OK .. so some very prominent and well respected KZitem gardeners have been advocating for the use of alfalfa pellets or cubes in compost and as a side dress in the garden. You know who you are 😁 Now you know that I'm a big fan of growing nitrogen fixing plants .. I have Alder, Eleagnus, Redbud, Siberian Pea shrub, Black Locust and clover growing already to chop and compost at my convenience - the only real issue that I have with using those pellets is the cost: Here, it runs about $13.40 US for a 50lb bag, and once you use that, its gone. OK, make that two things: I REALLY like being able to produce my own amendments from renewable sources, and buying the pellets just leaves me holding the bag when its all over. Alright, make that three things: I wind up with a plastic bag that has to be disposed of every time I buy 50 lbs of pellets for $13.40
So, I'm jumping on the alfalfa bandwagon, but instead of advising that folks run out and put a hole in their wallets for a single use product and then find a landfill to take their empty bag, I'm buying a whole pound of alfalfa seed for half the price, planting a patch of alfalfa that I can cut over and over again for YEARS (longer if I occasionally let it reseed itself) Establishing a trap crop for pests, and the bag that that seed came in? Yep, its recyclable.
