What makes this screen-test so unique is that Jerry Lewis apparently wasn't looking for a kid who could merely memorize lines (as most child actors simply do), but an actress who could react to off-script remarks without losing her cool, or crying, etc. This screen-test reminds me of one of the scenes in the film where Lewis, as Uncle Julius the photographer, is force-spoon-feeding her cereal, believing her to be a model, and Donna is trying to speak, but cannot, frustrated, until she yells "Uncle Julius! I'm your niece!" while her dress and chin is covered in milk and cereal.
Jerry was testing Donna to see how she would naturally react to being frustrated, and I'm sure since Lewis was a comedian, who knows how much of the film had improv, he needed to know what the kid could take... in a fun, teasing manner. Donna is amazing, and The Family Jewels is one of my favorite kids movie.
