if we can do it, i think our generation’s ability to not let these things harden our hearts, but rather make them softer, might be what sets us apart from previous generations and their failings. not being complacent or falling into the “that’s just how things are” mindset is a skill that’ll help us create change over time

Ever since I turned 18 (which was almost 3 weeks ago already! The time really does fly) I just can’t stop crying. I thought my needs as a human being would be met by now but I have yet to get to where I want to be. Things have gone to shit for me in general since Covid. I feel so burnt out and tired all the time. I thought I’d be in therapy by now and have a drivers license but I’m no where near achieving both those things. And for the first time ever I feel like my beliefs r so different from my family. I think they’re automatically siding with Israel as they’re very Jewish and I feel so weird abt it cuz. They’re all just like “did u hear what happened in Israel” and I just wanna say “did u hear how many innocent people they’ve killed (so far 😢)” but I don’t have the guts. And a couple days ago I actually cried abt the war knowing how many innocent people and animals are dying and suffering. With the situation I’m in I can’t donate or anything cuz I genuinely don’t feel safe to. Lots of people feel at peace knowing they can’t control or do anything but I’m the exact opposite. I feel so powerless and want to help the poor families and animals but can’t 💔

So it's okay to want to change them, but don't burnout trying to move a mountain alone. One if the things that help me is recognizing that there is community in wanting change and it's okay not to be "on" 25/8. Whether it's for religious reasons or the fact that they don't like what Israel has been doing to Palestinians. Forced removal and displacement. Stealing their land and property. Gathering them up in sections and then killing them. Sound familiar? Also, Israel has created a lot of animosity between not only palestinians but other arab nations, akin to the USA to Muslims and arab nations, against itself that Jewish people will not be safe while it continues on committing these atrocious acts. Israel equates israel with Jewish people. That is dangerous.

You bring up the point that people shouldn’t be expected to save the world on their own. I think part of the problem is that we, as Gen Z, we’re told so often that we are going to be the ones to save the world, and are never told _how_ we’re meant to do that, so it just gradually became an individual problem as opposed to a collective one. About a year ago on Twitter, I vividly remember someone responding to something like what you said - “take breaks if and when you need to but don’t forget to come back” - with something that just was railing against it, and in the middle, she said something like “We are trying to stop a genocide”. I remember that part be so much of what you said here is echoing what most of the quote tweets said then - “You’re going to destroy yourself if this is how you view activism” I’ve been thinking about that person a lot recently and hoping they’re okay

In terms of the whole ‘celebs won’t save us’, yes by all means I agree. But, I have to be honest with myself as a Palestinian, I can no longer support those who can’t even speak up about the loss of my people’s lives (almost 10000 at this point), especially the ones that were super vocal during the BLM and Stop Asian Hate movements. And don’t get me wrong, I love that they supported these movements, but where’s that energy for Palestinians? Who have been under apartheid rule for 75 years?? Their silence just shows how little they value our lives and that shit hurts, so I think it’s within my right to exit stage left when they remain silent, or give an all lives matter statement. I’ve been specifically really let down by certain activists who I regarded quite highly (Blair Imani and Alok Vaid-menon in particular), I had to unfollow after 3 weeks of complete silence on the topic, I couldn’t give them the benefit of the doubt anymore. This whole thing has just reallllyyyyy shifted so much for me, as a privileged Palestinian living in the west. I’ve unfollowed so many people I’ve followed for years these past three weeks. Their presence on my feed just became too triggering.

If we keep saying "this won't happen in our life time" or "change takes a lot of time" then that is exactly what will happen. Those BS "beliefs" is why we are still not experiencing liberation. The reason we will never see it is that attitude. We could change things in our lifetime, if we were grounded in love and more brave and courageous. The best thing you can do, is heal your own community. We have people right here in our own neighborhoods being genocide. Stop the genocide in your own community first, that is how you can really help. Create dual power and become independent from the system.

I've been watching a lot of 'Star Wars Rebels' after work in the last few weeks and there's this quote from Season 2 by Leia Organa that said "I feel that because I can fight, I have to, for those who cannot" and it really hit home with recent events and spreading awareness. Thank you for sharing the sentiment 💜

The timing of this video was so great for myself personally. I’ve got sucked in to the doom of it all and recently saw a post that said “the goal is to get you to focus on the things you can’t change instead of the things you can”. And hearing you say all this just really brought it all home. Thanks for all you do. Continue being a light! ❤

I wanna share this with my therapist but she might get jealous that you've said exactly the same stuff she's been telling me for months, and I think you finally phrased it in a way that seems to be working much better to stick in my mind. Thank you. People are people. Love for all. I have hope for the future and the people living 200 years from now.

thank you for this. after calling my reps and attending rallies, i have been looking for more to read on Palestine. i won't allow myself to "move on" in the next few months whether or not protests and calls for action are still happening. my friends in my grad program have been taking the time to educate me. but "non-academic" friends and my partner do not seem to be aware of how wide-scale this violence is and the history of the occupation. when i try to talk to them, they tell me, "there's only so much you can do" which is true to an extent however I'm having a hard time with what i think is their passivity and managing my expectations.

I get this struggle. My partner is a smart person, and very passionate. However, the history, both past and present, of certain conflicts can be difficult for them to get behind. We both knew when we got together 15 years ago that was one of the ways we differ. So it has been a bit of a struggle for us. They have had to learn when they HAVE to listen, even for a few minutes because sometimes this stuff weighs so heavy on my head and heart, I feel like I could drown, and I have had to learn when I need to lay off because I'm pulling them under with me.

One thing I like to remember is that there's always people already doing the work. It's not about reinventing the wheel and figuring out how to solve everything from scratch, but rather finding the ppl doing the work and figuring out how you can contribute. Also, no individual can pour their full focus into every single cause... I've heard it's better to put the majority of your focus into one thing long-term and trust that other ppl are focusing on the other things you care about but aren't focusing on.

I think we need to be a lot more OK with people (including everyday people) in the internet not sharing an opinion on every political topic that ever comes up. I think a lot more harm can be done by people regurgitating an opinion they heard based on a 30s TikTok they watched (I HAVE seen this done, frequently, especially recently), than by people staying silent. And I think it's OK too for people to say "I am not well-informed enough on this topic to feel like I should share an opinion on it." Or you can say something simple like "It is awful to see civilians dying/refugees be turned away/rise in intolerant beliefs, and this should not be happening" without sharing an extreme stance or condemning a country or group outright. Maybe after researching you'd come to that stance anyway but at least you would have come to it responsibly. Politics are COMPLICATED. It's OK not to know everything about everything. And please have done your own research (looking at both sides of an issue, from verified sources) before sharing an opinion. I think some situations are certainly more straight-forward than others, but it's always a good idea to do research before spreading potentially false information.

That being said, I think it's generally good to support charities and groups dedicated to helping citizens in areas affected by war, violence, disease, etc.. Citizens aren't usually complicit in violence (at least in wars; in attacks on minority groups they can be but then we can support the minority groups to survive and escape or whatever they may need).

I've been calling my representatives everyday and some of them are getting aggressive - they dont like to hear the truth . Still, I wont stop calling. I cant attend protests and Instagram wont let me post but I still do what I can. This is hard and I have definitely been depressed and out of sync, but I still do what I can. Thanks Kadija for your words. I appreciate you.

Thanks for this. A lot of “coping” sounds like common sense, but it’s easy to forget when you’re suddenly in the dumps. And I appreciate the reality check regarding “activism”… we must take care of ourselves first, but when we are capable, it’s time to put in the real work.

also the bits about change & generations/time… it can be discouraging to not bring progress to fruition in our own time, but like those before us, we have to persist nonetheless-else nothing would have and will not get better. i’m trying to learn compassion for the future i won’t experience myself

you're not a bad person for not being consumed with grief and anxiety or whatever else over the world's problems. the internet has plenty of people who will make you feel that you are a bad person, they'll straight up say it, but their opinion of who you are is not fact. you can understand something is terrible and hope it doesn't get worse, but you don't HAVE to feel debilitated by it. you've probably got plenty of your own problems to focus on. if helping out in a cause is something you really want to do, do it! but if you don't or can't, it is okay to not be torn up inside over the tragedy in the world. if you do nothing to alleviate/aid in said problem then feeling miserable over it is a free way to brutalize yourself for nothing more than living up to an abstract concept of what makes you a Good Person

I’ve just become aware of you through my Daughters account. I was switching back to mine and ran across you as one of her “Real Shit” choices in her Library. I can’t tell you how glad I am that I did! I’m one of those people who have had depression problems, and was told, by my doctor that I should avoid the news. While listening to you, even though you spared no information, it seemed more palatable. You’re wicked smart and soooo easy to watch. I thank you for showing me a lot about things that I have avoided, in a kinder, gentler manner. While the World and its people still amaze me at its brutality, you soften the blows for me. Thank you…

I really wish as a whole, we should stop prioritizing the opinions of celebrities. People push them to speak on issues just to get upset over what they say. In reality being a good actor or streamer doesn’t automatically mean you have great opinions on things. I’ve always found the argument that if you have a platform you should speak out a short sighted.

Been doing a lot of organising and trying to explain the importance of being proactive with our activism and demands to keep up momentum once the media moves on. It's exhausting work and honest to God was feeling so hopeless when I opened up KZitem. Was just gonna try and find something to switch my brain off to but instead I watched this and I'm feeling at peace in myself, inspired to keep going, and conscious of the attitude I need to adopt to keep up momentum. Do it for the future, even if I don't live to see the change. Thank you Khadija
