I wish more locksmiths would do this. I call it "total door evaluation". I first check the hing screws like you did, paying attention to the top hinge. I use longer screws too to draw it up. Many times this is the only fix needed, plus lube the locks as a general practice. I never work on a lock without lubing it. Your customers love how the door works when you do this.

I was worried about the suggestion to permanently modifying the strike plate but he did go over the main issues to address for the cause of misalignment which imo is the real fix. Occasionally a doorway has so much settling or warpage that modifying the plate may be necessary but there are also strike plates that are oversize that will allow you to totally reposition the plate and still look factory made as it will cover the original mortising. Thanks for sharing.

The longer screws are a good idea, but if the strike is not hitting the strike plate correctly, check your reveal around your door. Also, check the reveal across the top of the door. You can put shims behind the hinges and move the door in any direction. If the reveal on both sides and across the top is even, the strike will hit the strike plate correctly. The door jamb might have settled and may need to be wedged up. Don't move or grind on the strike plate. It is possible that the door or jamb was hung incorrectly. Sorry about complaining, but what you are describing is not your department. Sounds like the job for a carpenter. Sorry again, contact me if I can help.

I wouldn't put really long screws into the jamb as they would come out The other side into the gib groove if it's set up that way. Probably be ok if the jamb is flush with the gib but then you will be into the framing which might cause the door frame to move as you tighten the screws. Screws that are as long as the jamb is thick will suffice. It's ok to put longer screws into the door though.

I concede your fix will work however as my limited understanding goes, generally speaking doors at one time did latch properly and something changed. As that goes, it seems best to fix the actual problem instead of doing the Band-Aid repair. And the band aid repair may be the best thing to do in cases where you don't have the skills to actually fix the problem the right way. I for one understand that doors are much more complex than people realize.
@S.E.Locksmith

I like the way you think And it’s true it’s always best to fix the root of the problem instead of making a shortcut... this video and the method that I use are for an average person without a lot of skills on doors alignment and how to fix those things as a professional, long story short if you trying to save some money and do-it-yourself so this video will definitely help you out do it like I do it when I need to install new door hardware and things are not aligned as they should be. To be honest I’m not a Door Expert and I’m not installing doors or fix doors I’m a professional locksmith and I know a thing or two about door reinforcement and door locks in all aspects. And just so you know there is no perfect method of fixing issues like that sometimes the longer it takes the more complicated it becomes so to do small shortcuts are not always the wrong way!

@S.E.Locksmith

I was talking about the hinges in this video, what are you talking about?!
@Daishar
3 жыл бұрын
@@S.E.Locksmith once you affix the hinges properly with the longer screws as you did to fix some sag, you can adjust the bend on the door side of the hinge pin join that all hinges have to not be bound on the top and bottom hinge by pulling the pin and using either the special tool for it or even an ajustable wrench which is basically the same tool. You can bend to either spread the hinge to push that part of the door away from the frame, or squeeze it to pull the door closer and fine tune the fitment and gap of the door. Not all hinges have exactly the same bend from the factory, so even on new hinges on a new install that should be done to make sure the door hangs properly, but definitely on a sagging door it will help to re-align it properly and get it closing like it used to.

This is NOT a good way to fix this problem. This removes necessary metal that the manufacturer has used for better strength and security. The proper way is to remove latch plate, fill screw holes with toothpicks or other small pcs of wood and relocate the screws and plate just to the outer edge of original screw holes. This allows door to latch, keeps plate intact and keeps metal bits from flying into your eyes/face.

This fix is the fastest way to do it and it takes minutes to do... what you’re talking about is way way longer and time consuming. It doesn’t lower anything from the strike plate security as long as it being done properly just to better latch the door.

@@S.E.Locksmith but correct. If the latch plate has the tab that's bent into the hole, I don't recommend grinding it. If just a flat plate I guess it would be ok. I've been in home repairs and remodeling over 45 yrs and from experience I don't recommend halfassing stuff. It usually costs more in the long run. It also doesn't take longer when you have what you need right there. Would take a while to find that burr, if you don't have one.

I'm not a locksmith, but I do fix doors across my employer's 30 buildings anytime something goes wrong. Based on what I've learned doing this over the years, it seems to me you skipped an intermediate step in your tutorial here. After checking that the hinge screws were tight, why wouldn't you try shimming the hinge before going the destructive route of shaving the strike? I've rarely met a door sag (on a multi hinge door) that wasn't fixed with a shim or two and I haven't had to shave a strike in at least 7 or 8 years since learning about shimming.

Like you said you are not a locksmith! This fixing method is the fastest way to properly adjust the strike plate without spending time on all the other ways to do it like you described... and I’m not saying that using shim is not good it’s only take longer than the way I do it as a locksmith. Have a great day

Where does the shim go, between hinge and door frame?
