The black people who don’t understand why she lied don’t understand racism white supremacy…… anyone who’s informed , knew what she was trying to do ….. I don’t engage with people who tell me she didn’t like being black because if they understood racism - they would come at it differently…. This system of hate and anti blackness took 500 plus years to be built and it’s still being built while I’m typing …. White supremacy ideology is powerful and it’s a global system - even non white groups such as Latinos and Mexicans buy into this system because of greed and power. Most of their driver licenses say white for race ….. Donyale Luna AKA Peggy Freeman didn’t understand racism - she ran away from it but it continued to show up everywhere she went until it eventually killed her - she overdosed because she had no career , she was. Broke , her husband family didn’t like her because of her race ( he said it wasn’t but it was - he’s protecting his family from insult ) - they took Donyale’s daughter away from her and on that same night she got too high and died … watch the documentary but I didn’t like her daughter in the documentary- she was too vague - she never mentioned racism - this poor lady actually thought her mother was from the moon - Girl, your mother was a product of discrimination and hate . Her daughter’s children looks nothing like Donyale because they are biracial and her daughter is biracial - so all of this and still your offspring have wiped you off the map - no one will believe her great grandchildren if they mentioned who they grandmother was …. Just sad all around - I watched it last night and I’m still enraged with what she went through … sorry for the long text - just hate racism …. Most Whites cannot compete and they need this evil system for power and greed. It’s killing this planet !!!!!

Yes she actually renamed herself at 19 and always made up different origin stories for herself so it seems like her mental health could’ve been the biggest factor to it all. And she is technically the first black woman to be on the cover of any Vogue as she was the 1966 British Vogue cover model and I believe Beverly Johnson’s cover for American Vogue was in 1973. Also you have to remember she was a Detroit girl starting her career just as segregation was legally coming to a close. Hostility from whites was high and southerners unsubscribing from Hapers Bazaar after she had her fist cover shoot published almost completely ruined her career as Harpers cut all ties with her in response. In her shoes, I’m sure I would do my best to not invoke the ire of the people with the power to make or break you. She also did donate to Civil Rights causes later in life. She was trying to be an actress after all so it’s telling to me how once she got closer to her main goal she did try and pay it forward. I can’t judge anyone raised in segregation too harshly since they were raised to act a certain way for safety and the treatment of civil rights protestors could’ve easily scared me more into respectability politics.

I think now it’s more understood or maybe it’s only understood for white artists like Marylin Monroe, but Donyale Luna was a character through and through. She created the name. She would make up names in-between giving different answers about her name, birth place (the moon), her height which she sometimes claimed to be 7 feet tall (definitely was not but her legs are amazing). She would claim to have no mother or father like she just existed or always existed. Idk I just think it was really cool and that it was not her intention to be anti black but to be a star, and I don’t think artists all need to bare the weight of social activism. Some artists aren’t good at it and yeah I don’t expect Beyoncé to be reading bell hooks or Audrey Lorde in between shows. There’s all these artists like Salvador Dalí and Andy Warhol who Donyale collaborated with, and yet they aren’t expected to bare the weight of the 60s civil rights movement with their careers. They aren’t black of course, but in general they get to just be great enigmatic artists with little to no strings attached. There were so many other black people doing amazing things for civil rights in the 60s can Donyale just be known for being a beautiful creative person and that’s that?

She was a "mixed" woman. She was likely multi-racial- black, white and native. If a biracial or mixed person "chooses" to identify as black for socio-political reasons, that is their right, but they're still biracial or mixed. I'm mixed and identify as so. My mother never vocally identifies as anything, but I'd gather she identifies internally as mixed, even though she's closer to biracial (after a DNA test). However, her brother identifies as a black man, and is much darker complected and also with blue eyes. How we appear phenotypically is one thing, but genetically, is still the "truth", in my opinion. It did sound like she had self-identity issues, but so do so many people even today still...

I think she borrowed a lot of Indian aesthetics in her makeup and personal styling to lean into ambiguity, but I don’t think it’s fair to critique her choice through our modern lens. It was still acceptable to refer to black folks as negros in the press. And she didn’t/ couldn’t ignore her blackness for example; Donyale was friends with Mia Forrow and was attacked by a racist while they were on a double date with their respective boyfriends (or male friend for Mia) at the time. When you look for the incident the news doesn’t even name Donyale, but she along with Mia and her boyfriend at the time all went to trial to testify about the racist incident. She was the one assaulted and a big super model and the press still didn’t bother to put her name in the story. Blackness is beautiful but for Donyale it’s easy to see it as disempowering.

@@13realmusic nope, it's not an excuse. There's nothing honorable in removing your origins including your ethnicity and economic background to appeal to a group who otherwise wouldn't respect you. Donyale wasn't an isolated incident. She and every Black person during that time experienced the same bigotry but in order for her to alleviate some of her hardship, she pretended to be multiracial. I can't sympathize with her decision-making even knowing the era and the racial climate she lived in. It tells me she had a low moral compass, low self-worth, and no pride in her race. She's the very same woman who rushed across the room to suck the blood from Mick Jagger's finger when he cut himself at a party they'd attended. She did so in front of Mick's girlfriend. Ahhh love this! I remember coming across her on a pinterest post and then I seen Zendaya do one of her shoots and loved her work. You can visibly see I am black, but I always say I'm mixed heritage because I was taught to be proud of ALL of me and not just one part. I know some mixed people who aren't visibly "black" feel they have to choose a side and then people also don't understand that mixed people aren't just what we typically see normally when we think of "mix". A friend of mine is Japanese and African but came out darker skintone. I just wish the conversation around mix and blackness would be discussed in a way we can understand the nuisance of it. Nothing wrong with being just black and nothing wrong with being mixed. Because we can't accept one type of mix person into blackness but exclude the other (which I have seen been done, especially with celebrities).

I will say in my years of modeling I've definitely heard some black models say that a lot of these fashion people prefer to book the "foreign black girl" over African American one. It's unfortunate many still have to lie about their identity

I so enjoyed discovering this model from your video. I've never heard of her and i'm hooked I've got to research more about her. Would love to see her life come to the big screen, so much to unpack. I do not hold anything against her and I pity her for the suffering she endured. Trauma does so much damage, she never was in a stable environment to thrive. Thank you.

Everybody wants to be excepted in society! Nobody wants to be hated, or separated. So I could understand why she didn’t want to associate with who she was. Everyone needs to be loved and excepted no matter how old we are. Even as children and even animals need to feel acceptance.

This woman was clearly black. Her parents were mixed race but she’s was still black. She doesn’t even looked mixed. Whitney Houston parents were of mixed raced and I’ve never heard Whitney saying that she wasn’t black lmao .

She looks mixed. We’re used to Alicia keys looking biracial in the USA. When you mix a sub-Saharan African with a European you will get her phenotype usually. Black Americans usually have admixture already so most lean whiter in appearance

Non of us can tell someone if they’re white or black. People identity is for them to decide. If she says she’s not black then she is not black and that’s that.

Stop it she is clearly a black woman. And you making statements like these make it’s seems like there is something wrong with being black. I can claim to be a white woman doesn’t make it true. This woman looks black and on a good makeup day she could passed for maybe Afro Latina

I love your perspective, Ms. Alourde. Keep up the GREAT content. We take on the mentality of the oppressor and we force classifications on people. She dared to not want to be labeled for whatever reason...it could have been trauma and it could have been because she saw herself as more than a color category. I wasn't exposed to colorism until the age of 12 and at that tender age it was devastating for a while. I hate to think she OD'd to escape, life can be oh so sweet when you find and practice a philosophy of self-worth.

Loved the video but I just find it a bit awkward whenever mixed people who look darker or have a certain type of features are deemed as predominantly black. Well, she wasn't fully black and if we were to look at it that way it means that the one drop rule still matters as long as you don't look whiter or lighter. The musician Halsey has a father that's mixed with black but her herself looks white, so people don't call her a black woman. You're black if you look black and someone in your ancestry is black...........

I love your content and your hard work in bringing these very interesting stories! Most mixed people have racial confusion and do not want to be forced to claim one race as their primary race. She got into a profession at such a young age where there is so much hate for a people, she probably thought identifying as something other than so-called "black" (we're varying shades of brown) would lessen the hate. Instability in a household where her parents may have had issues with their own racial identity usually will pass on to a child. Lastly, so-called "blacks" who want mixed people to identify as "black" while rejecting them for being mixed before their fame makes no sense whatsoever.

I don't consider mixed people black. There are a lot black people that don't. People sure do like lumping all black in a category when it suits them. Just like they did when they one dropped all the rejects to into blackness. Like the Irish that they just tossed in the group for no reason.

My kids are black and white and only black folks relate to them, meaning no white person says “hey, you’re half white right?” And few generations ago half black kids were still sold as slaves. I tell my kids that they are multi racial with majority blacks

excellent point about the psychology of the era. I agree; a lot of people that “say” they would or wouldn’t do something is only an emotional response. Until their put into a situation similar to that person (time, place, same people, everything the same) they probably couldn’t even do as well as the person their throwing shade on. Judge not🙌🏽💯

Thank you for the research that you do I am a bachelor's degree holder of African-American history and I can never get enough of the research that you have done you have provided us. It's helped me gain so much material for future writings just because of your research, specifically for this video yours has been the most thorough and I love that you explore the issues of race and how our people had to use race as a social mobility method in the times in which they live, in this case certainly the denouncement of her race allowed her social mobility and the ability to move in efferent circles but clearly she also suffered because it seems like someone like her was constantly in search of her own identity.

I can empathize especially with the trauma she faced just trying to break into modeling. She was really tall and impressively beautiful. I agree with you, none of us can truthfully say what we would do. People want to be accepted not ostracized. Many passed just to survive and wanted to live freely and I probably would too...however the pain and suffering to those who are discovered was worse. Covering your tracks with lies is even more distressing because living a lie never brings peace.😢

Rather sad but I get it dealing with what she had to deal with during those times, she didn’t look like someone who was mixed, she doesn’t even look racially ambiguous, she looks black for someone with supposedly more white blood than black so was her dad really white or a white passing black man idk but she don’t look mixed at all for someone whose supposedly 75% white and 25% black
