I have a gateway (modem/router) from my ISP. I'm connecting a dual-band mesh system that also supports Wi-Fi 6 (TP-Link X20). I had a previous setup and gave it a new network name, although I noted that the old ISP-provided network was still working. Is it best to give a mesh network a new network name or use the same as the existing network name? Plugging a mesh network router into a gateway, are there other connections to and from the gateway to consider, since it is more than just a modem?

Thanks for the explanation. I wonder how the tp-link XE75 (6E tri-band mesh for $300) might change the equation? It’s close to dual-band prices and you can set it up with a 6GHz backhaul or use the 6GHz as a regular band if you have 6E devices.

As rudimentary as the drawing was, it was helpful, thank you. I'm also looking at the XE75 but I would rather hardwire a backhaul with cat6 or MOCA so maybe I don't need the XE75. It's just I want to add 2.4 wifi cameras without flooding my router.

I can get TP Link M9 Plus which is a Tri band system with WiFi 5 and TP Link X60 which is a dual band system with WiFi 6 at almost the same price. My home is a single floor apartment around 1600 sqft. And single brick concrete walls. Which one should I get?

@@SmartHomeButler Thanks for the reply, I also have a question in regards to security. Should I have my cameras and smart home appliances be on a separate wifi network, like on a "guest" wifi, while other things like computers and smartphones on my regular wifi network. Does that make a difference? People have told me its more secure that way
@SmartHomeButler
3 жыл бұрын
It is more secure that way but the guest network will cause some issues with devices connecting to one another because of how a guest network is designed. You aren’t supposed to be able to communicate with other devices in a guest network so a lot of automations won’t work that way.

Hey, good simplified explanation here ... However, I think it bears mentioning that if a mesh system allows for ethernet cable backhaul of the satellite(s) to the main router node. Then a dual band mesh system can achieve the full 900+ mb/s limit that fiber internet connections typically supply.
@SmartHomeButler
Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately most of the mesh network systems do not allow for more than one ethernet connection. At the time of this video I had tried several brands and most ofd them had performance issues when connecting more than one ethernetr. Maybe in the years since the video this has been addressed.

Hi, what about if you use 3x wifi mesh but all connected with a cable. do you still have the same problem that the devices use their 5.0 ghz for being connected each other and so you will have less connection? if so, what about mesh routers instead? they cant connect each other wirelessly, but only with cable. edit: so this problem can be resolved by ethernet backhaul ? can please someone give me some advice :)

Wait a minute. Why does the speed only get cut in 1/2 with a dual band if it's over 450mbps? I have about 200 mbps in my home. Wouldn't that be cut in half to 100 mbps if I use a dual band mesh network? Why do you say that 450 mbps is the magical cut off point for speed reduction? That doesn't make any sense. The speed should be cut in half regardless.

"if you have internet speeds..." that is irrelevant. heres why: you can store your data on a NAS. watch 4k videos from that NAS and if your internet speed is slow but your network is fast, you'll be good. if you have a fast network you can use that NAS for game storage too. video editing high bitrate footage without having to copy it to your laptop SSD. just syncing your devices needs transfer speed that has nothing to do with the internet
