This is great general information. Do you have one with closeups so we understand the difference in what you are removing? Thanks.

A little closer in visuals would help give us visual learners an easier idea of what you are talking about.

My grandpa Joseph C. Bryan had the first rabbiteye blueberries in Tift County out Zion Hope Road in the late 1940s- early 1950s. His daughter, my mother, Irene B. King, worked for the blueberry scientists at the Georgia Coastal Palin Experiment Station in Tifton next to ABAC. Dr. Brightwell (Brightblue variety), Mr. Southwell (Southblue variety), Tiftblue (Tift County) and other varieties were developed while she worked there in the 1955 -1968.

Good information, but closeups of the pruning would be nice.

What is the best way to handle bushes that are too tall? We bought a property with old bushes that were 10 to 12 ft tall and began pruning out a portion of the old wood, but we are ending up with new shoots that are 10 ft tall. I'm guessing this is due to the amount of old wood remaining and the drive to reach the sun. Should we just do a massive prune of all canes to the ground, so the new shoots don't grow so tall?

I would suggest topping the bushes to 3 to 4 ft in height. Lower is also possible. Remove old canes to the crown. The return growth will be lengthy, plants that are well established contain ample energy in the roots. I usually see 3 to 4 ft of growth with hedging cuts on healthy plants.

I took some cuttings from Rabbiteyes and they successfully took but after a year in a pot I have one central 'trunk' as it were with quite a few canes branching up from the one central point. There are no other canes coming up from the crown. Should I remove all but three or so of the current canes and cut those back by half? Will this force the bush to push new canes from the roots under the soil and thus widen the crown? The plants are still in felt pots approx 12" round by 12" deep. I’m going to put them in 21 Gal pots this winter. The new pots are 22 in dia by 17 in deep

I live in Tifton and unknowingly bought the southern high bush varieties instead of rabbiteye varieties. Are the southern high bush more difficult to grow than rabbiteye ? I’ve read they are more difficult

I know this is an older post; however, can you please let me know how to prune to reduce the height of the bushes? Can I top them? They are getting quite tall.

Hi - these videos are posted by the Communications team here, so we aren't able to give you that type of advice. Please contact your local Extension office and they will be more than happy to help you with that.

I live in metro area of Georgia. When is the latest I can prune the bushes? Mine are about 6 years old and quite tall, and need to be thinned out. I have 1 Rabbiteye and 1 Tiftblue plant. Thanks!

Pruning may take place anytime. However, the best time is late winter early spring (before bud break or leaf and flower emergence) for thinning cuts where old wood is removed or large cuts are made to reduce the size of the bush. Hedging or heading occurs after harvest. These cuts are to encourage branching and control height. Pruning will decrease crop load but rabbiteye blueberry generally has copious fruiting buds so you will not be without fruit.
