Wouldn't be a Mountain Jam without it, thanks Donovan.

The chorus of this song: "First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is," may sound incomprehensible or silly, but the lines are a Zen saying Donovan borrowed and which have a meaning. The lines are intended to succinctly describe three stages of Zen. Pre-enlightenment, one's aware of the Universe as physical (there is a mountain). Then through meditation one may experience a visionary state where the physical Universe seems to disappear (no mountain) where the "Buddha Mind"/Tao [Zen first developed in China as a blend of Indian Buddhism & Chinese Taoism] root of reality behind physical appearances is experienced as non-physical. After that vision, the mountain reappears, except in ones new enlightened state one is simultaneously aware of the physical mountain & the Void/Tao non-physical reality behind it & at its root... And now you know the rest of the story!

I saw him live many years ago and he described the search for enlightenment as being like a man travelling to a mountain. When he starts his journey he can see his goal clearly ("first there is a mountain"), but along the way he travels into a valley (or a forest) and when he looks he cannot see his destination, but that doesn't alter the fact that the destination is still there ("then there is no mountain"), and finally he reaches his destination ("then there is")

Probably played this for his parents as they were paying thru the nose for his college. They rolled their eyes and told him to lay off the weed. Then they're hearing it in the car on the way to the supermarket. Then he quits studies and goes on tour, comes back and pays off their house. I was 8 and never turned my radio off when this came out. I didn't know what i was listening to but it sure got my toes tapping. Thanks for posting this and yes they should be dancing.

"There Is a Mountain" is a song and single by British singer/songwriter Donovan,[1] released in 1967. It charted in the USA (Billboard: No.11) and UK (No.8). Featured musicians are Donovan (vocals and acoustic guitar), Tony Carr on percussion, Harold McNair on flute and arrangement and Danny Thompson on bass. Chart positions: # 11 (USA Billboard), # 9 (USA Cashbox), # 11 (USA Record World), # 8 (UK) The Allman Brothers Band's "Mountain Jam" (from Eat a Peach, 1972) is a long, improvised jam song based on this song. The Allman Brothers were inspired to improvise on "There is a Mountain" after hearing the Grateful Dead jam on the song's main riff. The Dead can be heard quoting a few bars of "There Is a Mountain" in their song "Alligator," from the Dead's Anthem of the Sun album, released in 1968. An example of the Dead jamming live on the "There Is a Mountain" riff can be heard at the 4:53 mark on the version of "Alligator" they performed at their Aug. 21, 1968 show at the Fillmore West. The song was also covered by Dandy Livingstone on his album Rocksteady with Dandy (1967, Giant) The lyrics refer to a Buddhist saying originally formulated by Qingyuan Weixin, later translated by D.T. Suzuki in his Essays in Zen Buddhism, one of the first books to popularize Buddhism in Europe and the US. Qingyuan writes Before I had studied Chan (Zen) for thirty years, I saw mountains as mountains, and rivers as rivers. When I arrived at a more intimate knowledge, I came to the point where I saw that mountains are not mountains, and rivers are not rivers. But now that I have got its very substance I am at rest. For it's just that I see mountains once again as mountains, and rivers once again as rivers. Kenny Loggins covered the tune in 2009 with his youngest daughter Hana on his album All Join In.................Eddie

Would be almost the most insane version...except he omitted the best verse! "Ohh Juanita....Ohh Juanita...I call your name. For, the snow will be a blinding sight to see, as it lies 'om yonder hillside." That is the most insane songwriting. When you're on LSD, you can make a mountain disappear, just by closing your eyes. The mountain reappears when you open your eyes. Same thing happens when you're not high, but it doesn't seem profound, and you probably won't write a song about it.
