Brilliant strategies to avoid tedium whilst practising. Incidently, I marvel how you compartmentalise teaching videos, answering our comments brilliantly, and your own performance schedule. Speaking for myself, I just love to see your new videos ( and I regularly re- watch your past videos, because there‘s always something to re- familiarise myself with! Finally, I hope that can find the time to continue with this outstanding work, because hundreds of subscribers must have benefitted greatly from your supreme musicianship. ( making technical problems go away, and bringing out our efforts at interpretation, touch etc.etc. Richard. ❤️

I'm guilty of the phone distraction at times, but I have done the mental part at work without considering it as practice only because I am either thinking of what I'm going to practice when I get home or what I practiced the evening before. Thank you for that bit of advice. I think I will focus on that a little more now

Big thank you for all these videos, they are a great help! I study to become a conductor and piano is one of our main focus points, but our piano teachers do not seem to care too much as we are not real pianists, and they do not instruct us properly on how to fight certain difficulties. Your tips open a new world of possibilities for improvement for me and I am very happy that I found your channel!

Thank you! I’m glad you talked about mental practice and practicing slowly. They are both things I know work after my year of studying guitar but that took me a long time to adopt in my earlier years. I wish I had from the start because I know now that I would have progressed much faster.

Hi Danae, I know what the questions are about. I'm in the same situation. Most U.S. independent piano teachers start teaching by saying to the students "play this chord, or play this scale. This is what this note is and this is how to play this song or that song and the lesson is over. The student goes home and tries to play the chords and scales and then attempts to play the song. The teachers only give you enough time and info to get you to come back. It's about the money. $60 an hour and they mostly want you to pay by the month. Imagine 50 students a week. My point is they never speak of technique. Learn a proper technique and be able to play everything well or learn a song and play it a 1000 times and you know how to play it and that's all. I say most teachers 85-90%.

Yes that is absolutely true and I really wish a strong basic technique was taught everywhere, because it is the foundation to all piano playing. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

First of all, I'm really grateful for the very fruitful video lessons, and particularly for your realistic approach to every detail. It's been almost a year that I've been practicing piano seriously. Although I don't practice regularly, I spent a good amount of effort (3-4 hours) twice a week. Do you think even I can spare a little, is it better to practice daily? (Piano is my hobby but I want to be professional over the years). In your video, you said that 20 minutes for a day is advisable, my question is what I can practice, let's say in 30 minutes, and how I can make use of this time efficiently (warm-up itself may take up to 10 mins), would you suggest some tips in detail? Thank you in advance)

Hi, 20 minutes a day is far better than 3 hours twice a week due to how our brains work. Each day we practice solid repetitions and a get good night’s rest, we improve slightly. Try learning anything on the piano without a good night’s rest, and also, keep trying your way, cramming 2 times a week instead of daily practice. Then try daily. You can only get so much better in one day, and that tiny percent you can improve each day is wasted when you skip days. It’s also very empowering to improve what will feel like effortlessly because instead of cramming you’re working in accordance with your physiology.

@@camspianosink Thank you very much for your response:) Now, I get the idea of why should practice daily. I appreciate it. I'll work on my new daily routine.
3 жыл бұрын
I would also totally agree with the fact that a shorter amount of daily practice is more effective than less regular, but longer practice sessions. The repetition of every little improvement is what will make you feel more confident and secure in your playing. I would suggest to do a short warm up of maybe 10 minutes and then dive straight into the pieces you are practicing. If you have very little time, just play through something slowly, if you have a little more time, then squeeze in some exercises for the difficult passages. Then, every couple of days, play through the piece at your current speed and level to see where it is and how much you have improved. :) Hope this helps!

@@islombekrakhmatov6055 in my experience its better to practice every other day than daily. Or at least switch up the material. This is highly individual of course.

Great info, thank you! I have a question: what do you do when you can play a complete piece slowly and your fingerings or motions do not work at higher tempos, hitting a speed wall?
3 жыл бұрын
I use the method of increasing the tempo very gradually. Just going down one metronome line every couple of days, barely noticeable in order for your fingers to slowly get adjusted to the new speed. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

Regarding practicing regularly, what are your thoughts about twice daily practice sessions? In your experience, would a two-hour session in the morning followed by an hour later in the day be more beneficial than three solid hours once per day?
3 жыл бұрын
Yes I would definitely agree with that! The second practice session after a break is one that I usually find very effective!
