Learning in person is nice I agree I always preferred in person classes. When it comes to work though I can’t say I enjoy driving 30min to the office and 30min plus back during the peek of traffic. A more personal extreme case for me is being a single parent who has to get kids on and off the bus and so on. The home office makes my life easier. With that being said I do go into the office multiple days a week lucky my manager is very understanding with my schedule.

I agree with this rant. What is the point of uni if you don't show up? Sure, you get a nice curriculum and a fancy piece of paper, but you can find out everything on the internet and learn just as well if you are staring at a computer screen. The human interaction is the most valuable part in my personal opinion.

As a full time home office worker, I do like to live in a small village while working together with team members 300 kms away, and sometimes internationally. It takes effort, and professional courtesy, but it can be effective. I get the job done, and communicate effectively. My real office (I still have a dedicated room in a building, where I could always go back at a whim) is 50 km away, and I just love to think of all the gas that was spared by not having to make the roundtrip every day by car and also wasting 2 hours of my day on the road, not to speak of the dangers of the traffic. Could I move closer? Sure. But I like my home, trees outside my window, birds chirping. All I could afford in the big town is a hole in the concrete wall. No thanks.

And sure, it has to do with the personality. I sometimes say that I would do equally well on an uninhabited island, alone, so that's okay, I can see that it's not for everyone.

Yes, that makes a lot of sense and I envy you for it! Beautiful ❤️ I can't move away from the city because of my kids sport. But even within the city, people here confine themselves to their homes, when their offices are not super far (like 10 km or so) and actually nice, and the colleagues were cool. If I go to the home office for good reasons, it's really cool, but I don't want to be in the home office for complacency only, especially when there are communication issues and it is not far for me. At that point, I try seeing it as a workout to get there and as a social thing to be there. Not all the time, but in general, I will always force myself a little to do such things to not get rusty and tired...

First of all, cool channel. I think you're absolutely right on a lot of fronts. Especially on any online platform where nuance is thrown out of the fucking window. You covered quite a lot which I cannot succinctly respond to adequately through text, so I'll add that as an educator, what you mentioned about online schoolwork is spot on. Part of my work is teaching and I really couldn't imagine teaching something like Real Analysis over Zoom/Teams. As an introvert, I deeply understand certain peoples wants/need to be alone or work alone, but I also think it's used too conveniently as a cover for "not wanting to do anything". Additionally, a lot of my "aha!" moments came from working collaboratively with other mathematicians is a room decked out with blackboards. My current university has a room specifically for math students to do exactly that and it's used well. Someone also pointed out at the quality of certain online instructors. Sure, I agree, but I also think that part of learning is not always liking the professor. In my case, it gave me motivation to study harder, to learn something on my own, or collaborate with other students. Btw. Coffee is the superior option.

Thank you! Yes, well said ❤️☕ I mean, what is the point in being anti social anyway? I am struggling with this myself but I always saw it as the more mature and sustainable choice to fight against my anxiety and get out there. I don't regret it, even though to this day I am not comfortable with 99% of human contact. But it certainly made me a better human to do this. And I also find an unchallenged life extremely boring. No one who intends to be even slightly intellectual can thrive home alone. That's a TikTok myth. I'm not always nuanced myself in every single video. But I find it super important that people don't expect I am also not nuanced in my head or as a person, so to say... And I don't automatically dislike someone's whole channel if I disagree on a few accounts. I disagree with friends and colleagues all the time. That's life. I just wish I could motivate my opinion with some papers. But I don't have the time rn... ☕☕☕

For me, I engage in the organisation's mission and purpose, I care very little for office politics, so working from home is wonderful. I've done the whole blue-chip-climb-the-career-ladder thing, and to be honest it bores me. I want quality of life and flexibility. Now, I will only ever apply for roles whereby I can work from home. That being said I don't mind monthly in-person meet-ups, as I do think that it is healthy to press-the-flesh and socialise with the team.

Thinking about the other comment on another video, I appreciate what you say in the introductory part. Some people think there's no in-between regarding opinions and experiences. About the online class thingy: I think you missed the option to have organised FAQs for distance learning, which can help a lot and save time for teachers and students. There were a lot of teachers at my university who would often repeat the same things over and over, just because someone was late or didn't pay attention. But there was a point in time when they just created documents with FAQs, which can be dealt with quickly, just to have more time for the students who have read all the stuff in preparation. That's why I'm appreciative of teachers offering documentations of FAQs. I spent hours just hearing questions which were answered multiple times, only to think some classes are just a waste of time. But then some teachers created documents for students to read in advance, just to give more of a deep dive into what the class is actually about. Man, I love your vibe. The way you phrase things is delightful. 😄 Since we had the little conversation on the other video, I just wanted to take this opportunity to tell you to take it easy. Don't record something three times just because someone else might be offended. Do it because you yourself want it to be some way. As long as it's in line with how much energy you want to put into it. There, as I think you also said in your comment, will always be someone who feels offended. Definitely agree with you on the in-person stuff. Being like "Oh, one day audio will be soooo good" etc. sound so dystopian to me, honestly. 🥴 Edit: Looking at the comments, I just want to thank you for the effort you put into creating these videos. 🙆🏼♂

I am eager to read a paper on self dg accuracy actually (one that is not biased, not driven by "it's the patriarchy's fault", published in a reputable journal and not uploaded as a preprint on ReseachGate...) And I will fully accept their self-diagnosis after a proper medical education lol XD As someone who properly diagnosed multiple non-mental disorders in myself and others, I completely get the feeling of going to the MD and just being told what I already know. But I won't share that like it's my Evangelism...

When I was on my last year of Uni, we were all forced to go into online-only classes because of the pandemic. Most of people also left the dorm I was in, they wanted to go to their home cities and countries. I hated it. I also have never experienced actual office space, but even I can tell the downsides of working only from home: lack of excercise (I gained a LOT of weight), the whole social interaction between coworkers was a bit weird, and in general it felt like a drag sometimes, because I felt like I was confined in the walls of my home, while having no separation between work and that same home. When I was studying for masters, half of my lessons were online (by choice of the most people, because they didn't want to attend the uni), and there were days when I was pretty much sitting in front of my PC from 8am until 9pm, which is just extremely draining mentally. There were times after school/uni, when I was just walking home alone or with my friends, and I/we could take a detour on the way home, have a conversation, maybe go somewhere, that would take some extra time, but it felt extremely relieving and just good. You just don't get that with home office. BUT the benefits of home office are awesome, too. I like some home comforts, especially when the weather outside is not being nice (icy roads, heavy rains, fast winds, the weather that has warnings, basically), or when I feel slightly sick. Sometimes I didn't have much to do at work and so I was just waiting for call until I was doing my stuff. Obviously, there are a lot more benefits, but those are mine personally. I am looking for a job right now, and a job which that can have an option for both is a priority. It's just good to know that you can just stay at home when you need it, but nothing more than that. Being asocial and not meeting many people face to face changed all of us for the worse.

This was an interesting video, I agree that in person events are better and you will indeed get more questions from the attendees for courses etc I agree, the office is certainly a social environment. That said, my wife and I have been working from our home office since COVID began. Sadly my wife has an autoimmune condition and has been diagnosed as clinically extremely vulnerable (CEV). Basically, despite being fully vaccinated, she will be unlikely to survive if she contracts COVID. With the UK having removed the requirement to wear a mask and social distancing has been abolished, in order to keep safe we can no longer work in an office with others. We also can't go to any social events where there are other people. We aren’t introverts but we have to manage without other human interactions, like the work office or even a coffee shop. It does feel like something is missing but hey, the travel time when working from home is pretty fantastic :)

I've met all sorts of them, like 50/50. Every generation I had as students in whatever capacity from uni students to tutoring, my observation so far was that they get less and less and less independent from one generation to the next. They ask fewer questions than they would 10 years ago and my teaching style has not changed that much, but I go with the time tech wise etc. However just overall students become more passive it seems. I do not know why that is. Maybe it's the age of introverts. But the "show me how to" has become a " do it for me" in some places, when it was a "let me figure it out" once...

An advantage of an online course though (just to state the obvious) is that you can have the best of the best teachers (if only we had courses from the great minds of old times, let's say Archimedes, or idk Einstein), but you have to make do with the possibly mediocre ones live.

@@UndineAlmaniThat's true, e.g. when I sometimes think back of my high school teachers, (more than 25 years ago, how time flies) I usually think of their characteristic personalities, and not their subject material at all. The way they spoke, and joke, and were angry or just regular people with the weight of life on their shoulders, these things do get built into the students (if they are the sensitive ones to these kind of things, like I was, but then again, they told me that I should be made into a gold statue because I told them that I like all of them). I agree, that I'd miss that through a screen 100%.

I do remote because most of the employers in my city underpay for my skillset. Remote work gives me access to out-of-state firms that just pay a lot more. TBH, I'm not big on "modern" open offices with no privacy whatsoever. For college, I"m grateful that was 100% in-person.

Love your work. But you lost me here. Your employer requires you to go to an office. Using COVID as an excuse to evade going to the office is unacceptable. Work from home was a COVID initiative, that you find it offensive is misdirected negativity!!!!
