I didn't know Shun'ei was *that* hated by the fans. In my opinion, his backstory and his struggle with his power are pretty neat ideas. His design, though, clearly looks like SNK took a cutting room floor scrap to save time. Since Shun'ei was meant to appeal to the Chinese fandom, it would have been better if SNK based his design off a popular Wuxia or Drama actor rather than a hipster-ish mess with green hair (Meitenkun is ok, because Soul Hunter). I think there's still a chance for the character to have an updated look and personality.

My first time encountering Shun'ei was in XIV, but in the mentioned video of SugarPunch. I learned that he was actually the main protagonist only in the manga. And I have to be honest, I really don't like his design. At first, I thought he looked like an XZDW character but worse. However, his character grew on me in the manga, especially with his fight with Ryo, and in XV's Story mode. I still don"t like his design, but his mature personality sticks. Plus, many people actually like him specifically because he looked like a K-Pop idol, so I guess he works for the new generation. I do hope that they don't end his story arc in XV. I really want to know what happens next in his story. Good video. I want to know what the next video will be about.

Two more things that I feel contributed to his lukewarm reception were his Teammates and Theme in XIV. I know there's people who like Meitenkun because he is cute, but he is honestly pretty boring and gimmicky. Tung Fu Rue makes a lot of sense from a narrative perspective, but very few people actually want to play as him. Benimaru is frankly the most interesting of his teammates and gives Team Hero a lot more charisma than Team China. Compare Team China in XIV to Team Japan, all the K Teams and all the Ash Teams and it becomes clear he was never meant to stand out. As for the music... Jesus Christ, their XIV theme is beyond forgettable. Laid-back chill traditional Chinese music is NOT what I associate with a young, energetic protagonist from a fighting game. Imagine if SNK gave them a theme similar to the Stage 5 song from Mushihimesama Futari. It's an AMAZING mix of techno and Asian folkloric music. If you haven't heard that song, I highly encourage you do so. Team Hero's theme in XV is WAAAAAY better. Probably one of the best themes in the game. And a lot of it is thanks once again to Benimaru. I am not the first one to notice this theme shares similarities with Benimaru's themes in the NESTS Saga. A good choice, I feel. These issues definitely drag Shun'ei down in conjunction with his individual problems. If XVI continues his Saga, I really hope SNK seriously considers taking a different approach with him.

I sometimes get worried about myself and my artistic tastes (as I want to be a game developer one day as well), because I never really saw a problem with Shun'ei's outfit, while everyone seems like they're eyes are exploding when they look at him. Maybe it is something specific of my contact with chinese mythology and culture. I really love those old tales of warriors and royals and creaures; chinese empeors back at the day used to dress in a VERY FLASHY manner, with highly styalized fabrics, specially in the red and yellow colors, the later was seen as the color of royalty and fortune (which I think falls nicely with the fact that he was born with mysterious powers; maybe there is a forgotten clan in China that used to seal away entities like Verse and Raga using their Amplified Specters, just like the Sacred Treasures and Orochi). The techinically of the blue implemented on his design to balance out the red seems perfectly fine to me, too. And about the lifted trouser and the headphones, just as expected, it was meant to appeal to a younger audience (which also explains the way Isla's story was developed; Kula and K' never really had a romantic interaction due to the age gap, but they really tried to make a 'rivals to lovers' out of them this time in XV Story Mode). Honestly, I kinda love the design. Shun'ei feels like he could easily be an anime protagonist, looking very natural along characters from maybe Boku no Hero, from example. Kirishima dyes his hair red, so yeah, Shun can dye his green, too. He looks cool in the manga and concept arts, too. Maybe his design was just hard to translate to 3D models or something. Also his powers are by fare the coolest looking in the entire game. Maybe there are things yet to be revealed to make his design make more sense for the majority. I like the idea that he is secretly a dreamer of doing something artistic as well, just like Isla. Maybe he wants to be a dancer, or a singer. I know its unusal but I just like the guy so much. He alings with what I like to see on a chracter, and feels like a sudden modern twist on the classic stuff I've researched about China.

Personally speaking, the issue I have with Shun'ei is "Unintended Lack of Cohesion". Characters like Sylvie from the previous game or Gilgamesh and Gogo from the Final Fantasy series work because their offbeat color scheme and costumes fit their personalities: They are weirdos that like to stand out. Shun'ei is NOT that. Guy starts quiet and lacking confidence, and even at his highest point still remains chill and laidback. His unconventional choice of apparel and colors stand opposite to who he is as a person. I'd argue the headphones, arm bands and chains are perfectly okay (though I'd personally choose to have the headphones down on the neck), but the jacket, tucked pants and mismatching colors need to go. Also, in regards to Chinese clothes and regal colors, I really like them too. There's a lot of fighting game characters that look great in them. I don't know what nationality Gato is but he seems vaguely Chinese to me and looks incredibly badass with his traditional clothes and long ponytail.
@mathieud1256
2 жыл бұрын
The headphones aren't the real issue, here. The fact that Shun'ei's outfit has too many details on it gives him a messy look. If u want to be a character designer you should take on consideration that too many adds in one outfit gives u the impression of randomness n draft work ("soul calibur vi random creation" like Maximilian says). It also depends on the game. For instance vegeta's battle suit wouldn't ever fit in a KOF game, and so is the over anime vibed character that is Shun'ei. KOF have characters that are mainly divided into two types of outfits : the casual clothes and the martial clothes. What makes some characters look so badass in design has a lot to do with their clothes fashion . A lot of fans really appreciate kyo's nest costume for example. And Shun'ei is part of the casual clothes wearing character designs. Now think about it, i don't know you but if it were me, I wouldn't mind walking in the streets wearing XV iori's costume : classy black jacket, buisness shirt, leather shoes, you may look like a rich star that spends some money in clothing, but Shun'ei 's clothes? No no, people would look at you like some kinda freak for sure. THAT is the problem of Shun'ei's outfit. The guy lives in his own world, the "chuunibyou" world. (Chuunibyou describes youngsters in japan who think of themselves as real anime heroes they talk, act and dress as such to express their "real" selves)
@ghost_3lliot633

@@mathieud1256 I can see where you're coming from The casual clothes and martial arts uniforms are definitely a thing But there are also characters like Kay Dash and Khronen for example But I understand those have a simpler color scheme, as well as that we're already used to them Honestly I think Iori's style was always quite flashy, and it makes sense since he's a musician I stay by saying that I don't get what is so 'unreal' about Shun'ei's design. He looks like any other teen at a convention to me, or a street dancer, or something like that.

No man, no street dancer wears some weird muay thai like spirit talisment bandages on both arms with a school tie. And Shun'ei isn't a street dancer, neither is he really interested in music. He just casually listen to Athena songs time to time to relax, that's all and he lives in mountains. So his outfit doesn't reflects his character unlike Isla. And the idea of having all these elements of his outfit (the headphone included) as limiters to his Verse hand powers is just stupidly ridiculous coming from SNK. Yeah master Tung Fu, where did you buy that headphone for Shun'ei? In some chinese music store specialized in talisman security seals? Or was it like, among the talismans u possess since ancient times, one happened to look just like a headphone (which u can listen to music with, and no jack btw. Blutooth? Magic or hidden advanced technology from the past) ? Now allow me to explain why Shun'ei's outfit is considered as a messy mix of elements that don't fit each other. _1 School shirt buttoned up to the neck + tie = respecting the school uniform code dressing. Yet the guy has rolled up pants and accessories that clearly reflect the contrary. Weird and unlogic, people who likes to dress more freely or wildly with school uniforms are portrayed with a shirt showing off the torso more, or a tee-shirt instead, like kyo's former outfit. _2 ancient talisman bandage mixed with modern headphones _3 unrealistic anime green tainted hair 4 a guy that is supposed to be chinese, orphan and living in mountains, not a half american like ryo, nor an biologically modified human like k9999 or kula. _4 flashy colors They just put too much mix in one outfit that don't link together to a point u can hardly understand what style is supposed to be emphasized from it : Martial arts, traditional chinese, modern technology, occult talisman, school uniform, lazy pants, anime hair, in the end you don't see the direction in all this, and that's what makes this overworked outfit a failure to the eyes of average people.

I never hated Shun'ei. If anything, he was fine to me. It's a good thing I'm not a super SNK fan like a lot of people invested in the King of Fighters series, so that allowed me to look at him with my normal views instead of a specific view. Now knowing the history behind the character, SNK should have done better to make Shun'ei more presentable. Otherwise, the fans wouldn't have dumped all their criticism on the fictional character. The fact that he was also raised by Tung Fu Rue was also interesting and makes him a disciple like Terry and Andy. KOF15 staff to their credit, even had an ending image of the three if you fight as Terry, Andy, and Shun'ei; and has beaten the game with them. Even before Shun'ei, makes certain quotes to characters i.e., Terry referencing being trained by the martial arts master in KOF14. Also, the reason for Shun'ei's headphones was actually explained before. Shun'ei Amp powers were extremely powerful as a child, and to top it off, Shun'ei was haunted by mysterious voice that caused him major discomfort. The headphones were given to him by Tung himself to help managed his Amp abilities and calm him down. People can talk trash about his clothes and design, but the headphone thing is actually reasonable enough when you consider Shun'ei's backstory and the reason why he was left to Tung by his parents is due to the powers he was born with that caused so much trouble in his birth parents' lives. He's trying to control himself and his abilities through Martial Arts. In any case, this about all I can say about it.

More of Shun'ei's backstory and the stuff with his power limiters was revealed in the manga that followed after XIV's release. SNK should've put more of that in XIV instead of the manga...which was an adaptation that wasnt 100% in lockstep with the actual story. They did run with the stuff with Shun'ei, as we saw in XV, but doing it rather late kinda hurt his presentation amidst his debut.

Shun'ei is most likely the reason why my dislike against character design KZitemrs grew rapidly, although the dislike was already there to begin with. As an artist, I never really agreed much with what the other KZitemrs say in design and when it came to Shun'ei... yeah, I went on a silent Dislike frenzy. I don't know why, but Shun'ei clicked with me very deeply the moment he came out in KOFXIV. I really thought he was cool. And like I have said before in many other Social Media, we Shun'ei fans exist (as an endangered species, lol). We just don't have big name KZitemrs who come out and gush over Shun'ei's design to influence the masses. And yeah, I am pretty bitter about SNK's decision to not market Shun'ei as Protagonist of XIV. If there's anything I am proud of KOF fans for, it's generally being welcoming of new Protagonists... whether from the start, begrudingly, or slowly over time. Then again, I was thinking of Street Fighter and how they barely moved with their saga, lol. So, thanks KOF for pushing things along and not waiting for anyone.

I don't know if going the path of a trilogy or tetralogy or even a pentalogy will be needed for Shun'ei's case, especially considering that KOF (or any modern fighting games for that matter) isn't made yearly for a long time. If they want to transition the story to be more focused on Amplified Specters being created despite the destruction of Otoma=Raga, they can do so. They can definitely do more main stories that coincide with the "main story" for future installments of KOF.

I agree, but the primary focus of this was looking at his history as the main protagonist. If they develop him well in a lesser role come the next portion of the story, it'll be good to see...but it would also have me thinking "where was this when he was 'The Main Guy'?".

@@ameernurhaqeem9738 I'll believe it when I see it. Giving Shun'ei another arc after closing out one (allegedly) makes no sense. If he has more story to tell...dont end the arc. Also this arc was NOT mostly about Verse. Verse was a plot device to bring back dead characters. Thats it. Verse took a backseat in XV and now they finally developed Shun but also brought in Otoma=Raga who again...doesnt have much story to her. This is far from the first time SNK has abandoned arcs. There are still storylines from arcs WAAAAY back in the day that have been left with no conclusion...from the Dragon Spirit arc to the where Ash Crimsons flames came from.

I don't totally dislike Shun'ei core design, the cape-like jacket in particular is the element that I prefer (Ky Kiske in GG Strive has something similar and that's one of the reasons I love his redesign), but the tie, the left pants leg stirred up and those damn earpod are ruining that core; I think that the main reason because recent new fighting game flagship characters are not working (yes, I'm talking about you, Luke!) is because company and their designer focus on what (young) people like instead focusing on what THEY, as designer, want to create and rapresent; just think of Terry Bogard, probabily the best fighting game character design ever made: he's wearing normal stuff, in a normal way and still is iconic and loved after 30 years.

Shun'ei's design is all right. He doesn't dress like a standard archetype. His clothes are suppose to against normal fashion(a fashion that is based off of a chinese fashion) mixed with a anime school asthetic? I do think the story mode was that hurt him the most. Also kof14's haters that assume everything related to 14 is crap. He was meant to appeal to the asian market so thats fine. I get sick of the kof fandom crying about new characters when a new gen starts.

@@TheChrisLotus The hate for KOF14 was incredibly ignorant. It got directed at the entire game as a whole. I think what bugs me about Shun is the character dissonance that he produces in me. No way in hell someone this calmed, reserved, humble would dress this way. Like sugar punch said, if he was a male Athena, that would pretty much fix the dissonance and females fans can have some tasty k-pop references there. Take a look at Isla to confirm this theory. People love Isla, you know why? Because she's a foul mouthed brat that grew in the streets and does graffiti. That's the personality of someone who would dress this way and it shows (like, even non matching socks). If I was a SNK developer and was given the chance to redesign Shun for KOF XVI (?) I would try and bring that more reserved side of him that also has a healthy connection with his k-pop/street fashion references. Something along the lines of how Vega's costume was designed in street fighter duel. You'd still have a protagonist that at least is not an arsehole in some way and you get to keep all his lore and stuff. But what do I know? I'm just a person behind a computer

I will say that even though I dislike Shun Ei, and honestly think he, Isla, and Dolores don't really fit KOF. I do think he is hated too much, and do think he deserved better. This video is well done and fair examination of Shun Ei. He definitely showed growth within KOF XV but it's not highlighted enough or focused on enough to get me completely invested though that applies to alot of SNK's characters who imo have grown extremely stale over the years the Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury characters, Kyo and Iori, all of Team K' and that in large part does kinda have to do with KOF's story. Inverse's review was absolute garbage, but I do agree that SNK's method of story telling is outdated. Now I don't think they need to go to the extent of what NRS does, but a step up in that department would be nice. Hell they do show flashes of it in XV. Now if this indeed is the last game in Shun Ei's arc then while it is too little, too late I still would like to see him in the next game and rework the character more rather then giving up on him.

People forget that the king of fighters community used to hate the previous saga protagonists of KoF except for Kyo and even then. The original king of Fighters game was thought to be shine light around the protagonists from Fatal Fury’s Terry Bogard and Art of fightings Ryo Sakazaki as SNKs biggest crossover game ever. And that part is true. But the sagas didn’t focus on those characters. Each saga has its central focused character there. Like JoJo bizarre adventure type pattern of protagonists. So K, Ash Crimson and Kyo were hated initially upon release. And even they could’ve been written better. But game logic dictates all and complex story and character is thrown aside. If there’s a new saga for the King of Fighters, I guarantee you. You would like Shun Ei more, and hate the next protagonist of that saga.
@TheChrisLotus

The thing is...I dont "hate" Shun'ei and your "guarantee" falls flat when you have next to no idea of what qualities I find appealing about a protagonist...thus your "guarantee" is more "conjecture" at least in regards to the only person I can speak 100% for...at that is myself. I just feel SNK wrote and marketed him poorly and sloppily. The final thing I literally said was he "deserves better". Kyo nor K' werent NEARLY as despised as Ash Crimson was, but there was a method to Ash's madness and the pay off was worth something in the end. SNK didnt shy away from establishing Kyo, K' or Ash being their main guy. SNK waited until the 2nd game of the current arc to say hes a "bonafide protagonist".

I could be a hardcore Shun'ei fanboy and I would've still made this video and held the same beliefs/points...because Im not afraid to critique something even if I love it. Im a huge fan of Mai and yet Ive also criticized how SNK hasnt done anything special with her since XIII. Alice is easily one of my Top 3 favorite characters in KOF XIV, but I can also bite the bullet and admit that maybe trying to sell her as DLC in XV isnt the best move seeing she was not super over with the fans to warrant that.

In my opinion, their big mistake was to take a character that is meant to represent some niche Chinese fashion trend and give him the spotlight in franchise that has fans literally on the other side of the planet. They should have given him some modernized traditional Chinese clothing like they gave Benimaru and Athena. That fits the KOF design style better and it is way more likely to be accepted by people from other cultures.

Shun'ei overhated underrated undertreated. Maybe SNK didn't want a chinese guy to be the main protagonist and certainly not so popular either. If u take a look at current animes u certainly see its the tendency to have chinese characters badly portrayed. So 1 dont put him as MC at first, 2 makes a shitty design of him, 3 be sure to confirm it has bad reception from it, and then keep it unchanged 4 the next game, 4 nerf him to be sure he stays in the shadows in XV becoz him being overused in XIV tournaments was unplanned, 5 close his saga for good once he becomes MC as soon as possible (1 game only), 6 get rid off him immediately sarting next kof(XVI) claiming his unpopularity as the reason. Everything was planned to have him doomed from the start.
