There's a place for the aftermarket knock-offs for sure, just as there's a place for other inexpensive tools like those from Harbor Freight or Princess Auto. They're a critical part of the tool ecosystem. They enable people with tight or minimal budgets to get things done, they allow people access to various trades that they otherwise would not have access to, and they allow hobbyists to ease into things without breaking the bank. There's nothing wrong with them... so long as they're not misrepresented as the real deal!

Right on Colvin… that ID tag on the Husqvarna saw’s the critical point of inspection on a used saw… if it’s clipped from the OEM the company has “replaced under the warranty”… so that would raise an issue or it should… or if it’s completely missing and it’s never seen a rivet it’s an aftermarket case… it could possibly have everything else switched over but you really need to do a complete parts inventory to really access it’s actually value. Cranks and coils and carburetor’s and clutch’s are a collection of 4-5 hundred dollars worth of parts new from Husqvarna where they aren’t $200 in the aftermarket parts…. I’m one of those fortunate people who buy a couple of the “cheap” aftermarket parts and test them then put them in my inventory. They have allowed me to keep my operating expense down and to “fix” several broken saw’s that were put out to pasture because the repair expense outweighed their value… I absolutely hate to see things just tossed out or into the junk pile. So the one advantage to the cheaper aftermarket parts has been the saving of many old broken saw’s! The cheap parts and the kits on the models that are out of patent protection has also caused a huge hobby to blossom where guy’s are repairing old saw’s and building the kits as a hobby. It hasn’t hurt the sales of the majors…if anything it’s bolstered saw’s! These and entire group of guys today that buy saw’s just because they want one… 20 years ago that wasn’t “practical”.. an entire “hobby” has blossomed out of the power saw world! And it’s fantastic! There’s guy’s like me that have considered planning a trip just to spend a little time in my “Mecha!”… Walker’s Saw Shop… thick of all the faller’s that Donny and his pop has outfitted with a great saw over these past years! I’d slide down the gully out back to retrieve a clutch so I could make it a necklace or something!!! With the Introduction by Billy Ray it’s been a great history lesson! I could listen to Donny’s dad telling stories or talking saw’s until the cows come home… he’s an absolute vault of knowledge!

Donny Walker, good catch and in sharing what to watch out for! I can’t believe they actually used a Husky sticker! I was taught years ago that china has magical copy machines, you simply load it with scrap materials, put the authentic item on the scanner and it makes copies with junk material at a crazy rate with a huge margin for the Chinese government.

Evening to Donny.I got brave and built one.It was quite an adventure. I used Husqvarna case bearings and the e clips I got from you. You are correct about the aforementioned aftermarket carburetors, they can be rather poorly made.So far so good,up date ya later.

Probably is missing the little O-ring that goes on the crank underneath of the oil pump metal spacer sleeve… some people don’t think they need those but I’m pretty sure that’s where the “bad carburetor” thinking comes from… don’t hold a tune because no carburetor could hold a tune with that tiny air leak… pressure test it with the soapy water and find all it’s air leak’s! I wish I had a couple of those “real” carb’s I could put some kits into! LMFFAO! I usually put a good kit into a cheap carburetor and it’s working out good! It’s not cool to scam someone

Yeah… that cylinder probably isn’t that bad… but they have some junk piston rings and I’m not a huge fan of the piston’s either… a meteor piston with Caber rings in a cheap cylinder can run a long time… I’ve done a couple work saw’s that way and they been running a decade with that setup. I radius them with a little round diamond ball burr to help them out…break the top and bottom edges of the piston to get as much oil to those cylinder walls as I can… it’s too bad that the rubber bits like intake boots and fuel lines don’t last very long… that’s are the little things that in a few years all just need to be totally replaced.

These knock off's are the best thing that ever happened to the saw industry. I've had loads of them now and there's very little to complain about really, sure there's a few components that don't last as well as the OEM saws, but they can be changed for the genuine articles. The thing is that these are old models now and you can't buy a new genuine saw anymore, if you want a pre EPA saw then a copy is the way to go. The engine itself seems to last just as well as the originals! and there's nothing in the performance at all, in fact some of the 372xp copies I've run actually seem to outcut the OEM saws. I think the muffler is probably the reason for this as it has fewer restrictions and a larger port. After hearing the stories about the newer saws and the problems they suffer I don't think I'll ever buy a new OEM saw again, financially it just doesn't make any sense. I can have four or five copies for the price of one genuine saw! So even if one or two break beyond repair in the lifetime of the original saw, I'd still have a couple of working copies and a load of spares!

get a load of you. These are the best saws to happen to the industry? get out of here. Go buy your chinese junk and play in your moms basement with it. Anybody trying to earn money with a saw has ZERO use for these pieces of junk.

Hi Donny, I’ve just bought a second hand 372xp, now I’ve got it home and had a closer look, it started off genuine but has non genuine crank cases, cylinder/piston, & carb, not happy at all, it starts and runs great but have little confidence in it’s longevity, have you got any experience of these non genuine replacements parts on an original saw? Thanks

Good advice. I am wanting a Stihl MS880 or 881 for occasional use, will use smaller saws for 98% 0f my work. Do you recommend a new Stihl, Chinese, or a used 880 or 881?

My opinion find a decent used one. They are extremely expensive new and even if the used one needs a lil tlc you'll still b money ahead. The china saws are like playing poker. Sometimes ya win but oddd are....

Even with real husky’s and Stihl you can get surprised if buying them used... had for example one with aftermarket piston in it!... and the Problem is oem replacements are often as expensive as the entire saw is worth 🤦♂️😂
