Doritos were created by Arch West, an executive at Frito-Lay (a division of PepsiCo), inspired by the totopos he encountered during a trip to Mexico in 1964. Upon returning to the United States, West set out to develop a similar version of the Mexican fried tortillas for the American market. After experimentation and refinement, Frito-Lay launched Doritos later that same year, initially with a simple salted flavor that later expanded to a variety of flavors to appeal to different consumer tastes. The name "Doritos" is derived from the Spanish word "doradito," referring to the golden and crunchy color of the fried tortillas that form the base of the snack.
