@Dremora This is entirely my conjecture because clearly some of the actions made don't make sense if it's just "from memory" Like, literally no one "remembers" there being a cyberdemon in e1m7, not a single soul. Same for cacos and lost souls. Similarly, even basic sanity checks would have revealed the unopenable door in e2m4 and the fundamental lack of ammo in a few levels in episode 2. So I percieve this as as a project that started "from memory" but devolved to "let's just make cursed doom 1 lmao" But yeah to clarify "scuffed and weird" is entirely my theory that I pulled out of my ass.

something that popped into my head while watching: when you ask if that's how the mapper remembers it or how they wanted to enhance / improve it, it's probably both. If someone hasn't played doom 1 in a while and try to remember how a map goes, their memory might embellish certain parts. Or if they have played recently but played the game when they were a kid too, they might remember what kid them did and want to make the map what they remembered from when they were 8 even if they know that's not ""really"" how it goes.

There's certainly two ways of looking at it, and I think it's worth dividing them that way: you have the maps that you try to recreate from memory, and then the maps that you recreate how you remember them. It sounds similar, but one seeks to recreate the maps as they are, the other pays homage to our memories of them. I think it is a fairly weak map set for that reason: if you wanted a reimagining you'll find the vanilla maps lacking, and if you wanted a recreation you'll find the modified maps out of place. It does bind us in one way: a Cyberdemon in E1M7 is disliked by all.

I can't help but to think not every map is actually done from memory, some are, some look more like edited versions of the original. Too many details seem to be correct, as if they just messed with some vertexes and made some rooms bigger or they painstakingly played that map for days to remake it the day after. It's fun in one way but I also get kind of annoyed watching this. I did enjoy the E1M7 map, that felt legit messed up as the maker simply ran out of 'memory' and added IDK and wrong monsters etc. funny shit! While I vigorously disagree with this, and find E3 better than E2 on avarage, there is no denying that, well, E1 is almost enteirly Romero, while E2 and E3 are pure Sandy and it shows. DOOM2 has somewhat similar problem, as it frontloads you with American McGee, and than it's back to Sandy, with ocasional Romero put in for good mesure. Now don't get me wrong, Sandy did make some good maps, but he also made all the really shitty ones too. The problem is, most of his maps are built around a gimmick. If said gimmick is good, you get fun maps like MAP08 or MAP23. if it is bad, you get E3M5. If it really, really sucks you get MAP24...
@lordbiscuitthetossable5352
Жыл бұрын
@@mancubwwa I think the issue is not necessarily that Sandy is a bad mapper; personally, I think his highlights are really memorable, just the guy had done so many maps on a tight deadline that he couldn't spend much time refining them. Given that he apparently got much of his experience from DnD, it made sense that some of his maps (particularly tricks and traps) played out interestingly. Just the guy did so much that it was a wonder that he produced as many decent maps as he did, and I mean that respectfully; the guy is an absolute legend for putting out that many maps. In particular, most E2 maps were meant to be E3 maps, which is why Inferno felt like a step down in difficulty. Really shows how choppy those games were in practice. But yeah, there's probably a big reason why I tend to mainly play the first 16 or so maps of any given megawad. XD

On the subject of the scale being off. Tomb Raider Anniversary has a developer commentary and on it I remember them talking about how they play tested the game with people who had played the original and one problem they kept encountering is that people remembered things as different sizes then they actually were. The example they gave were the waterfall in Lost Valley (the third level) and the T-rex in the same level. People consistently remembered them being much larger then they really were in the old game. I find DOOM 1 Episode 1 to be consistently great. Episode 2 is less constant but has its highs in the form of Deimos Anomaly, Containment Area, Deimos Lab and Halls of the Damned. Episode 3 is consistently... not good, with it having no stand out maps and containing my 2 least favourite maps, Unholy Cathedral and Limbo. Episode 4 is pretty good on average but doesn't have the highs of Episode 1 or 2. DOOM 2 is consistently meh, with only two really great maps, Tricks and Traps and the Living End. As for its worse side, theres the boring Gantlet, Waste Tunnels and Factory, the overly ambitious Downtown, the absolute atrocity of Nirvana and a final boss somehow even more disappointing than the spider mastermind. Master Levels only has Paradox, Bloodsea Keep, Black Tower, and the Dr Sleep maps that can be called good. The rest are okay at best and mind-numbing at worse. TNT is my favourite Megawad despite its uneven quality. It has some of DOOM's best like Wormhole, Prison, Pharaoh as well as underrated gems like Metal, Steel Works, Deepest Reaches, Shipping/Respawning, Central Processing and the overly-hated Mount Pain. Still, Habitat and Baron's Den are awful and other maps make some odd choices and gimmicks. Plutonia is generally great, with Well of Souls, Impossible Mission and Bunker standing as the exceptions.

I think something to consider here is it's one thing recreating 1 room but trying to do an entire level will have room looking off as if it's connecting rooms aren't in the right place, it'll affect that. Like if you was to draw a face from memory, getting the chin wrong would result in the mouth being wrong for example.

I partly wonder if people honestly don't remember the later maps that well and decided they'll at least make a GOOD map. Like if you realized you don't remember where the pickups are located, but know having only 2 ammo boxes and 1 berserk all stage isn't going to fly. So maybe you put them where they seem logical and eyeball the completion.

Some of these maps have textures and item placements way too accurate to than what they should be. It almost seems as if some creators, either had a reference while creating the maps or they only intentionally "screwed up" certain parts of the map to make the "from memory" stipulation plausible. Ive played each of these level at least 40 times and I can remember general layouts and secrets but textures and object placement i so much more of a minute detail. Yet I find in most of these levels, the textures, torch placements and such are like perfect but they "forget" 1 of the 2 only secrets in the map. Its just sketchy. That and the creative freedom they were given just ruins the spirit of the project. I think each creator should've been able to study the map beforehand but once the actual creating process began, they must only go off of memory.

There are two things that keep me coming back to OG Doom over Doom II and most wads: First is the atmosphere. Episode 1 with it's polished sci-fi military base setting, episode 2 with it's older, warped, run down base, and episode 3 being the closest approximation of hell I'd ever seen in a video game until Doom 3. Hell in Doom 2 and Plutonia generally just felt like more city/base levels with a hell skybox (The Spirit World in Doom 2 being the only level between either of them that came close to feeling like a genuine hell level). TNT is somewhere in-between... it's hell levels are closer to Doom 1, but TNT's general architecture style still leaves something to be desired. But Doom 1 man. It was dripping with atmosphere. And it was more colorful too... far less drab brown and grey textures like in Doom 2. The other, and perhaps more important one, is the pacing. Most fights in Doom 1 are over very quickly once you know what you're doing, and as such, the gameplay flows much faster, and allows you to take it more at your own pace. Zombies and imps go down in 1 - 2 shots from anything, pinkies and lost souls are a bit meatier, but go down fast with berserk or higher tier weapons, and barons... they can be tanky, but once you're good at secret hunting, you can almost always find enough rockets to take them down in 5-6 shots. Cacos are the only pacing killers, and even they can be somewhat mitigated with the high tier weapons and smart secret hunting. Doom 2 OTOH doubles the monster roster and ALL of the new monsters (other than hellknights if you count them) are pace killers. Chaingunners are so deadly that you MUST prioritize them, forcing you to hunt for them while ignoring other baddies, and throw whatever strategy you had before out the window. Revenants aren't too durable, but they can spam homing rockets forcing you to dive for cover or retreat losing lots of ground and time, and in the right situations even one can be deadly. Mancubi and arachnotrons are semi-tanky and frickin' spam dangerous projectiles (to this day I can't consistently dodge mancubus fireballs at close-to-mid range). Pain elementals are pure evil that demand attention since they can spawn monsters endlessly in a game where ammo is plentiful but not unlimited. And then there's the archviles, the enemy that kills the pacing so hard that they get their own paragraph. Not only are they so deadly that you must prioritize them just like chaingunners, but they've got higher HP than anything other than barons and bosses, and they resurrect other dead enemies AND you're pretty much guaranteed to have to stop in your tracks and take cover at least once for every one you see. The only way to quickly kill an archvile is to BFG them... and even then, sometimes they get lucky RNG and survive the first shot, at which point you're almost guaranteed to take damage or die yourself. They're so dangerous that if a mapmaker is feeling lazy, they can just ambush you with an archvile (or several) and call it a day, and I've played enough megawads now that I'm tired of seeing it. And in addition to all these pace killing enemies, there's the super shotgun. Wonderfully satisfying to use, absolutely... but having to wait two full seconds between every shot in a game where most enemies can tank 3 or 4 full blasts to the face bogs the pacing down even further. In the time it takes to kill one mancubus or archvile with the super shotgun, you could've mowed down a dozen or more Doom 1 enemies with the chaingun or plasma. To be fair, I understand and mostly agree with the counter argument that these enemies provide much needed variety and make combat far more cerebral. And it works wonderfully in Doom 2 and especially Plutonia (thanks to the shorter, more contained levels, and genius design + enemy placement). But many mapmakers just don't know when to show restraint like the OG Doom team or the Casali bros. (and lol yeah I know, but IMHO the Casalis still show relative restraint compared to all that's come after :P). Doom 1 certainly has its design flaws, but the atmosphere and pacing combine to create a certain feel to it that nothing has managed to replicate before or since. And IMHO, that's what it offers to make it stand out from other wads, and why I keep coming back to it. Ok and maybe some nostalgia too :)

You'd probably have a better experience with the chainsaw if you did small steps back it while fighting Pinky's. It keeps you out of range of their bite while doing continuous damage.
