Episode 4: Dudhsagar Falls Glory
In this episode, we embark on a breathtaking journey through the Braganza Ghat section, traveling from Kulem to Castle Rock. As we depart from Kulem station, a pair of powerful diesel banker locomotives are attached to the rear of our train, ready to assist us through the steep gradients of the Western Ghats. Immediately, we find ourselves surrounded by the lush green forests of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary and Mollem National Park. The scenic beauty is enhanced by the Dudhsagar River, which runs parallel to the railway track, creating a serene and picturesque atmosphere.
Our train moves deeper into the dense forest cover, the air thick with the freshness of nature. Just 11 kilometers north of Kulem lies the star of the route: the magnificent Dudhsagar Falls, nestled amidst the towering Western Ghats. The falls, a spectacular sight especially during the monsoon, are a must-see highlight of the journey. The entire section is renowned for its scenic beauty, and the towering mountains of the Western Ghats provide a stunning backdrop.
The 27-kilometer stretch from Kulem to Castle Rock via Dudhsagar Falls is a marvel of engineering and nature. Episode 4 concludes at Londa Junction, where our train halts for a brief 30-minute stop to undergo a reversal before switching onto the Pune-bound mainline. Our train, 11098 Poorna Express at 0:32 departs from Kulem Station, where powerful banker Diesel locomotives are attached to the rear of the train to assist with the steep ascent through the Western Ghats. As we move forward, the real adventure unfolds.
From 4:56 onwards to 15:00, we enter the picturesque Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary and Mollem National Park. The dense jungles and towering trees surround the tracks, while the Doodhsagar River runs parallel, creating a serene backdrop. The lush greenery and the pristine river add to the enchanting beauty of this region.
At 15:18, we catch the first glimpse of the majestic Doodhsagar Waterfalls, cascading dramatically down the mountainside. More stunning views of Doodhsagar Falls come on the way from 15:18 onwards. The sighting becomes even more thrilling at 15:57, as the train passes closer to the falls, offering an even better view. Then, at 19:13 onwards, the full grandeur of the falls is on display, with water roaring down in multiple streams amidst the misty mountains-a truly mesmerizing spectacle.
From 22:24 onwards, we finally reach the Doodhsagar Falls station, a moment eagerly anticipated by all. After a brief pause to soak in the beauty, the train continues its journey through the dense jungles of Mollem National Park from 23:49 onwards, surrounded by wilderness and serenity.
At 44:24, we arrive at Castle Rock Station, a key station nestled in the Ghats. The 27-kilometer Ghat section that begins at Kulem station concludes at Castle Rock station, offering breathtaking views of the Western Ghats and lush greenery along the scenic route. Here, we provide a brief history and significance of Castle Rock, once a pivotal point during the meter-gauge era. The Banker Diesel locomotives get detached from the rear of the train at Castle Rock station. Following this, at 49:58, we witness the departure from Castle Rock Station as our train ventures further into the forests.
From 50:00, the train traverses the Castle Rock-Londa Junction section, winding through sharp curves, with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Finally, at 1:05:09, we arrive at Londa Junction, an important railway hub. We provide a detailed briefing on Londa Jn’s strategic significance as a junction station, serving as a key connection point in the region. Here, our train undergoes a reversal, marking the end of this episode.
