I found this a nice palate cleanser from Descent, which we've played a lot of, especially from the new Chains that Rust expansion which had some real slogs of quests. The faster pace, simplified initiative system, fast paced play (especially as Overlord), and no need for a healer mean this has a place next to Descent, especially for those nights when we're trying to wash the taste of a bad Descent/IA quest from our mouths. It is certainly a less tactical game, but is also one co-workers and other casual players might enjoy. Love the videos!

I think it's so tactically different from the other games you mentioned, that it's much more satisfying to play. The cover system and the fact that you can't be wasteful with your demons without handing over glory kill cards mean it's a rich strategic challenge for both sides. I also find the theme works much better than Descent or Imperial Assault. I would also like to mention that the original Doom expansion did away with the exploration part because it took so long on the table, which is why they didn't do that with their other later games.

Doom is much more streamlined and easier to teach. It's more run and gun style than Descent. It's for a different audience. It appeals more to younger people. Set up a mission and go at it. My sons love it. They don't want to get more involved and do campaigns. I think it's great for what it's intended.

Another plus for Doom is I don't want a campaign style of game and sometimes you just want to crush people with you buddies in a scenario. Quick, fun, simple, not a big money sink... :) I do like your detailed overview and always a solid review.

from a game this expensive, which takes some time to set up and put away, I'd expect more than a light and repetitive shoot 'em up.

btw you may want to try Forlorn Hope, which is a simple, straightforward, and "unassuming" shoot em up

I don't understand how it could feel dated in 2017, we are having a lot of fun with it. I bought Batman GCC. Ho boy! Doom is so much more fun, more dynamic even more thematic. They just really well adapted the video game and not talking about accessibility. And the OL is really more interesting than in Batman. The game can drag a bit I have to say but appart that it may be the best 1 vs all up to date. The cards system in doom is just awesome, no need to learn a ton of skills. Just play the cards and read what's on it and do it. All the streamlined work is was make it shine. The cards for activation so you always have to adapt , the card for defense make it faster than rolling dice. You manage your hand , get to deck build a bit when looting weapon. The teleport pt make it really frantic. I could introduce many none gamers to it and have fun directly from the constitution of the team with roles and weapons, it's enough to get a sense of difference and cooperation. And me as hardcore gamer I enjoyed this a lot over other too complicated game for nothing in this same category i.e BGCC. And the one shot mission to fit the period people don't have time for campaign any more they want to play enjoy directly and that's it. I know people are buying campaign game even me but they sit and are never finished. So what you might see as his weakness because yes it's not a rpg campaign game it's also his force as it's a really frantic skirmish with easy rules set.

Descent comparison to Imperial Destroyer: right composer, wrong movie theme. ;) Great review as always.

Great video, Marco, as always. I wish you could come to Geekway one of these years. Would love to sit down and play a game with you.

I'm on the fence about getting this one becasue I have all the D&D board game dungeon crawlers and not enough time to play them. This does seem like an introductory dungeon crawler for non-gamers that will have fun playing the one vs many asymmetrical combat game. DOOM is the theme to do that with. If you make it too complex it’s not like the video game which is pretty mindless yet addictive first person shooter. It's good that there's no campaign mode but ti has loosely connected storyline missions. There’s a video with experienced gamers who had a blast pun intended with this expensive beer & pretzels filler game well except for the number of components and no tray organizer to speak of. @ 10:55 Activation deck is called the Initiative deck which threw me off for a second lol but one half dozen the other @ 19:30 Glory Kill rules “To enter a space occupied by a demon, a marine must spend one additional movement point.” I wonder why the Red dice have less hits. I would think red “bloody” color dice should have higher values than black. They’re nice though. PS "Once Upon a Time there was a video game" as you said pretty much sums up the age of DOOM yet it's still popular theme of tough guys vs evil demons in a sci-fi setting.

Would you prefer to play 1st edition or 2nd edition more? I have never finished playing 1st edition because people treated it like a tactical shooter and spent 5 minutes per turn. We played for 5 hours then went to bed and never returned to it.

Doom looks like FF's answer to those who where expecting to shoot up the empire in Imperial Assault campaigns, but instead found them selves doing far less shooting and more running away. I like doom original PC game, but not sure I wanna start another FF miniature collection after the IA burn.

Thanks for an excellent review, Marco. The problem is not that it is "dated", but, much like Descent 2.0 (and Imperial Assault is Descent 2.0 "derivative" in the Star Wars universe), it is simply a system that is vastly inferior to its predecessors (Doom 1.0 and Descent 1.0). The original Doom had only one fault: it was very unforgiving and difficult to win for the Marines' player. Descent 1.0 addressed that, having become one of the best tactical combat games ever. Regretfully, in their second editions Fantasy Flight went the way of "simplifying" these games to an extent of "throwing the baby out with bath water", making it as "bland and repetitive" as Gears of War (no wonder some components and mechanics look suspiciously similar). Personally, I think it has something to do with the lead designer on all these "second edition" projects, but that's maybe beyond the point...

Marco... did you consider that this game is more like "Gears of War" than any of the other games??? I have two copies of "Gears", so it's pretty cool to create your own scenarios. Love the mini's and the board. Good review

I prefer the Gears of War board game - the cooperative approach makes it more fun and somehow alleviates the repretitive nature of gameplay (move, shoot, etc)

To me, the card play and the amount of customization out of the box would be the main reason to get the game(that is why I got it). I also always find Decent and Imperial Assault you are always staring in the rulebook because of all of the extra abilities you speak of. Something to be said about a game that plays smoothly without interruption.

How do you balance the game more the marines are to overpowered.
