One of the most expressive and fun interpretations of DK in games. The hype this game elicits from actually beating on those bongos was great. I probably wouldn't think much of it as more than a gimmick not worth playing if I hadn't already played the game when I was younger. The bosses were the highlights for sure, surprised you didn't show footage of sumo kong and the big purple kong, the situational clap action commands you could do to counter him mid attack was more varied than expected.

I've played this game way more times than I'd like to admit. Its fantastic and its no wonder nintendo let the team that made this work on Mario Galaxy. I think the emphasis on beat em up combat (in addition to the nature of the controller) is why so many Donkey Kong Country fans could never get into Jungle Beat. To them, DK himself getting justice to his big and powerful nature was nice, but the type of aesthetics, kinetic energy, and precise platforming that so define the DKC trilogy wasn't there and thus not of much interest. What various Sonic fans felt abut the Werehog in Sonic Unleashed is how many of them would often view this title. Throw in the lack of any other DK characters, enemies, or settings and I suspect many were inclined to view it as a silly spin-off game from an era they weren't terribly fond of to begin with.
@misterzygarde6431

If Donkey Kong got a redesigned move-set in Smash. I could see the specials be based around the DKC games and the standard attacks be based around Jungle Beat. Also I would unironically love to see a sequel to this only to see how they could top things.
@321cheeseman
3 жыл бұрын
Just fix the few issues with the game in a sequel and you could easily top things. The most pressing fixes I think are: 1. Doing a much better job of conveying that it's a score attack game. Tons of people believe Jungle Beat is trash because they thought it would be a standard platformer like DKC and played it that way, and the game does virtually nothing to try and course correct. 2. Having more than a tiny handful of bosses and not making me fight them all 4 times each, usually with no meaningful changes.
@Aid1043
3 жыл бұрын
You know what would be funny? If the team working on Smash insisted on using a 21-year-old moveset for Donkey Kong, and just ignored all of the possibilities of later games (like Jungle Beat) and make all of his moves generic "strong ape" things with just enough DK to try to justify his moves (like his dash attack roll), and then remove perhaps the most flavorful move that he ever had (his Brawl final smash, which was a direct reference to Jungle Beat), all despite the fact that they have had many chances to update his moveset - considering, also, that it takes all of thirty seconds to think of a single, more DK-esque ideaa (for example, what if his recovery was a cannon), it's that easy, you can't seriously expect me to believe that there's nothing to pull from - and never actually made a non-antiquated kit for a smash veteran? Yeah, that would be funny.
@321cheeseman
3 жыл бұрын
@@Aid1043 That sort of thing is a problem for most of the veteran characters. None of them are ever so significantly overhauled that their movesets reflect the content of their games as well as the new characters' movesets do theirs. Like, Mega Man is allowed to be a weird projectile focused character with basically every single attack being lifted directly from his source material, while Samus is a generic melee fighter using mostly totally made up moves, and with only three projectile attacks (way less than some newer characters not even strongly associated with projectiles, like Villager) and they're all special attacks only.

There is absolutely something wrong with your bongos. The constant clapping from DK shown in your footage is NOT supposed to happen. This is no joke my favorite modern platformer. The skill floor is fairly low, while the skill ceiling is insanely high. I often go back to try to beat my old scores and optimizing my play manages to be just the right mix of physical and mental gymnastics. In terms of game feel, it's nothing short of genius. The only other time punching felt this satisfying was Wii Sports boxing. Visually it looks pretty good with solid art direction (hair and fur textures haven't aged too well though). I always liked how an enlarged view of DK was on the bottom left of the screen to really show off the beautiful animations.

I think Retro Studios also realized that Donkey Kong Jungle Beat kinda matched the personality of Donkey Kong more than the original DKC, and took inspiration from this for a lot of the additions to the gameplay in Returns and Tropical Freeze. Like DK slamming the ground to uproot objects and enemies, yanking huge objects out of the ground, platforms straining and collapsing under the weight of DK's jumps, and of course how you pummel the crap out of bosses when you land the final blow.
