Want to see what a nice, soft, willing donkey looks like? This video gives you the perfect example.
You're watching an incredibly intelligent animal. When it comes to paying attention to details and getting things done, donkeys are far superior to the horse and even the mule. They are just awesome!
Now, let's get into what you're ACTUALLY seeing happen in this video sent to us from someone Steve has been training over the phone and email. (It is important to note that Steve has not trained this animal... this is the owner... with coaching tips from Steve).
This is foundation training - getting the donkey soft in the neck. Notice the surcingle and the breaching being used together. The breaching keeps the surcingle from going forward.
When starting off a donkey, this is a great way, even for a donkey that has had no training. With this approach, the donkey starts to understand how to use the breaching and how to use the surcingle... the communication.
Now, let's move on... notice the rope halter - this is very important. The rope halter is adjusted down upon the nose and the donkey is quiet. You can literally see the donkey understand the communication of the rope halter.
Other things to notice... the ears are moving around, the tail is hanging quiet - he is comfortable. He understands what he is supposed to do because everything is communicating to the nose.
What you are seeing in this video is the exact some concept and experience that we create with the Mule Rider's Martingale.
SO HOW SHOULD I TRAIN?
Do not over train... what you're seeing is perfect. What we want to do is move the donkey around, three passes by the gate to the right, framed up correctly with the nose on the vertical.
Once the donkey does three times correctly passing the gate to the right, we turn him around and have him pass the gate three times on the left.
Then quit.
What you're seeing is good foundation building.
DO NOT OVER TRAIN.
A couple days later, come out and do the same three to the right, three to the left. Once you have that - then add three more to the right and three more to the left.
Several days later, come out and do the first six, add three more for a total of 9... quit... then move to 12.
Once we can get them to do 12 total correct passes by the gate we can move on to other techniques.
I don't drive them with long lines because it's too much pressure - we have too much leverage and pull on the donkey.
We go from the rope halter to Mule Rider's Martingale to the Trail Rider bit.
We are properly framing them up.
