For transferring it, do you just glue the other dop, leave it with both dops overnight and then heat the first dop? I'm guessing you have to be a bit careful there, especially with small stones?

yes, at about the 3 minute mark on this video, I show how to remove the stone. Basically the transfer is the same thing, but you'll have the dop you want to keep also under the wet paper towel side. The transfer is probably one of the most tedious parts of faceting in my opinion.

Hi Gilberto. I have started using super glue instead of dop wax: kzitem.info/news/bejne/qnebn5Wkn5uaaag I placed a link in the description of that video showing which glue I am using. For most stones, I have found it to be easier to work with.

Great video, what are the metal dip sticks (brand name)? I’ve used that gel glue to dip before but only on wood dipsticks, then had to use jeweller saw to cut off and file the thin sliver of wood off before polishing the stones underside.

The dop sticks I am using are so old, they are probably not sold any more. They came with this old faceting table. But you can also get new ones from different faceting shops online like Cutting Edge Supply

what if the supper glue does not apply to the the stone after 1 day? Same glue?
@earthartgems
5 ай бұрын
several possible causes: I've found if the glue is old, it looses effectiveness. I've also had better luck if I vigorously shake the bottle before each use... I am not sure why, as it does not seem to need to be mixed... If it is too cold, it will not cure very quickly. If there is any oil on the stone (like from your hands) it will not adhere well. make sure to clean the stone surface. if none of those work, and you're using the same glue as I am in the video, then try a different glue, buy a different bottle of the same glue, or switch to wax.

Where do you get the metal drop sticks?

The dop sticks that I have here I inherited from my grandpa along with the table and machine. This is an older MDR setup. Most machines will either take "keyed" or non-keyed dops with a 6.25mm (1/4" shank) but you'll want to double check your machine. The key is a flat side of the dop that helps with positioning and preventing rotation. There are quite a few online websites that sell them. I strongly urge anyone buying a set to get a quality set, which can cost upwards of a few hundred dollars. If a dop is bent or not perfectly squared off at the end, then it will just cause frustration down the road. So avoid those tempting deals on ebayt, amazon and temu as you get what you pay for. many of the best dops are actually made by facetors who have a machine shop create their dops and they also sell them. Common materials are aluminum, Stainless steel and brass. The softer metals wont damage your lap if they should come into contact with the lap during cutting. This site makes what might be one of the worlds best faceting machines along with dops: www.ultratec-facet.com/product-category/lapidary-supplies/dops/ I hope that helps. I think it will also help answer your other question.

is possible to use super glue but with methyl acetate vs ca ?
@earthartgems
10 ай бұрын
The main drawback of a methyl acetate over the CA type glue is that the MA type is more water soluble at room temperature and becomes more so as the temperature rises. CA type is also soluble to water, but it takes a lot longer. this is a problem as you do not want the stone to loosen as you cut it due to the water coolant. I also want to point out that regardless of how you dop it, the denatured alcohol can remove the stone without heat if you're willing to wait a day or so for it to dissolve the glue.

Would a normal lighter work for this? Also, are there any alternatives to superglue that have a good hold on the gem, and dry quickly and are easy to remove?

yes, that will work, or a candle. I prefer this as it is hotter. The traditional method of dopping is to use dopping wax. kzitem.info/news/bejne/z4Vo1qqZb5qhoH4
