Pizza Cats was a weird case where it was only really big in the west. IN japan it is a fairly unremarkable kids henshin show and most of the zany elements are par for the course. IN the west they never got any of the script translations so they had to turn the entire thing into a parody.
@wafflekd-f5o
5 жыл бұрын
@RXdash78 I would like to add some more info about it, if you don't mind. While the Pizza Cats was turned more into a parody of itself when it was dubbed in English, the Japanese version had some of humor through out (but not as much as the adaptation). The humor in here was different than the one in the dub in that it has a different cultural context. Without going into detail, humor from a Japanese perspective usually tends to have puns or slapstick, or even both. The dub extends it by using pop culture references and fourth wall breaks that poke fun the zaniness of it's premise. Not only was the humor changed, but the Pizza Cats were originally ninjas before being changed into samurai (I believe that was made to seperate the cofusion from the Ninja Turtles). As someone who was born after it’s inital run and never saw the show before, I was baffled on how often the narrator talked, but as I watched a few more episodes, I started to notice how self-aware the show went.

Funny enough prior to Gundam Wing they did release the Mobile Suit Gundam movie trilogy in the US on VHS in 1998, it's basically a retelling of the original series and even consists largely of footage from the original series. Just to note the movies had been released in Japan much earlier in 1981.

Thank you for sharing your recap on Doozy bots! Your channel is always amazing. Gundam wing was the series I first watched on Cartoon Network. I don’t think this series looks terrible, but some concepts clearly need to be changed and redefined. It’s also interesting that one of the main heroes was a Cheerleader, since not only are the main pilot characters usually boys, but also Gundam has so many dark themes in it. I don’t think that anyone would want to be a Cheerleader in that dimension! The animation looks very cool.

In Japan they got this sick show about “realistic” giant robots that is actually this really deep story about the cost war, what it means to be a hero, the dangers of an arms race, child soldiers, oppression and racism, and if there ever actually can be a “good” side in war. There was actually an earlier attempt to bring Gundam to the US back in 1983. A Hollywood live-action film loosely based on the original 0079 series was scripted and both designs and concept art were created by Syd Mead, with the film intended to use CG for the Gundam and other Mobile Suits in a manner not dissimilar to The Last Starfighter. The film never got past the planning stages, but Syd Mead did return to the Gundam franchise a decade and a half later as the lead mecha designer for Turn-A Gundam.

The problem with showing faithfully adapted and translated anime back in the '80s was *not* that there was no audience for it, which was the reasoning that TV execs insisted on clinging to for some reason. It was that those execs just absolutely to realize that kids were *hungry* for animated shows that had mature, fairly realistic storytelling and didn't talk down to them. You would have thought that the love us kids of the time showed for stuff like Robotech and Akira, with fantastic science-fiction situations that nevertheless still portrayed the genuinely tragic results of war and violence, would have forced them to wake up and realize a lot earlier than they did, but nope! The Animation Age Ghetto held firm simply because the people calling the shots were the kind of bean-counting empty suits who didn't give a flying fig about animation and therefore had no clue, and couldn't have cared less, about what made for a good animated show. To them, there was simply no difference between a show like *"Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!"* and *"Super Dimension Fortress Macross"*, and they simply couldn't even comprehend why anyone would consider one of the shows to be any different than the other; they were both "just cartoons" and so, to their minds, that meant they just *had* to be interchangeable kiddie garbage. Simply because they were both animated. Good American animated shows like Batman: The Animated Series created a nice crack in the wall in the US by showing that sophisticated animated stories could be created, but it really took Cartoon Network to give anime room to breathe and grow in the US, by putting some control into the hands of people who could distinguish between what was actually good and what was garbage because they genuinely *loved* animation, allowing them to pick and choose anime they themselves actually knew to be good and build the Toonami block out of it. Unfortunately, the glory days of the '80s and '90s OVAs are long gone, and far too much of the anime we get today is way, *way* overly self-referential, over the top meta-injokes about everything, to the point that a lot of current anime plays out as self-parody. (Not to mention the atrocious animation styles so many current anime series use. Look at Dragon Ball Super as an example... but not the poor animation *quality*, which can be explained away as a result of the ridiculously tight schedule of the show, and it got much better as the team gained experience. No, I'm talking about the frankly *ugly* design work, full of angular, jagged, flat character designs that look like they came straight out of a coloring book. Compare those character designs to the flowing, detailed, shaded design work of Vegeta Arc era Dragon Ball Z, when characters had actual curves to them instead of being composed of nothing but sharp angles, hard points, and static, immobile, plastic-looking hair. Nowadays every character looks like it was designed primarily as a simple outline so it could be colored in with autofill tools on a computer.

I bet Saint Seiya would've been a smash hit if they had gave it the Voltron treatment in 1988...or sometime in the mid 90s...but unfortunately it was in 2003 that the first attempt(s) happened. I waited for years to see a show and bought a boot leg vhs of a zeta gundam episode. It wasn't until wing hit that it really took off. All japan needed to do is just dub the regular show and it would have been very successful. After all, the evil harmony gold (weirdly specific, deal with it. :D) was successful with robotech.

I’ve had these sort of deformed, exaggerated Gundam figures for what seems like a couple of decades now, but never kept the packaging and couldn’t remember what version they were from. Just thought they were cool designs, even though I never really latched onto any of the shows. I watched Gundam Wing but only finished it on DVD because I’m a completist; the dragged out, repetitious story-telling (50 eps, as I recall?) just did me in and confirmed that I just prefer anime movies (and their generally superior animation) to tv shows. Not that I haven’t sampled tons of shows since then, but i rarely finish them unless they’re short runs. But the origin of these toys has always eluded me, until (possibly) now, as I think they may have been tied to SD Gundam Force. Was there a line?
