Pain elementals have "splash damage" when they die because they were buffed to stop you being able to just stand in front of them to stop them spawning lost souls. If a Doom 64 PE tries to spawn a lost soul but the spot is occupied, it does a bunch of damage instead. The "splash damage" on death is you blocking the on-death lost soul spawns.

If I recall correctly, "Watch Your Step" is named that because there's panels on the floor that spawn monsters. That's why they seem to spawn at "random", or without a discernible pattern unless you're aware of how the maps' mechanics work in detail.

Bit hard to have a big modding community for a Nintendo 64 game. I think it might have been a bigger deal if it had been ported to PC in the late 2000s, but I'm not sure if it was possible back then. If it took this long to get a PC port of a Doom game, there had to be some non-sense preventing it from happening. Lost code, legal garbage, etc...

The one enemy type in Doom. Shotgunner: hitscan imp Cacodemon: flying imp Revenant: imp skeleton Baron of Hell: big imp
Maybe it's my impression, but I think that each enemy in the game has its own artificial intelligence. The zombie man and shotgunner have a longer response time to shoot since it is almost impossible to avoid shooting. Baron of Hell, on the other hand, has a faster response time and pursues the player more avidly. Cacodemons attack sneakily, advance very fast when attacking the player from behind. The lost souls are terrible, they are the most feared enemy of the game and the elemental pain, of course, for repawn these bastards. Interestingly, the revenant of the brutal mod doom 64 looks like the skeleton of an imp and it is like an imp that fires homing fireballs. This breakdoom phase is one of the easiest, so much so that sargent mark IV put a cyberdemon in this phase, in the brutal mod doom 64, to balance the difficulty that was low, well at least that's what I think.

11:43 There are multiple thing-based triggers scattered all around the room that spawn the various enemies. It's possible to avoid some of them by going the right path. Also, some of the enemies are tagged to spawn even more enemies when they die. 25:30 That pain elemental was definitely stuck. That's another interesting quirk of Doom 64: some enemies (usually the bigger ones, like the pinkies, cacos, pain elementals and even imps) can get stuck on doors or certain lifts if they're moving and the door/lift closes. I don't know the exact technical details behind why this happens, but it can be annoying and even potentially nasty depending on where exactly it happens. Thankfully it's pretty rare to get it unintentionally. Can't wait to see you do Unholy Temple and No Escape. No Escape is especially rough, and it'll be way harder with fast monsters.

The difficulty of the phases increases gradually, with the exception of some phases. Arrived at Pitfall, give it more difficulty. IIRC Watch Your Step has a mix of linedef spawns and timers for the stuff in that area with all the room-over-room stuff and the central room up the lift. And it's pretty annoying that Watch Me Die! tends to put barons in place of hell knights in a lot of spots, but I was thinking the lack of revenants and chaingunners makes Doom 64 the opposite of Plutonia.

awesome work as always! Also I know it's a bit of a weird request, but can you do the final level without using the demon keys or unmaker? using them makes the boss fight a cakewalk, but without it turns into a really awesome messy fight that can be pretty challenging

Was already planning to since demon keys are not carried over with pistol starts.

This is a bit late but I couldn’t watch it before. I really like the sprite for the cyberdemon, hopefully we will get to see some without invulnerability to see how they behave on this console! :)

So for MAP17 (Watch Your Step!), each of the boxes on the ground in the circular room has a teleport trigger that would spawn in another set of demons. It's not a linedef, but a thing that does the triggering. But of course you're just like "WHEEEEEEEEEE!" so I'm not surprised you didn't notice. :P

I couldn’t immediately see it in the comments but in Map17 there are dark tiles in the map’s floor, I believe those are the triggers when it comes to the monster spawning, hence “Watch your step”

29:10 decino taking a Rorschach test :) 39:36 ``Music weird`` - it's basically deep growling and fly buzzing so depending on your definition technically could be classified as prog/ambient ... but wait there's a lot of weird stuff in the wild, how about "Gilgamesh" sung in Sumerian, or Bronze Age folk of the Heilung, or the good old Pink Floyd with dog "singing" by Mademoiselle Nobs. :)
