I have not used my Rockler router table to its potential. This was great info. My wife is an engineer and she bought me the top of the line Bosch router and I am slowly using it to its potential.

performing this exact procedure at this moment; 1/4 bit dictates lesser cuts - .025", .030". wood is tsalam 25mm (hard wood dark). Now for fun of cutting half-lap jointery to reach width of @30", 50" long. Table seats 6; 8 with sqeeze

Great video and excellent production. I also don’t have a jointer (I’m a backyard woodworker) and for a while was using a homemade jig to joint long boards but the results were way less than perfect. I changed my method recently to something similar to this, though I don’t have a router table, but I bought a cheap 8 foot length of s4s from a big box store and clamp that to my work piece and use a template bit to “joint” one edge. It’s been working perfectly for me for the last year or so.

Thank you, Michael! The template bit method is fantastic too. You can also use the straight piece of lumber as a guide for your circular saw to help you make straight cuts when breaking down sheets of plywood!

Thank you, Joe! There’s no doubt that a jointer would be easier...but I don’t have one in my apartment shop. Hoping others find this tip helpful!

Been doing this on my benchtop router table with a 1/4" spiral bit. I could definitely use a stouter bit such as that!

Highly encourage getting a thicker bit and it doesn't run the chance of deflecting as much

Put the 2 boards next to each other, clamp them down, and run a circular handsaw or a jigsaw down the seam marginally straight.

After you put your shims, don’t you want the big flush with the left side? It looked confusing to me when you repositioned the fence across left and right against your bit.

What if you have no flat sides to begin with to reference on the router surface? I have some 1" x 1" x 12" rough ebony stock that I've tried this technique on without acceptable results. I don't have a planer to use your melamine hot glue technique on to get at least one flat surface. Perhaps this issue leads to a second question - can you get at least one flat surface without a planer? Great video by the way.

There are surfacing router bits. People use them with a router in a sled. You can probably find some examples with searching.

You likely do not have the fences aligned with the router but properly. It’s the same setup concept as a typical jointer

I have a question about edge jointing. I have my router table set up so i can take off about a 1/8 of an inch, but some of the boards don't fit flush some of them are still high in the middle and one has a small gap on the end. Do I keep running them through the router untll they are square like you would with a planner. ?
@SpencleyDesignCo

That’s most likely caused by the bit being just slightly out of alignment with your fences

I really like you and your channel. But I have to say your tool selection is very bad. You have a festool domino (1100$) and other festool tools with no joiner and if I’m not mistaking no planer. Festool is some of the best, but it’s extremely overpriced for a person that’s mid stream. These are the tools we use most. Doing an edge this way is great. But what about the bottom? For around 325$ you can get a cheap joiner that works. That’s what I have until I can afford a good one. You could of bought a planer and a joiner for the 1100$ you spent on the domino. Sell that thing and use the money to buy both. You are a creative guy, I think you will do well soon. But don’t think we look for the guy with the coolest tools. I look for the videos that give me knowledge, inspiration, and ideas for what it’s worth. Good luck to you.
