The sinking of the Royal Oak in October 1939 led to the building of the Churchill Barriers; an incredible feat of engineering which protected Scapa Flow from entry from the East and connected previously separate islands by road. Built from 1940 by Balfour Beatty employees with the help of Italian POWs, the barriers were officially opened on the 12th of May 1945 and are still in use today, For more information see our 2020 blog post:
