Hey Steve, just checking out your review one the Donner (means thunder in German). I have a similar Donner concert which you've seen me play. The only difference is my version is the plug in with the built in tuner and the carved edge area on the body where your strumming arm rests. Definitely agree with you on the nice sound. It's loud with good tone and sustain. I like the bridge too. Very easy to change strings. I use my Donner as my low-G uke and tend to favor playing it about 50% of the time between my other two uke's. Never had any issues with tuning, action or buzzing. Always used Aquila strings. It's just an all around good ukulele for the price I paid for it online back in 2017 for a little over $65 and it came with all the same goodies. I've seen it for sale online for around $75 today , but still a good deal for the electronic plug-in version of this model. Like you said, it's a crowded field out there when it comes to entry level ukes. I could easily afford a $250 uke, but the three I play just look and sound good even after almost 3 years. And, they are all were well under $100. I guess I have yet to develop the over $100 uke ear yet. 😃 I can tell when a uke sounds bad, but can't tell in any reviews of more expensive ukuleles if they sound any better than the less expensive ones. 🤔

This is such a nice looking instrument. I'd been trying to decide between the concert and tenor; I came across a really great deal Donner has right now: $77 for both the DUC-1 tenor and 3 string mini guitar.

@@stevesstrings5243 How does the sound of this one compare to Donner's tenor? They are made of the same material, so despite the extra spacing between the frets, is the sound really that much different?

Thank you for the review. Aklot vs Donner: which one is good for the beginner?
@stevesstrings5243
4 жыл бұрын
Either would be a great choice. I have both and think they are both great. They are very close in price so that is not a key distinction. The Aklot has a solid mahogany top, which gives it a nice warm tone. Although the Donner has a laminate top, the one that have has a nice shimmer to it. To my ear, I prefer the Aklot, but I'm sure others would prefer the Donner. I suggest you listen to my Reviews of them both back to back and see which one sounds better to you. Let my know what you decide. Good luck!

@@stevesstrings5243 thank you for the reply. In the spec I see that Donner nut width is 38mm and a wider neck compared to Aklot. Is there any significant difference ? How's the distance between 1st string and 4th string on both models? Is there any plan to do a video on Aklot vs Donner comparison?
@stevesstrings5243

The string spacing seems pretty standard. I find them both to be equally playable. That said, I prefer tenor scale ukuleles. Thanks for the comparison suggestion!

How much mm is the action? I'm wondering because I want decently low action as a beginner so it's a little easier and I haven't built calluses yet. Also is it fairly easy to push down the first fret? I own a cheap soprano right now and it hurts to push down the first fret more than any other fret (which is why i also want a concert and lower action because I'm thinking it'll be greater than what I have now) so just out of your opinion if it doesn't need as much effort into pushing it down than other frets (unless it'll get better over time if i keep playing which of course I'll do) but yeah this is all I'm curious about. Thank you for the detailed review it's very helpful btw
@stevesstrings5243

The string action is 2.75mm at the 12th fret. Action at the first fret good and even bar chords are no problem at the first fret.

Hey Steve... Very helpful and educational review. I am debating between a Donner Concert and a Hola Concert ukulele (both are priced nearly the same). Your reviews on both ukes are very favorable. Is there any significant advantage of one over the other? Thank you

@@figityfuktup That’s one approach. There are several good teachers on KZitem. I also got with a local ukulele group and played with them. They are typically very supportive groups and va motivate you to play. I started with the Austin Ukulele Society and Tuesday Ukes. For a raw beginner, some lessons in person would also be a good idea. Check out Mechanics of Music. They are on KZitem and also have virtual classes.

What new/replacement strings would you recomend for this instrument?
@stevesstrings5243
3 жыл бұрын
I like Aquila strings but lots of other folks like fluorocarbon strings such as those made by Martin, D'Addario, or Freemont. Personally, I think the D'Addario stings feel slippery. That is I don't get as much traction. Since I'm a thumb strummer and use the fleshy part or my thumb, I prefer the more positive contact o the Aquilas. Fortunately, strings are not very expensive so you can experiment until you find what you like for a particular instrument. I don't recommend Aquila Reds. The ones I bought broke the A string the first day. Let me know what you decide upon and how they turn out.
