3:42 I'm not aware of DisplayPort ever having analog video, so an active adapter would be required. Is it that the adapter can be powered by the DP and not require _additional_ power?
@JonThomas92
8 ай бұрын
The adapter doesn't need any extra power, I've used one and it's just a dp cable that terminates in a small box with a VGA connector on it
@CraftComputing

Yep, I used DP->VGA adapters on quite a few systems in my server rack, as my KVM is VGA only. Works great.
@Bloodred16ro

It doesn't have analog video as far as I know, yeah. It does provide a bit of power and active DP > VGA adapters are fine with that so they may not need external power. HDMI carries some power too, I've had HDMI > VGA adapters which didn't need external power too, but it also depends what HDMI device it's plugged into.

If it is DP++ it will support a passive VGA adapter
@Bloodred16ro
8 ай бұрын
I'm not sure that's accurate, as far as I know DP++ only supports HDMI / DVI with passive adapters and those are of course still digital video signals. Old cards which could output VGA had a RAMDAC to do the conversion and get analog video signals, as far as I know there is no such thing or any equivalent on any modern card, let alone on iGPUs. @@kadancomputers

Being that AMD just launched the new Ryzen 8000 series APU's it would be cool if you could just buy the little case and build your own PC in it. The new 8000 series APU's graphics are more powerful than anything that has come out previous and are comparable to some lower end dedicated graphics cards. You could actually play modern AAA titles on one at lower settings with full framrate. Finally making something like this useful.

@joetheman74

@@CraftComputing It's the Desktop APU's I'm referring to. The 8700G looks like a monster. New AI engine. 12 GPU Cores. 8 core 16 threads 4.2GHZ with 5.1GHZ boost clocks AND overclockable. I guess they come out at the end of this month. I've always been impressed with AMD's apu products. Both mobile and desktop ever since I bought a cheap $500 laptop back in 2013 with an A10 apu that actually was capable of allowing me to play Skyrim with better than 30fps. I was so dirt poor at the time and it was like a dream come true in that moment. I am a self admitted AMD fanboy though. Been using AMD almost exclusively since the first PC I ever built. And that was a 386/40 back in the 90's.

The mini PCs with 7840U (35W) or better, 7840HS (65-70W) use the same iGPU as the 8700G. At least, currently, it might be cheaper to get a pre-built mini PC with a 7840U/HS if the iGPU is what you're after specifically. But otherwise, yeah if you want to build your own, the 8700G is the way to go now, the desktop variant 7000 series processors don't have the newer/more powerful 780M iGPU.

I would love a project that uses an FPGA like the DE-10, or whatever drives MiSTer, and open source boards with either video out or audio out, and different card connectors (ISA, PCI, etc.) so that we can do hardware emulation of rare audio and video cards for authentic experiences without owning $20,000 in retro hardware, but just a few cases with one or two FPGA's bouncing between them.

Hey Jeff! Based on the styling and size of this unit, I am wondering if this might be a candidate for a little 3.5 inch IPS panel. They are very inexpensive and are generally used to display system statistics. I think it would look really cool on this provided the size is right directly over the area that looks like a built-in screen. If you google "3.5 ips screen" you will see many options. Just a thought.

@@CraftComputing I'm not sure if your performance metric is number of views (hits), or minutes viewed (retention), but if it is the latter, I wonder if the viewing melt could be related to the way you portrayed the retro gaming. You only show screen captures of gameplay with a voiceover, rather than showing yourself actually playing and reviewing the performance of the hardware and software. As a result, your usual on screen enthusiasm is not conveyed, and that may have lost folks along the way.
