Been fighting this problem for a few years now, finally swapped out the motors a couple weeks ago. I sure could have used this video then. It would have saved a lot of time, but by the 4th motor swap it was only taking about 15 minutes a door. First door took a little over an hour. Tim - I picked up my first T4R a couple of weeks ago and have been going through a number of your video tutorials. Decided to tackle this one first. The vehicle came without a key fob so did not notice the bad door lock actuators right away. After installing a Viper alarm system last week, I noticed both front door locks were operating intermittently. Spent a few hours at the local pick a part practicing on taking out the actuators and salvaging a few extra clips. Ordered the motors from your link and received them today. Pulled the actuators, replaced the motors, and put it all back together (the salvaged clips came in handy), The locks are working perfectly. Much appreciated!

Great video! Really informative. Im struggling so much with the exterior door handle latch it’s crazy how easy you did yours. EDIT: My issue with the “german helmet” was when i applied pressure to it the plastic tab on the exterior door handle would flex. I used a small knipex channel lock to squeeze the “german helmet” and the plastic tab that holds it. Popped out real easy.

Yeah, I bet this guy is basically doing what we show in the video. Some lock modules are more complicated than others. I recently tried to fix a 1st Gen Tacoma one but the motor is a bit different and the module is more complicated. So, I failed at fixing the Tacoma module but I haven't given up hope for an affordable fix for those as well. I just need to do a bit more research on it and hopefully I'll figure it out. I actually did this repair on my '02 SR5 a few months back. The 00-02 has a different mechanism on the locks to sense their position and to lock/unlock them. My advice is to be careful in that area, cuz i broke my front passenger off and had to hunt down a replacement sensor/harness. Definitely worth doing though, especially for all 4 doors. Yields a very crisp and positive lock/unlock.

@@ryanrice advice? hmm.. try to remove the vapor barrier completely while keeping the butyl as clean as possible. itl stay cleaner and easier to reattach if you just take it off entirely. get a cheap set of trim tools. itl help to not break those old push clips. if you do break some, you can buy new ones or find them in salvage yards. dont manhandle the handle too much, as its just plastic. its not the end of the world if the non cosmetic side cracks a bit, just dont break it. roll the window up before you start and dont be afraid to get your whole arm in there, theres nothing too dangerous.

I haven't done this project, my locks are still working, but when I do someday I think I will consider sealing the door lock unit shut with large shrink-tube and a heat gun. Either that or else some special tape that is resistant to heat/cold and water, but the shrink tube could be removed without leaving any residue, which is what I like about it. It's not hard to figure out what size shrink tube to buy, but you would need to know the measurements of the door lock unit first. Since the door lock unit isn't precisely square, the best bet for shrink-tube to work would be if it is 2:1 shrink ratio instead of 1.5:1, (I think those are the common ratio's but it's been a while). You can also make a tube out of some paper to see what fits over the device, without much slack. I haven't tried it, not sure it will work, but if it does I think it would be swell, (if you want to be able to be able to service it again someday), so I thought I would throw the idea out there.

Hey Andrew, thanks for the nice compliment. I don't know if you can easily separate the harness that leads to door lock actuator from the main body harness. Great Video. I needed to reprogram a new fob on a 99 , which included locking and unlocking the door multiple times. During that unsuccessful procedure, the door would not completely unlock, which I believe is due to this part weakening. I avoided this job for numerous reasons, but not have some confidence! I'm just wondering...with all this work involved, and potential hassle of re-work, due to a failed part, wouldn't this be one of those times to bite the bullet an pay the $140 for the oem real part....for piece of mind. I understand every $ counts and for some it's not an option, but I with all the mods and maintenance, it stinks to re-do something so tedious. Just my .02

That door actuator mechanism is very simple device from what you saw in the video. 99% of the time, the failure is going to be with that little RC motor. If you crack open the case carefully, get the motor in and the case either glued or ziptied back together securely, you will succeed with this repair and save yourself quite a bit of money. It's really not that difficult of a job. Just like anything, it's the learning curve of doing it for the first time that makes it take longer. If for some reason you had to do it again, you would be able to do it much quicker a second time. So, I think you should just replace the motor and save yourself some money. Good luck and Happy Wrenching!

I have a similar problem with my 3rd Gen. although, my locks can get stuck and won’t open. I can feel alot of tension between the key and the lock. And the lock will even kinda slightly move but you can feel it never turns all the way. So even with the key, it won’t budge. But it will usually lock and unlock no problem when I’m driving. But continuously locking and unlocking too close together causes them to not want to work even though I can hear them and they slightly move. This is a bad problem for me as I have some kind of weird aftermarket alarm system. And I usually have to end up using the back gate to get in, and it causes the alarm to go off

Maybe it's something with that driver door lock. I'm pretty sure that one communicates with the others. If it isn't working correctly, the others follow suit. Very interesting on demonstrating how the door lock and unlock. I have a 2000 4 runner limited and it does none of what you show. I press the unlock button once only the driver side unlock. Two more times and all doors including the rear hatch unlock. However, when I get inside and turn the engine or start to drive it doesn't automatically lock the doors for me. Same goes for when I turn off the engine. It doesn't unlock. Would you happen to know why these features are not in my year model? I have a bmw and you would have to flash the cpu at the dealer to customized these locking features along with how you would like the windows to automatically roll up or down. Not sure if it's the same procedure with Toyotas. By the way, the actuator is working fine with no problems. Thanks for the writeup. Also: This is what happens when I armed the vehicle while inside and try to get out. All the doors will automatically lock and not giving me the chance to get out without having the remote and disarming the alarm. Kind of like a death trap. Similar to bmw's death trap alarm you would hear on the news. Yes, this is a stock alarm that came from the factory. Off topic but just throwing it out for info.

Timmy, for someone putting out a video on this you don't seem to know much about it! The door lock actuators are as cheap as $4.00 each on Amazon, depending on the year, door, etc.so there's no need to mess with the motors or try to rebuild them. Also the action of the key fob can be programmed to open either the drivers door or all the doors depending on your preference. Since the plastic door panel clips always break you should buy a bag of new ones on Ebay before starting, no need to try harvesting old ones from the junk yard since most of them will break when you try to take them out.

Hmmm. Well Steve, I have no problem with people sharing information and even showing me up if it means a better or more affordable way to do something. You said you can buy the door actuators for $4.00. Ok, provide a link then so people can benefit from your knowledge. If you can't provide the link, it doesn't help anyone and I will basically think you're full of you know what. I wasn't aware of how to reprogram the key fob but maybe Sean knows how to do this. As for buying door clips, I suppose you can buy some, but since we were at a PicknPull learning about how to do this job, we grabbed some door clips and the other rod clips while we were there and they didn't charge for them. By the way, none of the door clips broke on the interior door panels we pulled off. So, while you have the right to think I don't know much about this job, I have the right to disagree since I just showed people how to fix their OEM door actuator for $7.50. So, until you can produce a link to a 3rd Gen door actuator for $4.00, I'll just keep to my original thought that your'e talking out of you know what.

So Dude, if you're going to show me up, you're going to have to do much better than this. I did look up some 4runner actuators on Amazon and I did see one as little as $15 which is still double what I spent to fix the door actuator. Then there's the question of how well an aftermarket actuator will last. I'm actually going to use a Chinese aftermarket lock assembly replacement for a 1st Gen Tacoma and fingers crossed it lasts a long time. Finding a replacement motor for a 1st Gen Tacoma door lock actuator has been problematic. Toyota must have had them specially made.

We agree that the clip for the exterior door handle rod is a pain to deal with. On my rig and the rigs we practiced with at the wrecking yard, we were able to free the rod from the clip without releasing the door handle. Coming in from the access hole with a small pry bar and putting pressure on the end of the rod worked to pop it free of the clip. But, your technique is good for anyone who experiences difficulty and is worried about cracking the door handle since it's made of plastic.

Hey Sarah, there's a very good chance your actuator might be able to be fixed like we show in this video but we don't have experience with 5th Gen 4runner door actuators so no guarantee. I imagine the reason for the high price is Toyota doesn't sell the actuator separately anymore and you have to buy the whole lock assembly. I would go to your local Toyota dealership parts department and ask them if they sell just the actuator or do you have to buy the whole lock assembly. There might be aftermarket suppliers selling the lock assemblies on Ebay or Amazon and you'll just have to do a search to find out.

Are the different colored clips for the door lock rods all the same size? This amazon listing has some white and yellow clips, but not the blue, green, or pink ones. They are not all the same and they are directional too. I would suggest just getting them from Toyota unless you can confirm what you are getting is right for this job. You could also do what we did and grab some clip off a wrecked rig at a PicknPull.

It uses the same replacement motors. Actuator housing is not the same as the other doors. - Sean
