Hmmm in my opinion Doom 3's graphics lagged far behind Half Life 2's and were first introduced at e3 itself. It's a great game, but it failed to revolutionize gaming in all its sections like HL2 did. But I must admit that they did a great job with the lighting and giving a new approach to the scenarios that served as the seed for the creation of another title such as Dead Space.

That's just the Planar Reflections. They just render the scene twice from the pdtspective of the mirror. It's extremely taxing because you have to render the entirety of the scene. In Half Life 2 for instance you can only have one reflective surface with planar reflections on one map because of how demanding it is. Very inefficient. the It would be interesting to see o see it's combination with other techniques. For example have a Parallax Corrected Cubemap for the environment combined with SSR on top of it. Then just reflect the character with planar reflections. Haven't seen a lot of games use Parallax Corrected Cubemaps though. To perfect it you could use cone traced reflections or Voxel Reflections to fill in the details where SSR fails and planar reflections would be too taxing. It would still be demangi g but less than complete use of planar reflections or Ray Traced Reflections.

The lightning and texture resolution was so impressive that even the full game release in 2004 didn't achieve the quality that this alpha had. Somehow, in the final release, the characters didn't have the self-volumetric-shadows that can be seen here. the corpses stayed on the floor and fade away in particles. The engine of D3 was a disaster. Carmack implemented revolutionary things! yes! but before refining the base. Which was very very bad. This is why in the end it was clunky, slow, and unrealistically dark. When you write an engine in 1996, after 6 years you build a new one, not try to bring the old garbage to the modern era. The D3 engine was rotten at the core. It was revolutionary in the sense like you would bring Ben Johnson to compete today in athletics and give him the newest most revolutionary pair of running shoes. But he would still be 60 years old or 70, what age he is.

***** same here. I think people expected something very different from a Doom game, after all the pace is very unlike the first two games, and the firefights are different as well. However I'm glad that D3 is what it is, because there is pretty much nothing like it. I'm sure D4 will be amazing but the third one will always hold a special place in my heart. Also if you haven't, try Doom 3 with Perfected mod. Not only is it stunningly beautiful, but also feels slightly different in a better way without changing the core of the game.

+C0T0HA Well, i'll tell you why it got hate, it was full of odd maze like structures (even more than the original, and all that while being in relatively small spaces unlike the previous dooms) and backtracking, looking at your phone thingy for codes as well as searching for those codes, and more sidetracking. And also maybe the lack of weapon flashlight.. All that without the ability to sprint like in the last games. In one word - a grind. Aside from that it was pretty good. If there was some kind of mod where the infinite search for codes and backtracking was deleted, and the game would just keep progressing at all times, i'd happily play it again even now. I mean i still really liked the game, but the part of the game where you where looking for codes and where the heck you need to go was an utter pain.

No idea why this just came across my YT feed, weird ass algorithm doing weird ass things? But those 02' & 03' E3 demo's were off the charts type of hype. Doom 3, Half-Life 2, The World of Warcraft.... Does anybody else remember seeding and downloading the 2003 Half Life 2 tech demo? Had to watch that with my friends at least half dozen times!! I worked up enough money that I got to build my first PC fall of 2002 when I was 13. Still remember it too, 2200+Athlon, 9700pro, Gig of DDR400. TOP of the line, and that damn thing STILL struggled with with the D3 demo and that was just into the 2003 new year. What an absolutely fucking unmatched time, not only in life, but in gaming, that couple year stretch became. Battlefield 1942, Warcraft 3, WoW, Doom 3, HL2... Hell, even "afterthought" games like Painkiller, Farcry, and Unreal Tournament were still amazing offerings. I feel beyond fortunate to have grown up in that era, because it's difficult as hell to try and explain to my 12 year old nephew just how much soul the gaming community, and the games themselves, seem to have lost.

A completely different approach to the Doom franchise, but a good one. I would love to see this kind of approach with todays graphics! It had some "Alien" -vibes to it, which I really liked!

Doom was always action oriented. This one and quake 4 are the "little dark age" for me. I played most within a year, and have to say, Quake's movement system or FEAR's tactical approach. is just vastly superior to the slow crawl. Hell, even half life was more dynamic than this, even though graphically inferior. Gets monotonous.

I wish they would remake this specific doom 3 game with todays UE5 engine, you know how fucking scary it would be seeing this in RE5 technology, shit this scared me back then when it was new, but now obviously the tech in this version is super dated, don't get me wrong i still love the original DOOM 3, but hope someone can restore this PC gem to new levels of demonic hell.
@Strelokos666

I really consider Doom 3 is "scary" on my list. There's like a constant feel of sick pressure. A cursed abandoned place like a classic trope but it is that thin line between quietness and omnipresence of evil. Usually you are given breaks in horror games, sometimes even a gunfight with grunts considered being a relief in comparison with melee monsters but there are only gruesome monsters in gruesome and abandoned environment. So you get the idea of leaving the quiet desolate creepy place ASAP even knowing next corner there probably gonna be a jumpscare + claustrophobic combat sequence and that's not helping. Those familiar tricks get you even after 5 times in a row no matter how hard you try to prepare yourself. The monsters are scary, artstyle and environment are creepy, situation is creepy, lack of combat is unsettling and combat is unnerving. Still remember how I was playing the game at the age of 7. The mission where you entering the hell for the first time making your way through 2 hellknights. That was really sick shit especially level beginning with tons of stained blood and naked corpses all around. What a lovely childhood lol.
