did your mom experience side effects like fatigue or aches? This is a good sign her immune system made antibodies anyway. 3) It was just the first dose, she will likely make much more antibodies after the second vaccine. Talk with her doctor about not taking Etoricoxib a day before her second dose. I would go with his decision. Hope your family stays well through all of the pandemic!

Wouldn’t Tylenol also interfere with immunity with infection by viruses? What about people who take Tylenol all the time every time they get sick or have a headache?
@friendlyneighborhoodimmuno7192

I haven’t seen any published papers examining this because there hasn’t been a controlled study. However, yes technically taking Tylenol a lot while you have a cold could diminish memory responses of your immune cells.

@friendlyneighborhoodimmuno7192
3 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. It seems like most doctors recommend spacing them out by at least two weeks. That way your immune system can work on making a response to each once separately.
I was told by my doctor it was fine, I took Aleve before both vaccines. I had a side effect with first shot even though I took the Aleve. The second shot my energy was drained out.
@friendlyneighborhoodimmuno7192
3 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you talked that over with your doctor. The immune system is unique for each person. It sounds like you experienced side effects which would indicate you were making an immune response and antibodies which is good. The CDC does recommend most people not pre-game Tylenol because a large immune response (i.e. fever, muscle aches, fatigue) is best for lots of antibody production. Sounds like you made the right choice for you. Glad you are vaccinated!

Taking any of the anti-inflammatories ahead of time is discouraged by the CDC. Taking aspirin afterwards might be okay, but if you actually got a blot clot then the aspirin could pose treatment issues to the medical doctors treating that person with a clot busting drug.

Good question. Aspirin is not a good choice after vaccination if you take the J&J vaccine. Taking Tylenol or Ibuprofen afterwards (24 hours) should be fine. The goal is to not suppress the immune system right when it encounters the vaccine.
