Fantastic interview and great information! I started using the Heavy Duty system - actually, with a split very similar to Dorian's and I've busted through a terrible plateau I was dealing with. I had known about HIT for a very long time, and I just had always been told it was "bullshit" so I never tried.

Just wondering what your thoughts are on doing HIT along with feeder workouts for a hard to grow body part? So feeder workout like REALLY light weight and maybe hammer curls and skull crushers. 100 reps of each, superset both and one set after another for 3 sets. I've been doing them about a week now along with the usual 5 or 6 days a week. I get a great pump with feeders, but it seems like overkill long term.

I am not sure what Jay will say, but I can tell you even from a bodybuilding perspective it is not helpful. 5 years ago I was going through a really bad time, I wasn't able to see my son and was going through the family courts. During that time I discovered bodybuilding and in particular those old black and white videos of Dorian training with Leroy. It really helped my mindset and I just got in the zone and watched and read everything about Dorian, including his autobiography. I'll forever associate those difficult months with Dorian and it's come full circle now as I'm seeing my son regularly and we have a good relationship. I plan on getting him in the gym soon and watching this video has really brought a lot of emotions back.

@@khrsone9653 me personally I found it very helpful to strip back all the complications in my life: I threw unnecessary clothes and possessions out, I cut back on social interactions that weren't benefiting me ie the work group chat, or Facebook etc it took away pressure when I wasn't feeling great and I did really want people seeing me and me having to explain things... I took comfort in walking in nature, taking a sandwich and eating it in the park .. I got into mindfulness and some meditation... May sound weird to some but just 7-10 minutes a day of sitting quietly and breathing really helped. Working out and stretching also helped relax. The main thing was knowing that bad times never last. My dad, who passed away a exactly a year ago, at that time told me "God squeezes you sometimes, but he never chokes you" (rough translation from Spanish), and that stuck with me. I'm 43 and throughout my life the biggest hurts have been through being love sick, nothing hurts like when you really want a girl, but I learned through time to dust myself off and go again... And when you're fed up "don't give up, just rest"... All the best buddy, hope things pick up 👍

@@steelphantom9105I have been doing 2 warm up sets of 8 to 12 reps and then a working set (all with the slow cadence) to failure and then forced negatives where my partner will just hoist the weight up for me when I have no positive strength left until I have no negative strength left either. I also start with pro-fatiguing muscles so I start with flies for example, 2 warm up sets and then 1 working set and then I move on to flat bench for 2 warm up sets and then 1 working set to failure and then a set to failure with forced negatives for upper chest and same for lower. Then dips to failure, and tricep extensions to failure. Then back I do the same, 2 warm up sets and 1 working with forced negatives to failure and I do lat pulldowns, seated rows, and pullovers and I finish by hitting rear delts with bent over lateral raises. I then do preacher curls to failure and then same day I hit shoulders with seated military military presses to failure and side lateral raises. 2 warm ups and 1 set to failure with forced negatives to failure. For legs I do squats, hack squats, leg extensions, leg curls and calf raises. All with just 1 warm up set and then one set to failure. The cadence has been fantastic and has helped me gain a mind muscle connection I didn't have before. I hit all body parts 2 times per week. I use a combination of the Jay Vincent workout and the Dorian Yates blood and guts training and so far so good. I am trying to get a minimum of 200 grams of protein a day and I use creatine.

What I find interesting is people that question or have doubts about Hit training think that they are smarter than thier body just won't try it. Our muscles do a certain amount of processing or thinking for them selves so we don't have to. Like every thing else we do we have to figure out some of it our selves to help our muscles to achieve the easiest way to accomplish our goal. Some people talk to thier muscles but they never ask them what they need to get the job done. You can't dictate them into something they are not. Muscles have memory ; they might be smarter than you.

At 38:10, Dorian is talking about those computerised machines, a company called Ronfic makes them, too. I've used them and they're incredible. They do everything from time your rep cadence, to time your set, measure your force with each limb on every rep, measure progress. You can change the velocity of the positive or negative. For example I set my overhead press for 85 kgs in the positive and set it at 100kgs on the negative. The machine imparts the pressure a bit like a spotter pushing down on the bar. I still overdid myself with 3 workouts a week, but I pushed for another 20 years. :) Now I understand English enough to look up what I did wrong, and exactly, as Dorian and Mike Mentzer say, as you get stronger, you need to have longer rest periods.) And you have to put in the cycling, otherwise your nervous system will burn out after a while. :) So, what Dorian says here is a big confirmation for me that I am going in the right direction!

When I won, I weighed 169 at 8% at 5’10 36 years old in 1993 I was very stringy, and overtrained . Knowing now about training, I could have done much better and won other shows, I’m presently 205 at 66 , still train hard, but smart, hit works for me.

He’s brilliant but he keeps saying in his videos don’t train blood and guts if your natural. Stick to a 3 day a week split rather then a four. Something I have came to realise that these body builders are mostly talking to potential enhanced bodybuilders and not to the average Joe who’s got a job and isn’t on enhancements. Dorian explains that he did a 3 day a week split as a natural called the A and B split ran over 3 days over a 9 day period so your hitting each muscle twice over that 9 days. That means the frequency is upped. It’s confusing I wish they would do more videos on the wider audiences.

He trained chest/arms Legs Back/delts That was his split before the 4 day. Its in his books and journals and I like it better than PPL.

I like Dorians statement about Mikes advice. 1 or 2 sets to failure with the second set being just to hammer it in if the first set didn’t do it. This is something I do with bodyweight exercises at home. It’s definitely easier to tell when you’ve reached failure when the load is heavier, so I only use 1 set at the gym with heavier loads.

I used to do 2 sets to hammer it in like you said until I discovered that holding the failure point for as long as humanly possible and then fighting the negative until the muscle naturally gives out seems to work just as good. That gives me the "I feel like I really did something" satisfaction from the work out.

I like to do first set fairly high repetition and slow targeting slow muscle fibre. Last set more intense and power targeting all muscle and ligaments

@brucejensen3081 I do this I really like the feel , 1st set is positive failure in the higher rep range and second , with the same weight usually I fail between 6-8 with a partial for the last rep

@@drewmorg. yeah I think that’s definitely more efficient. Ive been struggling between 1 or 2 sets for a while seeing which works better with bodyweight exercises and I think 1 set taken to failure and holding it is definitely the best option.

I wonder how much the volume guys and the HIT guys are just describing the same things differently. E.g. If the volume guys do 10 'working sets' per week but only go to failure once or twice, wouldn't the HIT guys call this 1 or 2 working sets with 8 or 9 warm up sets?

I am 54 years old 5 foot 8 inches 196 pounds. In 6 weeks I added 16 pounds with a custom workout and balanced diet naturally. As a matter of fact, I have half the testosterone as someone my age. Motorcycle accident, No, I am not on TRT. This same method also worked for me when I was 19 when nothing worked before. I went from 135 pounds to 185 pounds in 6 months. There are many forms of HIT. So far, I don’t follow jones or mentzer. I tried theirs back then and came up with my own routine. Mine has 7 weeks of target training 4-6 different exercises for one body part along with full body during those 7 weeks and 3 weeks of total body training first 2 weeks and the last week for a total of 10 weeks with a week off between 10 week cycles. I don’t believe that testosterone plays the major role in building muscle. My opinion is your own natural growth hormone is more responsible. My wife also does this type of training with me. She also makes gains.

I'm very new to strength training. I'm also 45 years old. I love what I'm hearing, but I'm discovering that my left shoulder is pretty much crap. Is high intensity training possible with lousy joints?

He said he had arm muscle tears, but didn't mention his hip injury in the 80's which I think is a factor in the arm muscle injuries. Can't believe he kept up the high intensity during shredding. Seems so counter productive. Then how do you go from shredding to bulking if you are unable to change your training style, it would be so difficult to to put fat on

@@iarladonlon2826 going from shredding to bulking is food you mean. Your metabolism adapts and you have to do something to recover. I found not increasing food and decreasing training load but increasing how hard you train, you can start to build muscle and the less load enables you to recover, as metabolism returns to normal, then increase food

I am returning to weight training on a 4 day split since the flu began , and I don't think I will be able to begin the 6th day due to soreness. I'm definitely taking time off until that's gone. The pump and progress from my first week is unbelievable. Old pic from during the flu about year off there. Atrophy settled for sure. I need a hands-free camera setup for an updated profile picture.
