The guy was manipulated his entire life, he still saved all the kingdoms while being one of the few warriors who could go head to head with Onaga at that moment, but you think he's a horrible protagonist Lol. You need to review your concepts of what a good protagonist is then.

You actually left out his most interesting trait - that he's arrogant and people can manipulate him by playing to his ego. But Onaga's basically the only one to do that, and even then rarely. While Shujinko's neat on a conceptual level, the quality of a character isn't in what their concept is. It's in the execution. In the actual story Shujinko's an empty shell that mostly just does what other people tell him to do. He doesn't really have principles, rarely objects to anything, and when he does object it amounts to a line or two before agreeing to do whatever. He's on what he believes is a quest to save the world but Darrius tells him to sit quietly in a jail cell to await trial for a nonsense crime and he not only agrees, he stays there for decades without resisting. When some one tries to break him out it takes about three lines to switch off his pacifist mode and get him to fight Darrius. He glides near frictionlessly through the story when he shouldn't.

@commiekin Oh, they're right. But compared to Taven he is a better developed and tragic character, but I don't think both will ever return to playable form (Mk1 doesn't count, because that game "Deception" much). One question I also have is which is your favorite mk? These games from the PlayStation 2 era are pretty boring in my opinion.

@@haruzito-8922I haven't played MK11 or MK1 yet, so I guess a tossup between MKX and MK9.

Commiekin is right. Shujinko is a fantastic concept (warrior who can learn nearly anyone's styles manipulated into helping the bad guys) but he's so gullible I found it frustrating listening to him just go along with everything he'd say. It's a shame cos I do think a character who starts off wanting to save the world but then spends his entire life tricked into helping the villains is a tragedy on levels of Shakespearean drama, but he was so badly written in Konquest you spend more time thinking how easily he falls for everything

MK writing and story execution has been bad for a long time. It was OK in the classic era, basically because they didn’t do much or need to do much; and then as soon as it tried anything more it floundered badly with MK4. It's arguably barely up to snuff even now other than character dialogue. Of course they were going to mess up a character as experimental and conceptually unique as Shujinko.
